The Game Against the Patriots Began Yesterday

"Gamesmanship" is the term most used to describe how NFL coaches try to withhold information and deceive opposing coaching staffs in the run-up before any big game. Bill Belichik is one of the most notorious at this. He tends to treat the press like mushrooms--feed them sh*t and keep them in the dark. Our own fearless leader is a well-known follower of this philosophy as well. Sean Payton would rather release his bank account numbers than allow player participation information out before the league forces him to. I think we can expect Payton to try and beat Belichik at his own game during the next seven days.

We know this is a huge game for our team. It's like an in-season playoff game in some regards because the Patriots are arguably the team of the decade and the Saints now aspire to be the team of the next decade. Players, coaches, management, waterboys will all be pumped for this one.

Star-divide

I remember hearing in January 2007 that Payton already had the NFC Championship game plan for the Bears drawn up and neatly prepared for the team as they exited the field after their inspired victory over the Eagles in the divisional round (too bad it didn't work). I wouldn't be surprised if he was handing out Patriots game plan binders as the team was boarding the flight home yesterday. You know he wants this win. Gregg Williams had to face this team twice a season when he was head coach of the Bills and you know he also really wants this win. And we surely know that next Monday night can't get here fast enough for no. 9. Breesus will be balls-out pumped for matching up against Tom Brady.

If you're the Patriots defense, how do you game plan for the Saints? Think about the last few games we've played and how many different players have been featured and scoring in those weeks. Yesterday, it was Mike Bell, David Thomas, and Robert Meachem. If you didn't know any better, you might think David Thomas had moved ahead of Shockey on the depth chart. Against the Rams, it was Reggie Bush and Meachem while Colston was having a down day. Against the Falcons and Panthers, PT Cruiser was the man and looking unstoppable. Was this just a matter of the individual games and opponents dictating Payton's personnel strategy or a conscious effort to provide many different and confusing team looks when Belichik and future coordinators look at Saints game film? The answer is most likely the former with a little bit of the latter mixed in. The Patriots' D knows we're loaded with weapons and will focus on stuffing the run game and then disrupting our most valuable weapon--Drew Brees.

To slow down Brady and the Patriots' potent offense, might we see Gregg Williams employ another predominate 3-4 look like he did against the Bills earlier this season? It certainly worked then against an admittingly lesser offensive attack and it could also present a look the Patriots might not be expecting.

With the recent signings of Chris McAlister and Mike McKenzie (Welcome home, Mike!) and Ellis and Greer seemingly set to return this week, how does the Patriots offense game plan for our defense? No one but maybe Payton and Williams seems to know exactly who will be playing on that side of the ball next Monday. Could today's signing of McKenzie be more gamesmanship to keep the Patriots guessing? I expect Payton will employ a heavier than normal "Belichik" strategy this week with the injury reports to try and keep them guessing right up until gametime.

Yes indeedy, the Saints/Patriots game has already begun. Next Monday night will merely be the exciting climax.

How do you game plan for the Saints?

You control the line of scrimmage, both sides. Everything else falls into place. That has always been the Parcells/Belichick modus operandi, and I don’t expect any change. Look for the Patriots to play smashmouth against us…and look for Payton to do the same thing. It’s part and parcel with his new emphasis on the running game and being physical.

May the best team win…even in black pants.

black pants

man those black pants are a killer. they’re such bad luck. for the first 5 games of the season we wore gold pants w the black stipe, and then for four games we wore the black leotards and they were all close games. STAY WITH THE GOLD PANTS!!

I hate the black pants!!!

I said it before and I’ll say it again. The black on black won’t make us play any better or worse. I’m not supersticious. They’re just friggin’ UGLY. And they’re so Jerry Glanville.

Try to look at those pants differently

Maybe if we think of them as Danskins…..

Those Saints will just Dance, and leap and bound down the field and….

Touchdown… touchdown… touchdown….

or…

We could pretend they are scary?

snicker

Ahhh 10-0 It feels soooooooooooooo good.

But that's the problem

They DO look like Danskins. Whenever they wear those pants they look like they just came from Southern Decadence.

Please, PayLoo…I’ll always support you guys, but PLEASE stop wearing those hideous leotards. Or at least put a stripe on them so they look like uniform pants, and not like black satin metrosexual knickers.

I too prefer the gold

I don’t consider myself to be superstitious, but they sure seemed to play better in the gold pants. Of course, that was earlier in the season when they were still kinda under the radar. Those pants just flat out look better to me.

I just prefer the look of the gold pants. I guess this means we’re having a good year, since all we can really debate is the preferred pants color. :-)

But this was a big discussion last year, too, in the year of mediocrity...

And remember where we were during last year’s Thanksgiving week? High off a 51-29 Packer win on MNF, 6-5, and hoping for a winning streak to boost us to the playoffs.

Here we are this year, looking to clinch the division and move to 11-0. What a difference a year makes!!

What a great View

Thank you so much for this article. For those of of us, or perhaps I will just say for me,

I am just a fan – not a football scholar.

Articles like this enrich the game for me. They aren’t full of numbers and stats that just don’t sink it. It is intelligent, insightful, well thought out, seamlessly presented and illuminates the game for me in a way 1000 numbers can’t.

Thank you.

Thanks for the warm response.

I was sitting in the office this afternoon thinking about all of this and decided to try and articulate it. This is gonna be a helluva week capped off with a great game. Look for as little information as possible from Payton on who will be healthy for this one. He’s a prideful guy and this is his first time facing Belichik as a head coach. He’ll be anxious to match wits with him and I’ll bet this is THE game he has most looked forward to this season. We all remember how well he did when he got to face another great coach he admired in Bill Parcels, right? That night it was Mike Karney who was the secret weapon. Will Kyle Eckel be that guy next Monday night?

In case you haven’t heard yet, they’re interviewing Drew tonight at halftime on ESPN.

Satchmo26 ~ U DUN GUD!

A really great post gets people saying, “I was thinking along those same lines. Just didn’t know how to put it into words.” Well, you did put it into words perfectly. Great job and you are absolutely right, the game has already begun.

I also look for Payton and Williams to pull a bunch of stuff out of their butts and make this much like the Saints/Cowboys game when Sean taught everybody in the NFL how much fun coaching can be! I think Belichik’s weakness is he’s been in the spotlight too long and doesn’t alter his style very much. I can’t want for the Pay/Will team to start messing with his head!!!!

I really have a good feeling about Monday night. 11 and 0h yea!

Injury Report

Hello Saints Fans " ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL "

The Injury Report is governed by the NFL if Tom has an injury that impedes his play It’s on the list and that’s why he’s listed so don’t blame the Pats

Ask Mangini about it

Nice writeup!

Yes, I’m lurking. ;-) At any rate, injury reporting for the Pats is hilarious, to say the least. During cross blogging exchanges I consistently get asked about this “injured” player or that. Invariably, I have to wait until Friday to even get a clue. And even then, we get, “It’s a gameday decision.” Aarrgghh!!

Here’s to a good week of cross blogging!

You know, I think GW will have a good scheme, but I wouldn’t exactly think that a 3-4 will automatically be a good idea. It’s not like the Pats don’t know how to play against a 3-4, after all, because they played it as their base defense for much of the last decade, and still heavily use it even though they’re fair bit more 4-3 oriented this year.

When that old poll came out I picked NE as our first loss. Never have I hoped more to turn out to be wrong. :) Well maybe not never… but certainly very close.

I just hope our guys are all healthy. If they are, we’ve got a decent chance. If not…

questions for u saints fans

a) how’s Will Smith doing this year?
b) how’s Malcolm Jenkins doing this year?
thanks

by mathew.40 on Nov 23, 2009 9:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

They

Are both doing well
Will Smith has returned to form last year he was slowed by injuries this year he is healthy and raisng hell in opponents backfields
Malcolm Jenkins has been brought along slow we have 2 great cb’s but starter Tracy Porter was hurt last week so we seen more of him this week and he got his first nfl pick
I think Jenkins is going to get alot more playing time and most the fans on this board like that we have been wanting to see more of him

Now a question for yoy

We all know Moss and Welker who are your 3rd and 4th recievers i know you got rid of galloway but dont hear much about the others

by simone219 on Nov 24, 2009 5:22 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I know they have a pretty impressive rookie named Julian Edelman(?) He’s kinda small and quick. He reminds me of Chicago’s Johnnie Knox, or our own Lance Moore. I don’t know who else they got. Doesn’t matter all that much, with Moss and Welker. That’s enough to cover right there.

"I don’t know if there’s a good time to play the New Orleans Saints this year to be quite honest with you."-Steve Spagnuolo

by FuSoYa on Nov 24, 2009 7:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good question

It’s a “cast of thousands” these days. Sam Aiken is the vet and “can” be a go to guy depending on the opponent/game/etc… Julian Edelman is being called “Welker Jr.” Size-wise, they’re very similar and they appear to have similar traits: jack rabbit quickness vs. downhill speed (those little legs can only run so fast! ;-)).

We’ve struggled to find that third guy that could really stretch the field, another deep threat for teams to worry about besides Moss. Joey Galloway was supposed to be that guy, but simply didn’t produce. I saw it personally at training camp and in pre-season games. Galloway wasn’t a question of needing to work through some communication issues (ie: Welker/Moss going one way when Brady thought they should go another); that stuff is fixed with practice. Galloway was simply dropping balls and making mistakes a veteran receiver shouldn’t. It’s too bad; I really liked the guy and had high hopes.

I do wish...

Heath Evans would be a go for next game. How nice would it have been to see him open holes against a team which QB humiliated him on national TV against the Colts, 2 or 3 years ago, before AND after the play!

Still cautiously optimistic.

by FrenchFreak on Nov 23, 2009 9:49 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Sorry...

Pats line up. Evans may be out of place on the setup but Brady screams at him to get to the other side. Magnificient Tom dont even go his way on the play but goes after Evans again after the play.

Maybe Evans screwed up, maybe Tom did.No reason to loose it as Brady did. And Heath would have rub it in.

Still cautiously optimistic.

by FrenchFreak on Nov 23, 2009 9:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

well.

i loved Evans when he played for the Pats. Brady is a perfectionist…i dont think he meant to demean him.
a similar thing happened this year against the falcons, when Joey Galloway dropped a key pass on 3rd down (in the redzone) and another redzone TD (later had to settle for a FG). Brady was livid. Galloway is a 15 year vet and he should have caught the balls that were coming to him. As a buckeye fan, i was pissed @ Galloway ( a buckeye) too.

its the emotion of the game but its the receiver’s fault if he doesn’t line up properly. bc then the qb has to spent another 5-10 seconds and sometimes it forces you to burn a timeout.
like against the colts, they had to burn a timeout on the 1st play of a series (the 4th n 2 series) because the wrong WR formation came out.

i believe in 2006 or 2007, the same thing happened to P. Manning and Marvin Harrison. he audibles out a route for Harrison…Harrison went the wrong route and the ball got picked off and Manning was yelling @ Harrison.

by mathew.40 on Nov 23, 2009 10:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Brady doesn't care about anybody...

but himself. He’s the kind of man that thinks HE wins SuperBowls. No wonder Manning will get his 4th MVP cause it’s the only reward that emphasis all around individual skills and leadershp. Cassels had 11 wins with the Pats. How many games would the Colts have won without Payton in the last 5 years? Case close…..

Galloway? There’s a perfect example of Tom being spoiled with Moss and Walker and not wanting to put some time into it to make it work with Joey. Hey, I won’t complain, the man use to kick our ass every time but Tom still got him fired…

But mostly you need to know about the text message Manning sent to Brown on the Sunday of draft weekend, before they’d ever met. The message read: “Meet me at the facility at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Warmed up. Ready to go.”

-Sports Illustrated, November 16th, 2009.

Warmed up and ready to go….In April? With a rookie? Let’s see when was the last time Brady felt the need to do the same with a youngster.

Remember, you brought them in the same post….

Still cautiously optimistic.

well...

I think Brett Favre pretty much has the MVP locked up. Besides Harvin, the Vikings have the same team from last year and look how much better they are. Not too much of a Favre fan but….. I don’t think Manning will have a chance this year.

by J Rock on Nov 23, 2009 11:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah but.....

Manning is doing it by himself. He has Wayne I’ll give you that but he’s working with 2 young receivers and NO RUNNING GAME! Favre has arguably the best running back in the league (I think Chris Johnson is the best running back in the league but it’s arguable), the possible rookie of the year, and one of the best offensive lines. Not to mention Rice is turning into one of the top receivers in the league, granted that could be because of Favre.

.

Manning’s o-line is pretty good too. Not to mention Addai isn’t too bad of a back. I think Favre is making his receivers good, even the TE’s are playin their asses off. I just think Favre should get it because of how smart he’s playin. He’s known for all his int’s but only throwing 3 all year is impressive. God only knows how many 3 int games he’s had in his career but he’s only thrown 3 for the full season so far. Also, you haven’t been seeing too much of AP like last year, he’s not the only offensive weapon anymore…

I'm not saying

y’all are wrong but comparing Tavaris Jackson to Brett Favre isn’t right! And it’s not like the Vikings had a bad team last year. They were in the playoffs. Everyone knew if they got a competant QB they would be dangerous. Take Manning off of the Colts and they don’t go to the playoffs. Favre is having a great year, maybe his best, but I don’t think it’s just a given at this point.

Manning over for Favre for MVP

I agree that Manning is a bigger asset to his team than Favre is to his. That said, if we lose Brees we too would be one and done in the playoffs. Brunell would be OK, but I don’t see him getting us to the promised land the way no. 9 would. So, for MVP the top two in my mind would have to be Manning and Brees. Brady would be my third choice.

Tavaris Jackson just took over the last couple games after Gus got hurt. Leaving Jackson in for the playoffs was a huge mistake. He looked like a deer in the headlights.

what was the vikings record last year?

They’ve only lost one game; the colts are a fraud in my opinion, they’re solid for sure but they are barely winning games, they’re passing their way out of it last minute and I’m not that impressed . Sure, I guess that’s Manning but I think Favre is MVP no question. He’s made this team way better. I think the Vikings were what 10-6 last year. That’s a conference luxury. Meaning their conference was weak (i.e. Detroit, Green Bay and yes even Chicago).

tom got him fired?

Galloway is a 15 year vet. He didn’t do shit in the first game, dropped a key 3rd down pass in the redzone against the jets. did the same shit against the falcons and cost us a TD. i’m sorry, but as much as i really wanted him to be a good 3rd receiver, he was shit.
hell, a 7th round this yr (-who was a qb in college and only had 1 catch in his college career) had more catches than Galloway did. it is un-excusable for a 15 yr vet to have less catches than a qb turned wr.

Randy Moss was traded to New England during draft day 2007. Wes Welker was traded to New England in April 2007. They both connected well w. Tom Brady. Moss set a record w. 23 TD in a season and Wes had a 112 catch season. Stallworth had a good season too i might add.
Julian Elderman, the 7th rounder this year, in his second game (against the Jets) had 9 catches for around 110 yards.
Brady doesn’t get WR fired. If you can catch, you don’t deserve to be w. the team.
He isn’t selfish prick like you think he is. He lowered his salary in order to bring Moss to the Patriots.
About the MVP race, i much as i dislike Favre, He deserves it. for a guy who leads the NFL record of INT’s, he has 3 this year.

Miss him also, he was destined for a big game

versus his former team, it always happens that way. Great blocker, and receiver, better than Karney . Karney would get side-stepped a lot, Evans always got a piece of someone to at least slow them down or change direction of the would be tackler.

This guy looks like he is going to be a very very good corner and probably has the versatility to play FS also. It’s kind of early to tell, but we have seen very little if anything negative and lots of upside.

Can you say overrated?

New England is living off past glory. They are 7-3. Their secondary is so vulnerable, their coach doesn’t even trust them. On offense, their running game is spotty at best and their offensive line has trouble picking up blitzes. They depend on Brady’s quick release alot. Early in the season teams were hitting Brady early and often and he was looking very average. Too many teams are afraid of New England’s reputation and are no going after them. The press gives us hardly any chance. I was looking at the talking heads yesterday on television and they were all saying the same thing. The only chance the Saints have is the dome. That the dome is hard a place to win that the Pats are not used to such a hostle environment. Don’t get me wrong the Pats are a good team and they are well coached, but this is not the Pats of the past.

My, how expectations have risen...

Can you really imagine thinking that any 7-3 team is living off past glory? New England is still a very good NFL team, and to say that they are living off the past is ridiculous. There are 24 other teams in the league who would happily trade their record with New England. That said, I think the Saints are the better team this year and will win, but New England is still a formidable opponent.

speaking of mind games

Did you see the AP report that the combined record of our opponents is 37-63? What a great mind-F to put on a team right before a big game, Makes one wonder if Belicek put that in their ear. Such a mind game. The Pats, by the way, are combined 47-53.

So, let’s see, divide by 10 games so far, that’s 4.7/5.3, for the Pats, subtract 3 losses and 7 wins, that would be….-2.3/2.3. That can’t be right!?!?! And, the Saints would be -7.3/6.3, omigod!!!!

I think the Saints

are going to prepare for this game just like they did they Giants game. Remember when everyone was hyping that game up because we were going against the then #1 defense in the league. This game is going to be more hype but I think the Saints are going to take the same approach and just prepare as much as they can. Even though the Saints players have been preparing for one game at a time SP and GW have been game plannining for this game in secret for the past 3 weeks. They have a game plan and I think the Pats are going to be confused as hell.

Even though I know Payton wouldn’t take it that far, I would love to see him pull the Wildcat with Reggie out of his back pocket. That would really confuse the mess out of the Pats because they know Payton doesn’t use it so they don’t game plan for that at all. I know its far fetched but I would love to see the look on the Pats D-coordinator’s face when Brees goes wide to the left or right and Bush or Moore(if healthy) is back to take the snap.

Get ready to FEEL DAT BREES!!!

I agree with the SP and GW game planning for this next one for the past three weeks. I wish I could agree that the Pats will be confused. I hope that’s the case, but I think Belichik is a smarter coach than Tom Coughlin (Even though he didn’t prove it in Super Bowl XLIII).

You're probably right.

I just hope we don’t start out slow again this week. The first five games we came out and dominated from the get go. The latter five we’ve had the slow start and adjusted well by the 3rd quarter to come back when needed. I don’t won’t to see that this week. The Patriots lately have done the opposite—they started fast and appeared to slow down and lose their edge in the second half. We’ll most likely need to have the engine purring on all supercharged cylinders for 60 minutes this game. If it turns out the Patriots aren’t able to match our intensity, well too bad for them.

This reminds me

of the Dallas game in 2006, when we played the Cowboys in their own stadium, and it was supposed to be a big test: win, and the Saints are for real. Well, we won, all right. We clobbered them. Maybe the best Saints game of all time, up to that point.

And the next week, we lost to the Redskins.

Again, this game is supposed to be some sort of ultimate test: the pundits won’t believe in us unless we knock off the Patriots. So we have to clobber them.

And next week, we play the Redskins.

History doesn’t actually repeat itself, but it sure does love a good joke.

Redskins = trap game

Regardless of what happens against the Pats (please God, let us win!), I hope they don’t go to Washington and underestimate the Skins. They’ve been quietly improving over the last couple of weeks on defense and their offense may muster up just enough to beat us. You’re absolutely right about history loving a good joke. That loss to the Skins in ’06 was a tough pill to swallow after the beat-down we put on da Boys.

to lose to an NFC team. If we are going to lose at all this season, this is the game that we can most afford to lose. The Vikings are hot on our heels and have only lost to an AFC team. If we lose to an NFC team and our records are tied at the end of the season, Vikes have the tie breaker…

I would love to murk the pats, but we cannot overlook any teams after because they are all NFC teams.

Pressure

We can list stats and compare QB’s and I think we all agree that the Saints are playing like the better team right now but this is a different game it could be a preview of this yrs Superbowl
and the fans and the media are making it the game of the year

But pressure changes everything and all the pressure is on the Saints, to stay undefeated and storm thru the NFC play-offs to the SB and that can be a huge distraction the media hype, the interviews , the expectations from a big game it’s easy for a team to try to hard, if the Saints can stay grounded it will be an exciting game
If not they could beat themselves I know this doesn’t seem likely but

Sometimes you just can't win...

Despite all the praise I’ve heard over the Saints, now I’ve continuously heard about how soft their schedule has been. But at the time, we exposed two undefeated teams from New Jersey and we were considered to have a fairly difficult starting schedule.
To top it off, I’ve heard posts that New England hasn’t beaten a team that currently has a winning record. (sidenote: the Colts have trailed their last 4 games in the 4th quarter, so they’ve been badmouthed too.)

I guess the bottom line is… there’s always an angle that’ll make your team look weak or inferior. Likewise, there’s always an angle where your team looks better than they are. I think the Pats and Saints are VERY MUCH for real and they’ll have a great game Monday night. May the best team win… and may that best team be the Saints! Who dat!

This was at the end. Tom Jones question to the readers. " Anyone else think it was kind of a jerk move by the Saints to go for it on fourth and 1 with five minutes left and a 38-7 lead? " Jerk writing this maybe! Sean Payton pulls the starters with something like fine min.‘s left rather then rub the Bucs noses in it. Keep anyone on either side of the ball from a senseless injury for nothing and this guy prints this. I say classy and smart thing to do. Promise you Pats would have ground them to dust and laughed all the way to the plane. Lets see Payton is a jerk for putting the brakes on. Would have been a jerk if he would have piled on another easy TD probably two. So whats left? Oh I have it. Lets just give the ball to the Bucs and stand aside so they can score a little. RIGHT! Guess you can see this boiled my butt! LOL now does this fool not know the Bucs have to meet us again in the Dome? Hope Payton see’s this story and smokes their a**! I’m sure if he did play well he had some help from a safety. Without going back and looking at game tape it would be impossible to tell but with a receiver like Moss I wouldn’t chance it with any corner going one on one besides Darrell Green, Dion Sanders etc. I know Darrell Revis did a good job against him this year but that’s still pretty risky.

Corners almost always have help from a safety

…when they need it. That’s what the safety is there for. Except, of course, when the safety blitzes, leaving the cornerback on his own—in which case, it’s good to have someone like Jabari Greer.

The better the corner plays, though, the less the safety has to help out. I’d love to hear from any Pats fans who remember Jabari, for good or ill.

I think

Greg Williams has a plan for Moss no dc in the league would leave him 1on1 with a corner i’m more worried about welker.
I seen some one on one of these threads with a good idea we hit Welker coming off the line with a linebacker to disrupt his route do any of you pat’s fans know if that strategy has been used AND HOW IT WORKED OUT

by simone219 on Nov 25, 2009 6:07 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

In 2007 Moss (with Brady) cleaned up against the Bills (6 TDs in 2 games)

In 2008 Moss (with Cassel) didn’t do so much, although one of those games had 75 mph gusts so the ball was mostly kept on the ground. One pass to Moss (around 17 yards), two to Welker, I think.

Wes Welker

This is the guy that scares me the most. Gregg Williams will have to find a way to neutralize Welker or he and Brady are going to shred our hobbled secondary. Plus, he’s a good punt returner too. Moss is a big-time threat, but the key to stifling the Pats’ O will be to not allow Brady to continuously connect with Welker.

well

when Wes played for the Dolphins, the Pats tried to double team him and he still got close to 80 yards or more in receiving.

Hi all

Colts fan here, happy to have Peyton on our side, and hoping you’ll see similar results with your Payton – see what I did there? ;-)

Anyway, I totally understand your anxiety – you’d think that the Pats-Colts contest would decide the fate of nations. But it so lived up to the hype when it finally came.

I’ll be rooting for the Saints… wouldn’t it be cool to hear the debate be Manning-Brees instead of Manning-Brady for a change?!?!

Good luck!

How can you not love a team that does this?

A colts fan travels to the big easy to jump on the beat the Pats bandwagon that’s ok you know we’ll be back in Indy and we’ll do our talking there The Saints will be a tough one but experience prevails the pats are 97/31 over the last 7 seasons the Saints 62/66 and we have a pretty good record in the big games not perfect but we get the job done the Saints will need to prove themselves with a win over a team like the Pats I don’t think the Saints have really been challenged this season by an explosive O like the Pats. This will be a real good look at both teams to see if they have what it takes to go all the way

explosive offenses

The Saints have played 4 of the top 10 scoring teams in the league (besides themselves, which they practice against every week). So, I’m not sure what you mean by “the Saints haven’t really been challenged this season by an explosive O like the Pats.”

by HB-NOLA on Nov 25, 2009 12:41 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Look at the common teams

Since it’s AFC East playing NFC South this year, there’s a lot to look at.

Bills. Saints win here by winning by 20, not 1.
  Pats (W) 25-24 (wk 1)
  Saints (W) 27-7 (wk 3)

Jets. The Pats got overrun by all of the poise. We showed the Pats how to beat the Bills, and they went with it. Advantage Saints for not losing.
  Pats (L) 16-9 (wk 2)
  Saints (W) 24-10 (wk 4)
  Pats (W) 31-14 (wk 11)

Falcons. I’m giving the Pats this one, because we nearly lost that game.
  Pats (W) 26-16 (wk 3)
  Saints (W) 35-27 (wk 8)

Bucs. Tie.
  Pats (W) 35-7 (wk 7)
  Saints (W) 38-8 (wk 11)

Dolphins. Tie Pats defense gave up half of what ours did, but we scored more points in the second half than the Pats did all game.
  Pats (W) 27-17 (wk 9)
  Saints (W) 46-34 (wk 7)

SAINTS WIN!

Great post BTW. I love the line about Coach’s bank account.

The Bucs stat, Saints could have easily put up another TD or two. Payton pulled the starters with 5 mins or so left. Pats put up everything they could . As for different Pats team. Who did they add? LOL

we didnt almost get beat by the falcons

i dont know why everyone keeps saying this… after recovering the onsides kick, they had like 20 secs to move the ball 50yds and then go for two to bring the game to overtime.

the rams, however, had a much better chance of beating us…

by DrewBreesManCrush on Nov 25, 2009 11:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If you look real, real close

and maybe you need my rose-colored glasses to see it, i’m not sure it was ever really close in any game, though a coach or two might have said, “Whew!” after the Rams game. I’m starting to believe there is a stealth mode in affect and I would also guess that we will turn off the cloaking device in the Pats game. Or, maybe another way to say it is that Sean Payton is the master of understatement (though if anyone follows that analogy, then, welcome to the nut house). This game will surely tell me whether I need to smash those rose-colored glasses or not.

I'm comparing the Saints and the Pats game vs each opponent

Maybe I oversimplified. But the Pats didn’t cough up the ball 4 times in their game, or at all. They gave up 100 less yards to Turner too. I didn’t see their game, but looking at the stats, it looks like they played better against the dirty birds than we did.

Monday

NOTE: Not a statistician

I believe that Monday both teams are going to show up in the dome gunning for bear. Numbers mean something until the kickoff. Plans mean everything once the play starts. But I think Sean has this great ability to have more “Huh?” Tricks in his bag than “that other guy”. Just when the other team MIGHT Think they know where he is going, he goes in a direction they would never have thought someone would even think of much less try.

We wouldn’t be calling this the Game of The Season if two really darn good teams weren’t facing off. Focus will be a factor that stats and planning won’t mean a thing if the men don’t each and every one of them bring 100 percent focus and heart and drive.

I believe they all win. They don’t play to NOT go to the SB… they both want it.

We have something the Pats don’t have. Match up the players and coaches and numbers but at the end of the day we have…

Gris Gris….

and dat is dat…

Looking forward to a game where the fans can not relax for even one second and neither can the players or coaches.

What seems wierd about the Pats

is their total dominance of the clock. That’s like a nine minute difference! That’s usually with a team that has a great rushing attack. That’s not the word I would use for the Pats rush. The scary thought is that their defense is just that good, but I’m not sure I buy that either. I’m just guessing that it’s a short passing game.

Does anyone have an answer?

Explosive

Even though the Giants, Eagles, and Falcons are in the top ten scoring teams 6th, 7th, and 9th I wouldn’t call them explosive and they are all .500 teams or a little better I was only saying this will be a good test for the Saints to have to pick it up a notch and see what you can do as well as for the Pats the Saints are #1 scoring fast and furious it’s going to be fun

Giants, Eagles and Falcons...

are all overly hyped teams until about week 5 or 6 then their true colors came out. I’m not using them as evidence of anything but I standby the fact that we are a dope team that I thinkg will give the Pats a ball game. If Payton keeps running it we will win! If we go away from that and try to shootout then it’s dangerous territory.

Don't worry I got your back cuz...

Wow!

Did y’all catch this!?!? Of course, to be honest, if he had lost I would be pooh-poohing it as an unimportant stat!

Now in his ninth NFL season, Drew Brees has faced the Patriots only twice. Both games came before 2006, when he played for the Chargers. Brees beat Bill Belichick and the Patriots in both games, once in 2005* and once in 2002.

SMP

here’s some info. Ongoing debate among Saints fans re: What to do re: Reggie. he’s dangerous, often productive (ties for team lead w/ tds) and versatile. Downside- he fumbled a few times at key junctures this season and others. Probably got too much criticism for that compared to other RBs. Debate re: running between the takles- mainly he can but it’s not a good idea for him to be the main RB like Portis or Gore for example especially when we have PT and Bell. Additionally, what lots of other NFL fans don’t know is we have tremendous depth especially at certain positions. We present HUGE matchup problems on offense because the following weapons can dominate a 1/4 a 1/2 or a game- ( and have) Colston, Bush, Shockey, Hendersom, P Thomas, Meachem, Moore, Bell. Our weakness is (was) FB position when Evans went down (he was awesome) but over the last 3 weeks that seems to be no longer a weakness but maybe we stilol miss Evans (Not maybe, definitely) but Payton has found a way to adapt and do other things (one of his strengths) Payton’s ability to create or tweak new plays for a particular opponent is infinite. WE are banged up in defensive secondary and run stooping DL but this week 1) some BDs will return,2) Some or one DL will return and subs have made Great strides filling in. Greg Williams is one of the best re 1) using what he’s got 2) devising great game plan 3) adjusting at halftime 4) sending pressure but not taking unnecessary or reckless risks like a Phila team does. Your Pats are very good.

Thanks for the info.

I always loved Heath Evans. He was very good for us and was also a receiving threat.
It also looks like Thomas is doing well for you, too. He did pretty well for us, but with McDaniels as our OC, the tight-ends weren’t used much in the passing game.

also meant to include re Reggie

has a tendency to dance and not get + yards sometimes in attempt to bust one. Sometimes hurts the consistency of our offense. Prior to this year he was a liability in pass-blocking but he has improved there. I was also saying your team is very good. Hard to assess though with your season as to how good. Clearly in top 2-5 teams in AFC, probably in top 2. This game is probably more important for you. We only have to play well. You need to win so as to get some home field advantage for playoffs because that would make your task much easier especially vs Indy or Miami, Pittsburgh, Cincy, San Diego, etc. Good luck to you except this game!!!

Thanks again.

The Pats have done well with or without home field advantage, I’m not worried. Here’s some things people don’t take into account looking at the Pat’s.

Brady was out of football for an entire season. Sure there was some getting used to defenders around his surgically reconstructed knee, but his timing was way off at the beginning of the season. Every receiver has multiple routes based on defensive reads, the timing needs to be right on all of those options. It wasn’t, and he and the receiver’s reads weren’t always on the same page. In fact, Galloway was seldom on the same page and when he was, he make rookie mistakes.
Not only that, but Moss and Welker had spent that year trying to get used to Cassel’s timing. They are alot closer now than they were at the beginning of the season. Brady should be able to get an earlier start to training next year if he doesn’t have to rebuild his knee.

I understand the game planning coach. That is Belichick’s strength as well. Expect the unexpected, and I’m sure we will do the same. Thanks for the info, it will make the game more enjoyable. Here’s hoping it’s injury free on both sides.

Excellent game!

Looks like Sean Payton won this chess match. The Pats D had no answer against the many weapons of the Saints. I’m glad I recorded this one. I’ll be rewatching this game for years to come. No. 9 was on fire and Gregg Williams was a coaching genius.
