Panthers are set to stop the Saints

Everyone here in Charlotte expect an upset Sunday. On the local radio shows their experts have the Panthers as their upset special. One betting guru has it as his lock of the year. They point out how successful Atlanta was running the football and some go as far to predict two 150 rushers against the Saints. They say Delholme will not throw more than 10 - 12 passes. They point to turnovers in the last two games. What do you guys think?

Turner

had a great game against us. Won’t take that away from him. What Atlanta has that the Panthers don’t have is a good QB with 2 serious threats. They have Smith but that’s really it. Delhomme just isn’t as good as Ryan, not even close to be blunt about it. If you dont have to show respect for the pass, then our run defense will keep them both below 75 yards for the game. Our run D was the highlight of our D last year and really isn’t that bad. I think we should take this game and will cancel the upset alerts that ppl have given them.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

For our handling of

huge running threat without passing threat, see Miami game.

I’m not saying this game is a lock, but if they want to go one dimensional for the win I do not like their chances.

On that note, you really didn't stop the Dolphins running game...

Not really. They did try it some, and failed. That’s (officially at least) why they stopped, it wasn’t working.

Receivers dropped passes in the last drive

i.e. Ted Ginn and swing pass to Ricky, not the OC’s fault, we left the door open with 2 min.+ to go.

True, but the recievers only started dropping passes because they were "thrown to"

Sure you guys stopped the WIldcat and all, but the standard run formation was demolishing your D. But inexplicably, Henning decided to put Henne in a shoot-out with Drew Brees, and the rest is history. Painful, sad, abysmal history.

Heh. OK, lets settle this with facts not slander. Henning isn’t stupid. He may have made a mistake, but it’s a mistake you would have made in his shoes too, and so would I. The fact remains that we gave up a grand total of 137 yards on the ground on 30 attempts. That’s it. Of that total, 68 was a single play where we got our butts reamed by a good RB and a few of our players took bad angles and either got blocked or took themselves out of the play. That means on the remaining 29 plays, we gave up a massive total of 69 yards rushing. That’s 2.37 YPC average, which is pretty amazing considering that our defense was getting “demolished” as you so blithely claim.

That same guy who had 68 yards on one play? In his remaining 8 attempts, he had 12 yards. That’s 1.5 YPC. Yeah he was really demolishing us there. Their other main RB? He has 16 attempts for 48 yards, with a long of 8. That’d 3.0 YPC. Again that’s really demolishing us there.

By now I’m sure I’ve proven my point. But when I get going, I don’t stop until I’ve demolished the opposition. (Thank you for giving me my new favorite word by the way.) So lets keep it up.

In the second half, they led off with a run play and lost a yard. Then an incomplete pass and an interception. So far not doing much to demolish us with anything, much less the run. Then their next play they obviously made a mistake by not coming back to the ground and went sack, completion, incomplete, punt. But they learned and came back to the run with the next drive. Guess what? No luck. One good run for 6 yards (not bad, but not by any means “demolishing” us), and two runs that went nowhere. 3-and-out-again.

Then their D gets the ball back for them and they have “learned” from their “mistake”. They try to run. Get 4 yards. Decent, but not demolishing us. Then they try to wildcat again. And frankly the only reason they lost only 4 yards (instead of 14) was the fact that Ronnie is a good RB. But they still lost yards. Incomplete pass on 3-10 and a field goal.

In four drives taking up most of the 3rd quarter, they’ve run the ball 6 times (out of a total of 12 plays not counting 2 punts and a FG). They have gained a grand total of 8 yards on the ground. That’s a YPC average of 1.33. Yeah, that’s really demolishing us on the ground there.

Then their next drive they get a long pass play and retake a 10 point lead, and almost immediately lose it. To start their first 4th Quarter drive they are up by 3 to a team they had on the ropes and the only thing that has had ANY real success at all for the entire second half is their passing game. Now tell me, Mr. Genius, would you try to run the ball, knowing your odds of going three and out — based on the four drives so far this half — are 50%? If so, then you are the one who is inexplicable.

by FriarBob on Nov 7, 2009 3:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

On second thought, their odds of 3-and-out were 80%. They had 5 drives, not four, and of them the only one that they had any success on was the one with the long passing play. The rest of that whole quarter, two drives primarily featured run and were 3-and-out and two others were 3-and-out with a mix.

So lets try that again. Its the start of the 4th quarter. You’ve given up 21 points and only scored 7 of your own. You have a whole quarter left to play and no matter what you do know KNOW that NO is getting the ball back, because there is a zero percent chance you hold it the entire quarter because you haven’t come remotely close to doing that all game. The best you’ve done all game was a 7 minute drive when the NO defense was still sleepwalking and adjusting to the scheme. In the second half you haven’t had a single drive last more than four plays. You KNOW there is no chance you hold the ball the entire quarter. You MUST try to score some points, and the only way you’ve done so is through the air. And on the ground you have a 1.33 YPC for the half.

So do you actually try to run the ball in that situation?

by FriarBob on Nov 7, 2009 4:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh and just as one last note, their wildcat they ran 13 running plays for 29 yards. That 2.2 YPC. The other 16 running plays (aside from the one really big play), we gave up 40 yards. That’s 2.5 YPC.

Wow, that’s a HUGE improvement there. /sarc

So much for Miami’s standard run formation “demolishing” us.

What Carolina has that ATL doesn't have is...

A 2 headed monster of a running attack, and a power running o-line. Carolina has 2 backs better than Turner, who is washed up this year. And the lack of a passing game means the Saints will stack the box. All that means is it might take DeAngelo a couple extra tries to get through… but when he does, just like last week it’ll go for 70+ yards.

This is absurd. Only one player carries the ball at a time, so this “2-headed monster” business is just silly. And the lack of a passing game means the Saints will win. All that means is that we take the division and you sit at home this time.

Agree

if they have a 6-7 min. drive for a rushing TD, we might score 3 times in 6-7 min. I’m more worried about Peppers on the LT or possibly deflecting a pass or 2, but Brees is very aware of his wing span, Peppers takes plays off and wanted out of Carolina before the season so not overly worried of him, just no more injuries Heath Evans has been the biggest.

Nope.

It won’t be an upset, it will be a rivalry win or loss. Rivalries can’t really be upsets, there’s too much emotion involved that anything can and will happen. Bottom line is if the Saints are 15-0 and Carolina is 0-15 (or vice versa), it’s still anyone’s game.

As far as preparation, the Saints have prided themselves on continuing to improve and looking week to week. The best thing that could’ve happened to them to prepare for this game is winning ugly against Atlanta, which they did. They recognized a lot of areas to improve and understand they still have a long way to go to be Superbowl champs.

I honestly expect the Saints to go in hungry and play a good game of football. It will be much more clean and efficient. I likewise feel that Carolina will come to play. They always play their best football against the Saints. It’s going to be a great game.

They have a great run team but no pass game to speak of. I think Greg Williams will put 8 in the box to stop the run and make Jake beat us with his arm. Also they have a great pass rush and we need to run max protection on pass plays to keep drew up right and stop Peppers

Did you see DeAngelo's 77 yarder last week?

That’s what happens when you put 8 in the box. You have no one but a deep safety to stop him when he does get through.

The Only problem I have with your argument is....

Delhomme will have to throw the ball more than 10-12 times. We have been very successful on offense scoring on every team this year. I can see your team having some success on the ground, but I don’t see you having that severely unbalanced game plan and outscoring us. Our defensive scheme will be to 1) force Jake to throw the ball 2) take away Steve Smith long receptions. Unless Jason David or Fred Thomas come back, I think we can force Jake to throw and our upgraded secondary can rise to the occasion. If we get Fujita and/or Ellis back, I have confidence in our run defense and even if they don’t come back this week, the guys that filled in will handle the run better than last week with some adjustments. Jake won't need to throw because your run defense sucks

You are too banged up. DeAngelo and Stewart will alternate, creating long 8-9 minute drives. Breeze won’t have much of a chance, because he’ll be on the bench waiting for you guys to find a run stop.

That's fine, take 8 to 9 minutes to score.

Still leaves 6 more for the Saints to score. Course, I’d like to see how well that rushing does for you when you’re down by 14. I’m all for your 8-9 minute drives then.

I'm already hearing it too...

“…oh dude, the Panthers are gonna bury your Saints, bro!”

Followed immediately by me rolling my eyes and walking away.

Won’t happen.

Yeah, they laid one on the Cardinals Sunday. However, the Cards have the WORST rushing offense in the universe (or at least close to it), so the Panthers defense just teed off on Warner. I think we all remember what happens when you rattle Kurt Warner from the earlier part of this decade – y’know when the Saints played him twice a year (three times one year! :) ) and just threw the kitchen sink at him every time he went back to pass? No? Reminder – he gets happy feet, and starts throwing the ball at everything but his receivers. That is how the Panthers won – no rushing threat, hit Warner every play, no offense for the Cards.

On the flipside, the Saints defense will be facing the mirror image of the Cards with the Panthers. Jake is on his last legs, and Smith being such a “me first” jerkoff isn’t helping him at all. All they have is their rushing game. Williams will be putting 8-9 in the box, with Sharper ready to bail if it appears to be a passing play. I agree with skinnykinney, no way they rack up 300 yards rushing on us – this ain’t Tampa folks! ;-)

Further, the Saints will do everything they can to get up early and big. If they succeed, it’s game over for the Panthers, they’re just not built to come back against a 2+ score deficit with the way their passing game is such a failure. However, they’ll sure TRY, and that is when it becomes feeding time at the Sharper/Greer Zoo. IF (and it is IF after the past two slow starts for our boys) the Saints get up, Jake will be giving big fat game balls to guys in Saints uniforms.

This is a W for NO, and I’m expecting a fairly convincing one, say 31-13 or so.

If not, I’ll all-but guarantee the last game or two will get thrown.

…not cocky, just confident.

Plus, living un Cackalacky, I’ve got a good bead on the Panters from being forced to suffer through their games this season, and I know exactly what the strengths and weaknesses of the team are. Not so many strengths, plenty of weaknesses, by the way, which will be exploited Sunday.

The Saints are built to beat them.

If you think the Saints have nothing to lose, you’re not paying attention, they have a one game lead on the Vikes for home field advantage, and they will press it home until they lock that down. If that means walking all over the Panters, so be it.

New Orleans Int

I would venture to say that I’ve been to more airports than the majority if not everyone on here, and I really like MSY. It’s a cool little airport. I just wished all the shops and restaurants stayed open a bit later.

Some others that rank pretty high to me are:

Atlanta (Mainly because they have really cool vending machines that cell all sorts of stuff and a great USO)

Minneapolis/St. Paul (Really pretty airport with lots of artwork and amenities. There’s a good mix of things and food places no matter where you fly or who you fly with.)

Dallas (Really easy to get around and quickly, lots of seating, and an amazing USO!)

There are several airports I despise. Salt Lake City, Chicago, Phoenix, Seattle/Tacoma, Newark, D.C., Baltimore, and Denver (I swear I wanted to beat-down nearly everyone I came across there. Ridiculously rude.)

No, not in the freight biz...

…but I’m an USAF/Delta brat, dad was a military/commercial pilot, so I spent a LOT of time flying from city to city, and got to know the airport codes very well. Also, using “GSO” for Greensboro is a shorthand that almost everyone here in town uses anyhow.

I drive ‘em crazy at work, because I refer to our retailers by their airport city codes a lot of the time, just out of habit (i.e. ATL, MCO, SFO)…bunch of artist/musicians don’t do well with that stuff…

…Hooahsaint, yeah, there are some flat-out AWFUL airports out there. MSY is pretty decent, I also like MCO well enough, but that’s probably more a familiarity issue than anything else (lived in Orlando for 20+ years), and I really like GSO, very user-friendly but sadly few carriers serve it, and those that do charge a fortune to fly in/out of here. :-\

Bad airports: Tampa, Charlotte, Washington-Dulles, Miami, NY Kennedy, London Gatwick, Paris Orly, Houston Hobby. And yeah, Denver, while very pretty is kinda ruined by the PEOPLE…strange, because the city is fairly nice…

I suppose it could happen. It depends on three things or maybe four:

1) Whether our defense plays up to its potential as a team or down to the level of its individual components.

2) Whether our offense can put up an insurmountable lead or not.

3) Which Jake shows up.

Bonus 4) Whether the refs can call the game remotely close to accurately or not.

A lot seems to be made of Jake’s undefeated record in the Dome. Well a lot was made of Big Ben’s undefeated record in Ohio before the PIT@CIN game a few weeks back. And regardless of which team was truly better, his record isn’t unsullied anymore. So even if CAR was undeniably the better team, even then his record could get snapped.

Both records were amassed mostly against bad teams. CIN has been horrible for most of the past 20 years, with only two years they were quite good and a couple others they were semi-decent. And as much as it pains me to say so, such was the case with the Saints for much of the last 10 years as well, although they had quite a few more they were at least semi-decent than CIN did. So was his undefeated record because he was so awesome, or because his team was better? The answer is pretty obvious when you think about it. Only two years was his team clearly not the better team, and in one of them we haven’t played yet, and in the other Payton threw the game to save his boys for the playoffs.

So the record really means jack squat when all is said and done. And even if this year isn’t the year, eventually that record will be tarnished and everybody will realize what it really means, that his team was better, not he himself.

“3) Which Jake shows up.”

Exactly. Delhomme is an extremely ERRATIC quarterback. Erratic as in “inconsistent”, not necessarily “bad”. To put his career into nursery rhyme perspective, Jake is the little girl with the little curl, right in the middle of his forehead. When he’s good, he’s VERY, VERY good. But when he’s bad … he’s f*cking HORRID. Ok, Mother Goose never said “f*king”. I just threw that in there for good measure.

as for me

I have looked into the kitty kats… they do have rushing… but don’t have the wildcat, so its just another Offense for our D to stop, nothing fancy, just football…

other than that I don’t see you guys(panthers) passing.. you will avoid it at all costs just knowing sharper and greer and porter are out there…

we will adapt, just like all the other games…

you may have gotten a ton of intercepts last game, but this is D. Brees, he may give you one, maybe 2… but not what your thinking…

as said above, get +2 TD’s on them, get it quick, make them pass, watch them implode….

P.S. to the panthers fans: MIA, and ATL came in talking the same trash… yeah we played sloppy, but we still creamed MIA, and won ATL …we wont be making those mistakes again (i hope)

P.P.S.

they are already thinking about running the wildcat!! hahaha (just went over to their website)

http://www.catscratchreader.com/ “Should the kitties run the wildcat?”

well I’ve hear MIA is the best running it, what do you guys(saints fans) think about this?

I think it will fail…

Won't even be close

Saints are for the most part healthy and deeper in more positions than they ever were. This is going to be another 40+ victory for New Orleans.Fanchise record. 8-0.

by Lyle Lirette on Nov 5, 2009 6:17 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

You guys are not healthy on your d-line

Which plays exactly into Carolina’s strength. Listen, if the Panthers put up 250+ yards on the #1 rushing defense, then your banged up crew won’t have a chance stopping DeAngelo and Stewart.

Haha

We see how you guys have laid a wooping on TB and Washington lol. Those were close games too! Then you guys beat the Cards, i’ll give you credit for that but their team isn’t the playoff team from last year. Let’s look at something more like the Philly and Atl game which you lost and we won.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

by skinnykinney on Nov 5, 2009 11:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but here’s the question. Did Arizona’s #1 run defense come against good rushing teams?

I’m sure you don’t care, but before we cold-cocked them into the next zip code the Giants came in with a top defense. But their defensive ranking wasn’t because they were so awesome. It was because their opposition was so horrid.

ARI gave up 92 to the Jags, a team that isn’t all that great period, run or pass. Not terribly impressive. Then they gave up 126 to the Colts, a team with a great passing offense but who at times this year looked like they’d have trouble running on the Raiders. They followed this up by shutting down the Texans which is about as impressive as shutting down the Raiders. Then they shut down the Seahawks who don’t have a single RB on their entire roster. Getting very impressive now. And then they gave up 107 to a Giants team that is in complete meltdown-mode. The only even semi-impressive run D event for them was shutting down San Fran in the opener.

No the answer to the initial question is a resounding NO! It was in fact exactly the opposite, their ranking was grossly inflated by playing horrible teams. While our ranking is still in the top 10 despite playing several at least decent running teams and two very good ones. And one of them we shut down, and the other we played badly against and also had some of the worst officiating I’ve seen in awhile helping them out.

So will you run all over us to the tune of 250+ yards? Only if A) your guys get away with holding every third play, B) our defense play like crap, C) your defense also completely shuts down our offense, and D) GW suddenly has an aneurysm and forgets how to make halftime adjustments.

by FriarBob on Nov 5, 2009 11:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Arz's run defense is still better than yours

That is considering your injuries. If a warn out Turner, who has been unable to run on anybody, put up over 150 yards on you… then it is perfectly logical to think that Carolina, who has 2 RBs better than Turner, and a o-line better at running then ATL, would put up big numbers running the ball.

Oh and by the way… NFLN agrees ;)

I think the Saints will win

but like someone already mentioned…. divisional games can be tricky. i think the atlanta games was closer than a lot of anticipated. it really boiled down to the last second. whenever a game gets that close, it’s anybody’s game.

i personally don’t think carolina is as talented as atlanta, but the possibility still exists. a bad game from the saints and carolina can easily hand us our first loss. i don’t think that will happen because payton and co are really good at keeping everyone’s focus aligned.

i don’t see enough threats on the panther’s side of the ball to really make me worry. i have a feeling that this game will be a blow out. i think the saints were very sloppy the last few weeks and will emphasize cleaning things up. injuries are going to slow us down a little but for the most part, i think we have this game in hand.

either way, it will be fun.

It's not about whose best

The Giants were not better than the Patriots talent wise when they beat them in the Superbowl. It was just that the Giants were built to beat the Patriots. Same here. The Saints are better than the Panthers, no doubt about it. But the Panthers are designed to run, run, run… and run defense is exactly your weakest spot. And the Panther’s running game means long drives keeping Breeze off the field… And when he does get on the field, he is up against the league’s top pass defense. The Panthers are just built for this game.

you are right, it's not about the best...

I’m glad to hear you are all about your team! But stats don’t lie, including your past games(as I mention in another post on here) you really haven’t played many good teams…

not only that, but your team is lopsided(just like the saints were in previous years).. you can’t throw and we couldn’t run… but now, we can do both, so relying on just your pass d won’t cut it. BTW how IS your rush D?

Not only that but I’ve heard this “not the best teams always win” before… and T.O.P before… that was the phin fans that keep preaching that! …and the wildcat would be our undoing…

well we saw what happened there. The saints started, to stop the pus*ycat, they(mia) changed it up and lost… badly.

So why do you really think your team is better than the falcons? (even though you lost to them) and can beat us? (even though we beat them)

the run D isn't our weakest spot

special teams is. I don’t see how you guys are built to beat us. IDK what’s going on with your defense but I don’t think it’s going to stop our offense since we can run the ball too. Brees is a beast in the playaction pass. Then you come back with Brees and Co. not being on the field b/c you will run it all day on us. I don’t see that happening. Sure, you’ll probably have some big runs but is it enough to put up 30+points? I don’t think so. That’s what it’ll take to beat us. We have scored 30+ in 5 out of 7 games. The Buffalo game, we ran the ball b/c their O couldn’t beat our D even for a TD, they had to get it on a special teams fake. The Jets played us well but we still put up 24. We actually aren’t that bad of a run D. Last weeks game will show differently but they were more concerned about Ryan throwin to White and Gonzo than them running the ball alot. This week will be different. You’re one dimensional plus we owe you guys for last year’s game at the end of the season :P

Actually, the Giants team schemed to stop them. Not that they were tailor made to do so. Add in the fact that they had just played them a few weeks earlier and knew most of their tricks, and that NE was obviously fading over those last few weeks, and they hit them at the perfect time to pull it off.

The only area you fit there is that we may be fading as well.

And as somebody else said, our rush D is not our weakest spot at all. It’s actually ranked higher than our pass D. Oops.

Giants won on a desperation heave by Manning.

But that’s beside the point. You’re forgetting to argue the other side of the fence.

We have one of the top turnover producing defenses in the league and you have one of the top interception throwing quarterbacks . . . you can’t run 70 times, he’s gonna have to throw it sometime.

One of the top passers against one of the top defensive secondaries . . . I fail to see how this is an advantage for you.

Saints are ALSO 4th in the league in rushing . . . one higher than Carolina I believe. HERE’S A FUN FACT, THOUGH. CAROLINA IS 24TH AGAINST THE RUN!!! SO HOW DO YOU PROPOSE TO STOP OUR 8-9 MINUTE DRIVES?

by Hooahsaint on Nov 6, 2009 2:06 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

This is an advantage because Carolina will probably throw less than 15 times.

You bring up a great point about Carolina being 24th against the run. They began the season horrible, but added some key positions and now are much improved… The last few games, not a single rusher has even 50 yards. You guys on the other hand started strong and now are struggling. If you don’t think this is the Panthers advantage then you are just not being realistic

Let's look at this again

Saints Passing Offense – 6th Carolina’s Passing Defense – 1st
Saints Rushing Offense – 4th Carolina’s Rushing Defenes – 24th

Carolina’s Passing Offense – 25th Saints Passing Defense – 17th
Carolina’s Rushing Offense – 5th Saints Rushing Defense – 11th

So let’s look at those a bit. With a 25th ranked passing offense, Carolina can only hope to run, in which case the Saints are ranked 11th and should be able to play respectively at least, especially considering how one dimensional Carolina is. However, the Saints are ranked 6th in passing offense and 4th in rushing offense giving them the top ranked offense in the league. Carolina has the number one spot on passing defense, but they’re 24th against the run. That means that once again, the Saints will likely outrush their opponent.

Turnovers will be the biggest factor and only possible thing that can save the Panthers. Much like the Atlanta game.

Here's what I find funny

We could easily loose this game vs. Carolina. We’re banged up in some places that may be problematic, Delhomme and Steve smith usually have good games against us, we’re due for a letdown, it is unlikely we will go unfefeated even though we have an excellent team- it’s just so hard to do. But, even if we lose, it’s no big deal. We are still an amazing team that had a bad day. Still in first place in our division, still at least tied for #1 seed in playoffs and Carolina still is as mediocre as they come. Not down there with Raiders, Detroit or Cleveland or even washington, but not one of the NFL’s elite teams. But, having said that I think we win because it’s in the dome and everyone will be fired up because if we win this game, it will make it pretty hard for us to lose this division and the anti- Carolina sentiment is so strong, the crowd will carry the team and it may be a dogfight. And in the back of everybody’s mind (including Jake’s) is when will Sharper get that next pick 6 to tie the all-time NFL record?

i like it..

I think that pressure will be a great factor here for that reason philinwood…

If we lose, we are still in a commanding lead, if they lose, they can only hope for a wildcard spot (doubtful)
Sharper will be watching putting presure to run more, and we can adapt forcing them to throw OR forcing their coaching staff to adapt (which from their own mouths), they don’t do this well

plus if 1 of those players (double trouble) gets hurt, or even gets tired… it will put even more pressure on the other and down they go

I expect a strong show, until half-time when we adjust and they don’t… and either 1) implode like giants or 2)fight but the gap in score widens

Let's look at what happened vs. the predictions.

1. Williams got his yards. They were right about that.
2. The Saints turned the ball over twice. They were right about that.
3. Delhomme threw the ball 30 times. They were wrong about that.
4. The Saints won. They were wrong about that, which was the big error.
