New Orleans Saints Sign Former Cornerback Mike McKenzie
Well, the rumors were swirling this morning and as it turns out, it looks like they were true. WWLTV has confirmed on their homepage that the Saints have officially signed cornerback Mike McKenzie. The 2009 Saints season continues to shock and astound.
I have no idea what this means about the current situation and health status of the Saints cornerback position but my initial assumption is that Leigh Torrence and/or Randall Gay got a little nicked up yesterday and are, at the very least, questionable for Monday night's big game against New England. I do not think this means Jabari Greer's injury is more serious than initially thought and I still expect to see him return to the field against the Patriots. Like the signing of Chris McAlister last week, I also believe this proves that the front office is not taking any chances this season and really want a championship as badly as we, the fans, do.
Regardless, McKenzie was the best cornerback on the Saints roster the last few years. Of course, the secondary sucked those years so that might not say much. Now back with the team, he's definitely moved down the depth chart a bit and it will be interesting to see how and where he fits into the Saints new and improved defensive scheme under Gregg Williams. The status of McKenzie's surgically repaired knees are still in question but we've got to assume the organization knows what they're doing and feels comfortable with the situation.
Welcome back, Mike! You got here just at the right time. Now if we could just re-sign Deuce...

I'm thinking this move is an insurance type move for Porter's injury.
If McAlister can match up against Moss and be physical and Greer can cover Welker it may bode well this coming Monday night. I can see Gay being out at least a couple of weeks with the hamstring and Torrence was it really a stinger or possibly more…. Gives the Saints MM and MJ for some depth should they have another injury at the position. Which frees up Usama to back up Sharper should something else happen there.

If Greer is healthy, he's the man for Moss
He’s the fastest man on the defense, and used to defend Moss (well) twice a year in Buffalo.

Saints beat Green Bay for Insurance corners.
The Saints got a jump on Green Bay who all so lost corners this week. I bet Green Bay was thinking about bring back Mike McKenzie and the Saints beat them to the punch.

Payton and Loomis
know exactly what they are doing by picking up McAllister and McKenzie before this Pats game. It gives us even more depth with Porter being out until playoffs. And it also keeps us keeps us from starting Gay or Torrence against Moss and Welker. Jenkins I think can hold his own with saftey help. But having 2 vets at CB especially McAlister that has played the Pats so many times and has a feel for the Pats WRs gives us an advantage. Hopefully we’ll get Ellis back and Greer is healthy enough to play well since they basically had a bye week.

Gregg Williams’ overall scheme isn’t really all that unique…it just includes a little of everything. It requires every player to understand that his duties change depending upon the formation and play call. That’s hard for a player to pick up if he’s young and inexperienced, or if his talented is limited (such as Jason David in the case of man coverage). McKenzie is neither of those. I expect he’d be able to play immediately, up to the level of his actual remaining physical ability. The mental aspect of it won’t slow him down.

no doubt
MM can’t catch worth a dam but man can he cover.Teams wouldn;t evn throw his way for 3years he’ll be a great influence to our young corners and he dserves to be on this team for all the great things he did for us with a bad team plus him and Sharper are old teammates and really good freinds I expect Sharper to play even better now I secretly suspect Sea Payton used MM to ge Shrper here and then they let him go 2 days later
witch is messed up.

Dave you spoke about it yesterday after the game.
Porter at the earliest would be probably be the next to or last game of the regular season. And I agree with you, I wouldn’t feel good going into the playoffs resting a bunch of starters, I too believe it affects the chemistry. And Porter’s late return could be cause of some concern in that regard and why this pick-up is a good thing. So who will be waived or go on IR now? That is the million $ question.

Have always like Mike, but something must be more serious with Greer and/or Porter…….

I put “better than McAllister”. Not so much because I think McAllister was a horrible pick up — he wasn’t. But I got to see him get picked on quite a bit his last few years in Baltimore and he was pretty bad. But he was also trying to play hurt and that’s a recipe for disaster every single time. So I was kind of “we’ll see” with him.
McKenzie is also coming back from injury. But he’s already done it before with us, and when he came back from the first injury he was really playing better than ever. Now he’s had an even longer break to recover and recuperate, and if he’s been working out I expect him to come out just as good as he ever was. At least at a raw skill level.
Now whether he can get the scheme fully down quickly enough, well, that remains to be seen. Which is why I couldn’t vote for “absolutely”. But I fully expect him to come back healthy and strong and almost-as or just-as quick as he was before. And considering no corner wins every single time, if he still has the mental toughness to play corner than I expect him to do at least an adequate job.

I think Torrence got a dislocated shoulder or partially dislocated
it looked like they weere tryin g to “pop it in” after the first time he got injured. They might be trying to figure if MM or McAlister are still good enough to be upgrades over Gay. Then there is Young and Reis- because Jenkins or Mc Alister could probably play safety. Could release Yound or Reis.
I hope there is a way to sign Deuce- at least for 1 game for 1 carry so he can officially be a part of this team.

you can justify releasing Young and/or Reis for McKenzie or McAlister…..

They won't.
Both are far too valuable on special teams, not to mention that Young is a fairly reliable backup for Sharper.

If the rumors were correct??? Porter's injury was said to be grade 3...
Meaning to me that the 4-8 prognosis would put it more towards the 8 week end. Could we be seeing another Jamal Brown type of decision and Porter goes to IR?

4 months ago, If you'd have told me the Saints would re-sign MM, I'd have been all for it.
But the fact is that MM was not resigned, Deuce was not resigned, and those were the two players that the fan base was clamoring to have resigned. The result? A 10-0 team. Payton and Loomis know exactly what the @#$% they are doing.
I just hope he is healthy enough to contribute positive plays. I’m just not certain that will happen…

Some of You Saints Fans Need to Calm Down
The Saints Mgmt has been keeping tabs on McKenzie’s health all season. The way that Porter and Greer were playing they never needed him.
This has less to do with the injuries to Gay and Torrence, but more about the way Gay has played as the starter. He looked horrible and totally lost. The Saints coaches got used to the idea of having corners who can actually COVER their man with Greer & Porter. Randall Gay simply wasn’t covering anybody that well. The guy is much better as a nickel back.
The Saints actually made their initial overtures to Mckenzie after the Rams game to see what kind of shape he was in. When Gay and Torrence went down it made the decision to pull the trigger that much easier. But they were already looking in that direction anyway.
Mac & Mac (McAllister & McKenzie) give the Saints two quality veterans to help hold down the fort until they can get past some of these injuries. Also, they don’t have to bring anyone back too quick and risk a more serious season ending injury.
Relax guys…..these are to good pickups.

Agreed
I voted “Wait and See.” I totally agree with this from Saintsational:
I also believe this proves that the front office is not taking any chances this season and really want a championship as badly as we, the fans, do.
Saints management and coaches obviously believe this is the year to throw everything and the kitchen sink towards winning a championship. The table is set and they are just accumulating some extra herbs and spices for the final entree in case they need them.

McKenzie
I like this move, Mike was a good corner since he came here in 04. He was playing really well last season until he broke his knee cap. Like McAlister, he’s tall and can cover pretty decently.
I want to call out Leigh Torrence now. Not in a bad way, but i wanted to say that took some guts coming back onto the field to play after separating his shoulder. He sacrificed his body again when he tackled that reciever with his shoulder. He earned my respect yesterday.. Get well soon secondary!

Any word on DeMario Pressley wasn't he injured? With Big Sed coming back
could be another possibly for an opening roster spot. Just speculation on my part but I don’t see anything troubling with the acquistion of either MM or CM. As we have all witnessed this season depth is key. And I trust GW and can see this as something he is requesting from Pay-Lou.
by NOSFan4Life on Nov 23, 2009 2:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I don't see this move as having a downside
They saw Torrence and gay get a little nicked up, and they don’t want to find themselves trying to cover Percy harvin short-handed.
At this point, there aren’t many options. Bringing back a guy who although injured before knows the team and even with a new D coord can come in more quickly than most is a good move.
This is insurance; maybe we don’t need him but I’m glad to have him if we get to that point.
I'm proud of my damn strong football team. Have a great day!

My take...
Lets see who is getting cut or sent to IR…
1) Porter injury is more serious that initially thought and he ends up on the IR. Awful, and strange… why wasting all this time.. Not to say this could give ammunition to those who think that Payton is playing with the injury reports. I dont think this move has anything to do with Greer, who may be back next monday
2) They get rid of one of either Gay or Torrence. Both got bruised on Sunday but none of the injuries looked to be season threatening. Or maybe they value experience more than versatility with a view to the offseason. Or maybe they got just fed up with one or either of them (Torrence sucked on that Tampa TD, Gay got burned badly by the Rams)
3) They damp MCAL already. Strange but possible
4) None of the cornerback goes and they free a roster spot somewhere else… Strange to keep 7 corners (and 5 safeties) when we have just three healty receivers (+Roby) and we have gone into last game with just two QB’s e no emergency skipper. But we still have two kickers…
5) They could send someone else to the taxi squad and dump Mark Parson. No idea who though
I guess we will know soon…

He plays for ESPN.
Besides…why is everyone so hot on signing all the free agents out there? If we’re going to win the Super Bowl this year, let’s do it with the people who have done all the work so far. Derrick Brooks didn’t help us get to 10-0. Who would you cut to make room for him?

It's a good move
With Torrence and Gay hurt, and also not looking too good, this will give us some depth at the position. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Greer with McKenzie, McCallister, or Jenkins at the other starting spot. They are all good. I’d be more comfortable with MM or MJ. MM because we’ve seen him in action and know he could still cover untill he got hurt last year and then MJ because he seems to be developing really well and knows the playbook the best probably. I expect McCallister to be the #4 guy and for us to possibly release Gay

Alittle hating going on....
I really think McKenzie could be an asset down the stretch. He’s a smart guy who held his own while he was here in Nola.
Greer and Porter should be back soon. Jenkins is healthy. Sharper and Harper are ready to go. Nothing to worry about.
It’s going to be interesting to see McAllister and McKenzie play if they get the chance. I’m sure Williams will put them to use. And with Sharper getting the guys lined up correctly we may get results from these guys sooner than later.
I still think people are hating on McAlister, he hasnt even played a down yet! McKenzie a.k.a. the predator will be ready! back in the NOLA #34!!

Here's something I haven't seen considered yet
…how is this going to impact the Saints’ special teams? Torrance played mostly on ST, which haven’t been all that great. Someone will have to replace him on kicks, and somehow I don’t think it will be McKenzie. Is our coverage going to fall another notch lower?

He has great football knowledge
He is a good veteran if used correctly. He could be a good nickle, or great for zone coverage schemes, but I would worry about him in man coverage with a #1 or #2 WR. I think Ty Law showed that you can’t spend that much time out of football and be expected to go man to man without help. Jabari Greer can do that. Tracy Porter can do that when he gets back from injury, but I don’t know that McKenzie or McAlister will be able to do that right away. McKenzie knows how to read a route and always seemed like an adequate tackler, so I think there is a way to use him.
Jenkins showed some promise this week against the Bucs, but then again, it is the Bucs, so I would like to think this move is just to add a little depth and maybe rotate in some fresh bodies to keep pace with the guys running down the field.

speaking of special teams
I couldn’t help but wonder why they didn’t try Malcolm Jenkins on punt returns against the Bucs, rather than Sharper and Henderson. Both of those guys are starters (read: less expendable due to injury) and Jenkins excelled in that capacity at Ohio State. Maybe with all of this incoming experience at corner, he’ll start to be used more in the return game. To be honest, Bush and Moore haven’t done squat back there this season either, so maybe Jenkins can find his niche and provide a spark.
