The Saints' 2006 draft....

Take a look at this draft, amazing 3.5 years later.

Star-divide

1 2(2) Reggie Bush RB USC
2 11(43) Roman Harper S Alabama
4 11(108) Jahri Evans OG Bloomsburg
5 2(135) Rob Ninkovich DE Purdue
6 2(171) Mike Hass WR Oregon State
6 5(174) Bernard (Josh) Lay CB Pittsburgh
7 2(210) Zach Strief T Northwestern
7 44(252) Marques Colston WR Hofstra

I would love to know if any other team has this many standouts from the 2006 draft.

2008 was pretty good too

Round 1 – Sedrick Ellis
Round 2 – Tracy Porter
Round 5 – DeMario Pressley
Round 5 – Carl Nicks
Round 6 – Taylor Mehlhaff
Round 7 – Adrian Arrington

Half of that class is already hugely important, and Pressley and Arrington are coming along after rookie season injuries.

But yeah, the 2006 offseason is a study in how to rebuild a team in one year. That draft plus Payton, Brees, Faine, Thomas.

yeah boyeeeee

we need another one like that to get a nice 10 year playoff run, and ol Colston was the steal of that draft class

Don't forget . . .

. . . the Saints also traded down draft picks in trades that netted us both Jeff Faine and Hollis Thomas (they may not be on the team anymore, but they most certainly contributed during their time here)

Another note on the '06 draft:

rob ninkovich has seen a lot more playing time this season for the patriots since the got bit by the injury bug— and he’s looked pretty good.

and i agree, HB-NOLA—the 2008 draft seems good already, but i imagine in 5 years we’ll be saying it was KILLER. i think ellis, porter, pressley, nicks, and arrington could have long, successful careers as saints.

Where to from here?

So for this years draft is it a safe bet that we want to create more depth on the interior line on both sides of the ball? Or am I missing something.

offensive line for certain

The o-line is pretty thin, and there’s a decent chance they won’t be able to hold on to Jammal Brown when he becomes a free agent. The defensive line though, especially inside, is pretty good right now in terms of depth. I mean, they’re always looking for upgrades, but they currently have Ellis, Hargrove, Ayodele, and Pressley, plus Clancy on IR.

I think on defense they will primarily be looking for more talent in the LB corps (I hope), which makes it a real shame they didn’t take a LB this year in the first round with so many great ones to choose from. Brian Cushing was taken right after Malcom Jenkins, and he’s making a strong case for rookie of the year. I think they may also want some more depth in the secondary – there’s currently a pretty big drop off behind the starters at almost every position. Adding McAlister helps that, but besides him and Jenkins, the talent level just isn’t there. I like Usama Young, but I don’t think he’s a long term solution for free safety, and I think everyone is aware of Gay’s weakness. Pierson Prioleau is a good special teamer, but I don’t think I want to see him starting at strong safety if Roman goes down.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if they take an early round WR either.
