Reggie's Leap

I'm sure we all remember Reggie Bush's 6 yard TD leap against the Giants a few weeks back.  Here's a hypothetical scenario I was discussing on another site.  Just curious to see how many of you will come up with the correct answer.  Suppose Reggie's leap had occurred on a passing play.  Had he caught the ball in mid-leap and extended it across the goal line, just as he did on the actual play, what would the proper call be?

He would be out of bounds incomplete pass

He has to come down with both feet in bounds.Just like if he caight it at the back of the endzone and caught it in bounds and his momentum carried him out without getting both feet down

Your question isn’t terribly clear. I don’t remember a play against the Giants, btw, I remember one against the Dolphins tho, is that what you meant?

If so, then yeah if he caught the ball in the air then the only way it would count is if he brought either both feet or something else that counts the same — such as an elbow — down in-bounds in the endzone before any part of his body touched the ground out-of-bounds.

He would be out of bounds

I don’t think he would have to get two feet down, just an arm or a butt or something. But if he caught the ball in mid-air and never touched the playing field, I don’t think it would be considered a catch. And I believe they changed the force out rule so even if he was pushed out of bounds, it still would have been an incomplete catch.

he'd be out

b/c no part of his body touched the field to make it even close, much less 2 feet that is required. Incomplete pass, no TD.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

That’s correct. Incomplete pass. And yes, I meant the Dolphins game.

Also, had the same play happened further away from the sidelines and he was driven back out of the end zone in mid air, he would be given forward progress based on where the ball was when he landed (assuming second effort didn’t result in him breaking the plane again). The reason being that he wouldn’t have established possession until he landed.
