Courtney Roby KO Return
I thought Roby did a nice job on the return and the return team set it up nicely. St Louis cooperated well also, they seemed to do a poor job so it all came together. It made me think of a post/comments a few weeks ago that claimed Roby was slow. Well I never thought he was slow, I really like him as a returner. He's been very reliable and to me has looked very capable of breaking the long one so it was nice to see it happen. So, I have 2 questions, unrelated. 1) Didn't that kickoff return affirm that he has good speed and is a good returner for us?
2) Can anyone comment on his return about 4-5 games ago that was probably his longest of the season before the retuern vs Rams. It was at home and there was a penalty at the end of the play. I was in a bar and I think it was because someone threw a beer bottle or something on the field. Is that what reeally happened because there was no commentary where I was watching.

Yes. There was a beer bottle thrown.

So, I'm going to Tampa and wearing a Bucs shirt
and throwing a beer bottle on a key play. ( Get my drift?) How do refs determine in a split second, spur of the moment, that some devious character is not doing just that?? Sabotaging the home team??

The penalty on Roby was for spiking the ball after he was caught from behind...
The “beer bottle penalty” was not actually because of a beer bottle. It was on Shockey because he joined in with Pierre Thomas as Thomas was celebrating his Touchdown. Since the “Bob and Weave” days, the NFL outlawed celebrations of more than one person….

I said he was slow
Because he is, compared to some of our better returners in previous years.
He had a good burst and decision on this return and was too far down the field before anyone could chase him down. The long one before, he got chased down like he was walking though. I’m not saying he’s too slow to be a return man, I’m just saying a faster returner would be better. I thought Meachum was doing a great job and there was no need to bring Roby in at all.
Some of our best returners have been pretty speedy though, Tyrone Hughes, the Beerman, but there have been some that weren’t expecially fast and were very good. Mel Gray was never super fast, but he was quick and smart and arguably the best return man ever.
In the end, I have no problems with Roby, but up until that return, he’d been kind of “so what”. I still think we’d do better with someone faster back there.

When you talk about speed
sometimes it can be deceiving. What I mean is that there is speed like when you get timed in the 40 or the 100, and then there’s speed in a game situation. I think Roby is very fast. And, while it is true he got caught on that one run back, I watched the replay several times and I differ with you in that he didn’t get caught from behind like he was standing still. If it was that bad, 3-4 guys would have got him. The defender that got him was extremely fast but also it was about angles and Roby could have finished that KO by changing directions, most returners do that well and that can be a great equalizer. He missed that aspect of that return.
So, I expect more of this from Roby- I like his speed and his style- very decisive and very good cuts. I was always disappointed with the Beerman, I thought he was mostly hype and he was just too tiny for the NFL even though I liked him. But I just don’t think the word slow is fair to Roby. Are there faster people in the NFL? Yes. There always are- today, tomorrow, the next play, next week. There is so much speed out there that it’s crazy and hard to say who’s the fastest, but I think Roby has plenty of speed for his position.

Hey Phil
I remember that play but I think I remember that the beer bottle was mentioned but it was not the reason for the play being called back… I do not remember the reason though…sorry.
