Bush looked frustrated
He carried one for 9 yards and was pulled immediately after. It was a good run right inside the tackle in which he didn't show any hesitation and exploded through the hole. He seemed a bit frustrated when they pulled him after that run. Then later, he had another run, this time for 7 yards. Again it was a good run and again he was pulled right after. His frustration showed that time to, and he had the look of, "What do I have to do?" on his face.
He did get a pretty good number of touches in the passing game, but I'm sorry, I can't understand why you would switch out a back that just got you a 9 yard carry or 7 yard carry. Conventional wisdom would dictate you run them till they stop it. I could understand the arguments before when PT and Bell were performing better in the game, why run Reggie. But, they weren't in this game. Neither of them were rattling off runs of 5+ much less a 7 or 9 yard gain. I really felt that if they had stuck with Bush, he'd have broken one. He seems really hungry lately.

I will tell you that he slammed his helmet on the table
after that pass went off his hands.

replay shows defender tipped it...
but maybe he’ll get more carries next week. At least he got a few more passes this week. He had some key 1st downs.
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
Yeah, I saw that.
I think he saw the endzone and didn’t secure the ball first. He only had that safety to beat, and was already crossing him up when he dropped the ball . . . not that it was a particularly easy catch, but one he should’ve had.

Reggie is great and all...
And, he was supposed to be a ‘savior’ of sorts, kinda like Ricky Williams was supposed to do. But, now there are so many weapons on the team now, he’s a PARTof the game plan, not THE game plan.
Who Dat?
u must be new around here!!!
Cuz we’ve debated this topic to def (not death).
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
I would NEVER compare Reggie to Ricky.
Ricky Williams was (is?) a dope head and a nut job all rolled into one. He did things that not only hurt the team but also hurt his body. Reggie is in fantastic shape and just needs to have that “light” go on in his head that shows him how to be a professional football player and not a USC darling!
I remember reading an article (decades ago) about a team that had a special entrance for the rookies at training camp. By the door was a sign hanging on a trash can that said, “Leave your press clippings here.”
Too cool!

"...how to be a professional football player..."
what are you talking about?! Sounds like projection to me. The dude has been getting like 6 touches (not just carries but touches) a game. And he hasn’t complained. He’s lowering his shoulder. He’s had a few nice runs between the tackles this season as well. So, I think “you” think he thinks he’s a USC darling and so just assume he thinks so too. Let’s not make up stuff that we can’t substantiate Just.

I think the Saints may be saving somethings
For game 10 and not showing all their weapons until they need them. The Saints can lose any other game, but they need New England. They need to show to themselves they can beat the big bad Patriots before the playoffs start. My hope is unleash Reggie on the Patriots, who don’t look as fast as they used to.

Ajun Cajun - VERY GOOD!
Can you imagine a bottle up, emotionally super-charged, foaming-at-the-mouth Reggie Bush being unleashed against the New England Pattycakes? Wouldn’t that be fantastic!?! I know, deep down in my gut, that Reggie is going to have one of those “one in a season” games and it would be sweet if it was against NE.
Now, I know “coldpizza” is going to join in and crap in my Corn Flakes when it comes to Reggie but, hey, I think “senastruck” hit the nail on the head, “he’s a PART of the game plan, not THE game plan.”

I've been thining and hoping that too
since last night. Maybe some of you guys are right and Payton is just waiting to unleash him. Maybe he’s getting in the head of Bellichick and under utilizing Bush. IDK.
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
I don't think that's it.
I think Reggie had to start over this year. He’s working himself INTO the rotation now. Getting treated like a 3rd string back. He has to prove to Payton he can be relied on to hold onto the ball and get the tough yards. I’d have to say that this week helped his case more than hurt it.

i agree
i think he has to earn his spot on field and like any other 3rd string back he needs to take what he gets and be happy with it. he brought this on himself by dancing around and fumbling

Either way, he contributes every week and we keep winning!!
It did seem like it would have been a good idea to get him the ball more this game. But, it’s hard to really criticize Payton, he is doing a good job lately.

He got more touches this week
No TD, but more touches. And he made the most of them. He’s getting a lighter version of the same rotation everyone else gets on the Saints offense. He should be pleased with what he got yesterday. They looked his way more, and he made the most of it. He may have proven more productive running than PT or Bell if he had gotten to stay in for a full series somewhere, but at least he wasn’t getting the Stecker-esque workload of late. He’s still got plenty of time to have a few great days if they come his way, and the lull in high-caliber opposition should boost everyone’s individual achievements the next few weeks.
What you have to do is to turn his little body over so that when he does get it, he lands on his head and he doesn’t come back in for a while." -- Gregg Williams on Steve Smith.
And did you see
Reggie’s one handed catch. The pass was behind him and he still palmed it! Athletic individual! I hope Payton unleashes the hounds on New England and Reggie is leading the way.

My favorite of his catches in this game
Really showed he has great hands and should be given more looks.
i thought reggie ran well yesterday
and was really hoping to see him get more touches in the run game. the more he runs the ball, the more effective as a decoy he’ll be.
I'm just providing you all the opportunities you need to voice your opposition.
You haven’t met your anti-Reggie quota this week.

I'd be that way too
if I kept making some big runs/plays then get yanked immediately. I honestly don’t know if he had been in for a few plays by then and it was just time for him to rotate with PT or if Payton just randomly pulled him. What I do notice, is how the Panthers D except for like one guy went for Reggie on a fake run or toss or something that ended up going to PT. If Evans wouldn’t have touched the one guy, it would’ve been a good first down. Also, PT and Bell are getting consistent carries in the game and they deserve it but Reggie has been doing pretty good with his limited touches(and he finally looked on the same page as Brees on the swing passes) but can’t get more than a few touches in a series. What I mean is that PT can get 7 carries on an 11 play drive while Reggie gets 1 carry(maybe) or 1 or 2 passes on a similiar drive. I just think that you can’t plug and play RBs like that really. Look at Bell this week. He got sporadic touches and didn’t do much(YPC) with them. Same with Bush. When Bush makes a good play it seems like Payton is afraid something bad will happen next and yanks him. Give him more consistent carries/touches in a drive, not sporadic over the game. If PT picks up a hot hand, by all means go with him but don’t yank a guy after one of the longest runs that we had had all day.
Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
“If PT picks up a hot hand, by all means go with him but don’t yank a guy after one of the longest runs that we had had all day.”
Pierre had runs of 10 and 12 yards in the game and actually broke a tackle when he “lowered his shoulder” (OMFG what a stud!!!!!) to convert a key first down (as opposed to dropping the ball). It seems as though Payton is already heeding your advice by not playing Bush.

In Reggie’s defense, he’s up to 3.959 yards per carry on the season. Talk about flirting with greatness for the first time in a promising young career! If he keeps this up, he’s sure to be cryongenically frozen alongside Ted Williams, before all is said and done.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I like Pierre Thomas
He is a good back, but he is not as explosive as Reggie is. What is being said is for the Saints to get the long Reggie runs they have to use him more and give him the opportunities or design plays to get him in a situation where he is on a broken field. Thomas will get you 10 and 12, even 20 yard runs, but his 50+ runs will be few and far between, because fast corners can close on him.

Neither has ever had a 50+ yard carry in the pros.

Reggie has had several
50 yard+ gains in the pros. Off the top of my head, I’m not sure if any were rushing, but I know he has had them pass catching.

True
But when Pierre has a 10 or 12 yard carry, they don’t take him out and put Bell in. The point skinny was making is if you get a 9 yard carry on first down from your back (whoever he is), you give the ball to him on second down and keep giving it to him till they stop it. That’s football 101.
"The key to them winning is to limit their quarterback to under 20 throws a game." -Chris Carter
Actually...
The point of the original post was the Reggie is getting frustrated with getting pull after a productive carry. The response was that Pierre was doing better. My point was that maybe Reggie should get more carries even if Pierre is gettting an extra yard by bowling over a tackler, because Reggie has the potential to make that tackler miss altogether and go the distance.

I’m pretty sure every back in the NFL has the POTENTIAL to do that. It’s the ones who actually do it that are considered elite and earn the right to carry the ball more often. I’m not saying that’s the case with Thomas, because he’s not a franchise back. We don’t have a franchise back, imo. We have two pretty solid RBs and one PR that still can’t seem to find his groove as a RB 3 1/2 years into his professional career.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
How much do you know about the NFL?
Most long gainer are either from over play by the defense or by attrition. Where a constant pounding of the defense has tired them and made them succeptible to the long run. My point has always been that Reggie needs space for those long gainers and enough opportunities to break them. What do you think a rb breaks off a long gainer every other play? You want one or two a game. As for finding his groove, he was one the leagues leading scorers until injured. You are right in that Reggie will never be a between the tackles, 20 to 30 carries a game back. Where he will shine is getting 10 to 15 touches in space a game. In those touches, if consistently given them, he has proven he will break one or two of them. By the way, I don’t think Pierre Thomas or Mike Bell or 30 carries a game guys either.

“In those touches, if consistently given them, he has proven he will break one or two of them.”
Not since his two knee surgeries he hasn’t. Also, how many carries did it take DeAngelo Williams to break a 50+ yarder on the Saints Sunday? It just takes elite speed and vision. Reggie has/had the former. I’m not sure he’ll ever have the latter.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
They took Pierre out and put Bush in! What’s the difference?
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Pierre only had a 3 yard game, if that.
"The key to them winning is to limit their quarterback to under 20 throws a game." -Chris Carter
and reggie converted first downs too on some big plays
and reggie has been lowering his shoulders. He’s not been dancing the past couple games and he’s been making ppl miss. He had 2 runs, one for 9 yards and the other for 7 yards. btw, since i think you missed it, i said one of the longest runs, not the single longest run. Reggie averaged 8 yards a carry and was playing well but only got 2 carries. He really heeded my advice by letting Reggie average 8 yards a carry in this game but only let him have 2 carries. Seems like Reggie had the hot hand there. I know, I know. You’re going to say that it’s 2 carries, doesn’t prove anything. I don’t see how he’s going to prove anything getting 2 carries a game.

What happened to
the formation where Reggie goes into motion and you either fake it to a rb or you pitch it or flat pass it to Reggie? This season when I’ve seen it, it’s been a handoff to the rb. This again could be something they are saving for the Pat My A$$. Footnote: since they haven’t let them video tape the other team practices, they are not doing so well against the more inventive teams.

I think all the talk of him dancing too much has gotten in his head. He seems to be trying to run over corner as of late, and i love it. He was very productive yesterday, and made some key first downs. I love PT and Bell, but I do not trust them on 3rd and short like i do Reggie. He just seems to be a more determined runner and more aware of the first down marker. I have seen PT fall short of the first down so many times I wanna slap my children. Therefore, we need to use Reggie more near the endzone as well, the man just smells that goal line and can get it in, he can practically fly in from 6 yards out. So i love the way this team is going, NE is gonna be a big test on Monday night, i can’t wait, but watch for this running attack with Reggie, PT and Bell to be great at Tampa.
WHO DATT?
If we only used Reggie on the goal line, I know a whole lot of Saints fans who would be VERY, VERY happy. Not the guy cutting the checks, mind you.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Reggie is not a short yardage back
He is a back that needs space to be effective. Bell is the short yardage guy. If Reggie would specialize in anything it is as a third down back on passing downs and on first down.
Ajun Cajun exiled to Charlotte. I miss Mardi Gras and the Jazz Fest so much I could cry.
I like the idea of Reggie in the goal line package.
The moment he’s in there with PT or Bell, the defense really has NO idea where the ball is going. Add Shockey and Colston to the mix, it really keeps the defense on their toes. Having Bell in an I-formation at the goal line is not really a dead give away, but I think adding Bush in the mix does help to create some distractions for the defense.
We saw this once, but on OUR goal line with PT as the full back. I think a pro set would have worked better in that situation, but I’m glad to see some of that happening.
Thanks...
i just feel like too many people are on ends of the Bush feeling spectrum, either love him or hate him way too much. I like athletes that make our team better, and he is one of those athletes. I still somewhere inside me have hope that he will be an all-pro player. He definitely has the abilities just needs right opportunities and system to do it. His mentals is a big part of his game, he has a high football IQ. And why did he not play the second half today, he could’ve finally gone over the 100 yard mark, 6 rush for 83 yards. Great day for him, he could have had a 3rd TD if he recovered that Colston fumble.
Bush Coming along
At the start of this season I was pretty convinced that Bus was going to wind up somewhere in the AFC by the start of the 2010 season, and to be honest I was pretty ambivalent about the predicted move. Not that he has had any big break out games so far, but right now I see a great college player that is finally starting to geat a feel for playing running back in the NFL.
First by just lowering his head and getting the couple instead of running all over the field hoping for a home run.
Second by being very aware of first down markers and keeping his recieving routes just deep enough when he is the HOT read to move the chains. Then NOT running backwards when he gets the ball.
Third, I have watched him closely and started to see real improvements in his blocking and blitz pick up responsibilities. Which is normally considered the hardest thing for running backs to adjust too.
Overall I see a player that is starting to come along, albiet slower than we had all hoped. I am not sold that he ever will be a franchiese player, but if this current progress continues I think he earns a solid starting position on the team. Particularly since he is a very versitile player.
I can easily see a situation where Meecham, or Henderson goes down with a season ending injury and Bush rotates to playing more of a WR, or either Bell of Thomas get injured and he steps up his number of carries. In this way I can see a lot of value in a player that with one roster spot covers two key skill positions, even if he never reaches the level of production the starters would there.
