Is it just me?
Or is anyone else worried about the Saints playing only one half of football three games in a row. I am euphoric that the Saints are 8 - 0. I also realize the SOS would be 5 - 3 right now. However, you can't keep falling behind by 2 touchdowns and keep coming back. At least not against the really good teams. I'm afraid of the Saints falling into bad habits. Additionally, I am concerned over the Saints lack of an identity. They are all over the place. The really quality teams are teams with an identity. On defense the Saints look to always be scrambling and on offense, they are turning the ball over way too much.

It is concerning...
that the Saints have been in the hole to start the last few games. But, being the optimist, I find it reassuring that they still found a way to win, as ugly as it is sometimes. As far as identity, are you speaking about the fact that they recieve little or no national exposure? So what? I had a friend tell me yesterday that if they win 16 reg season games and get blown out in the playoffs, it will all be for nothing. Although I had to argue with him cause he was talking smack about my Saints, he’s right. They need to play smash mouth football, keep the respect they have and gain more.
Or, if by identity you mean a single theme, don’t need it.
Who Dat?
By identity
I mean a comment to a philosphy, making the other team adapt to your game and the other way around. The Saints seem to just go with the flow and lets the other team dictate the pace and tenor of the game and then adapts their game to fit within those parameters. I would like to see the Saints force the other team to do the adapting. Look at each game since Buffalo and you will see this pattern. The exception were the Lions and the Giants games those were games in which they dictated the tempo and pattern of the game and the other team couldn’t answer. In every other game this season the Saints have not forced the action. You can get away with this with the middle and weaker teams, but the elite teams will take advantage of this laissez-faire attitude to football. I want to see the Saints more proactive and do the dictating.

I have an error in my post above.
It reads “and the other way around.” It should read and “and not the other way around.” Sorry, typing faster than I was thinking.

Consider this . . .
We are half way through the season and the other teams have been studying the HELL out of both our offense and defense. Why? Well, how ‘bout because we are undefeated and a major threat? After eight games, any kinks in our armour begin to show. That’s why, across the league, things start to go bonkers the second half of every season! Did you see what the Bucs did this week? Holy crap. . . . didn’t see that coming!
Games are going to continue to be more challenging so we had better get used to it. An undefeated season is a mathmatical improbability so I’m not concentrating on that as much as I am concentrating on the playoffs!
I continue to believe, FIRMLY, that the key to an undefeated season is very few injuries and very, very few penalties! We had 65 penalty yards against Atlanta and 55 against Carolina. Not good. Injuries are usually inflicted upon us. Penalties are self-inflicted wounds! So – let’s “accept the things we cannot change and change the things we can.”

I firmly believe that “cleaning up” penalties and turnovers is nothing more than lip service from coaches and players. No one is TRYING to commit these infractions … they just tend to occur during the course of a three hour game. Let’s face it, you’re never going to see Drew Brees standing in the pocket with his right arm cocked back to throw and his second hand on the ball, JUST IN CASE there’s a DE looming in his blind spot. Conversely, you’re never going to see Jermon Bushrod throw his hands in the air, like a DB saying “not me, boss!” if he’s been beaten badly on an inside swim move. He’s going to grab two handfuls of jersey, do whatever it takes to protect Brees from getting driven into the turf and pray that his holding isn’t detected by any onlooking zebras. Let’s give our opponents what little credit they deserve. Our so-called mental errors and turnovers are often times the direct result of outstanding plays on their part. Just as Tracy Porter’s interception of Matt Ryan was a great play, so was Chris Gamble’s interception of Brees on practically an identical break on the ball. Sure, Brees should have thrown it into such tight coverage, but when does he refrain from doing that any other time? There was a pass to Shockey I believe, that was caught inbetween three defenders. “What pinpoint accuracy!” we say as Saints fans. Yet, if the ball is intercepted, it’s suddenly all the QB’s fault. Why? It’s the same exact ill-advised pass + a heads up play by an opponent. Sure, in a perfect world, no one is ever going to fumble or commit a penalty. a.) it’s not a perfect world. b.) even if it was, those silly laws of perfection would behoove our opponents just as much as they would us.

You're WRONG
Brees throws into tight coverage all the time. We have scored many tds on passes thrown into tight coverage. When you have a qb like Brees, you have to live with the ints to get the tds. The same thing happens to Peyton Manning. I am not worried about the ints, it’s the fumbles. When you pass in the NFL, great interceptions will happen, but some of the fumbles the Saints have made are foolish. The Bell fumble against Atlanta comes immediately to mind. One thing I didn’t note and should have is stupid penalties. Holding could be called on every offensive play in the NFL. But the false starts are just stupid.
