Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

What in the world is our starting defensive backfield now?

I can't keep track of who is injured, who's playing and who's not, let alone who's starting and who isn't.

Let's see...we've got Jenkins, McKenzie, and now McCauley healthy. Gay is still hurt (no?), and McAllister is gone. Porter and Greer are lucky not to be on IR. Torrance is on IR.

Am I forgetting anyone? Is this IT?

St. Rita of the Dome, pray for us fans now and at the hour of our playoffs...

Usama Young

put him in the mix at corner for sure.

That's true

So when we play our dime package, GW just says “All y’all get in there!”

Ten cents might be what our secondary is worth now. There’s only so much Sharper can do without good corners in front of him. Here’s what I hope:

Mike McKenzie shows that the Washington game—and not the Patriots game—was an aberration.

Malcolm Jenkins grows up in a hurry.

Marcus McCauley shows that he just needed a chance.

If these three things don’t happen…I don’t like to think about it. Drew, we need fiftyburgers! Extra mustard!

The story. He’ll be back for the playoffs.

Pierson Prioleau

He can move over the CB too. I think GW has always said he expects these backfield guys to be able to play CB, SS, or FS whenever needed. Still, things are looking mighty effed up back there right now. Gay was “limited” in practice today, so he’s probably ready to play again. It’s anyone’s guess as to how long he can play before re-injuring his hammy. It sucks that Greer will be out longer than expected. If we can’t get some sizable pressure from the D-line, we may make Chris Redman and Tony Romo look like Hall of Famers. I’m talkin’ ’bout you Charles Grant!

Huh? Wha?

Don’t expect Grant to hear you…he chews too loud.

3-4? Extra linebackers to drop in coverage or blitz? You’re right…last year we made some pretty bad quarterbacks look pretty good. I hope that’s not the direction we’re headed…although it might mean, in the long run, that we get to keep GW.

He's looking

for Drew’s in and out burger joint. Gonna eat all the burgers they got. ………..In 1 sitting.

this is a problem

id like to think greer will be back for the playoffs… the d line really needs to step up and get nasty.

Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather was asked, word for word, "What happened on the long touchdown?"

Said Meriweather: "Which long touchdown?"

Greer & Porter

You are right they should be on IR, remember Shockey’s injury last year? he was off all year even though he played through it. Greer will be rested and Porter hasn’t played in a month. These guys still need to heal and then get there legs back under them for a few weeks. They much needed BYE will be a blessing no doubt, but will these guys be up to game shape? What about the rest of the banged up DB’s we got back there?

by Saintsfan4life on Dec 10, 2009 3:41 PM CST reply actions

Porter and Greer

should both be back by our first playoff game after the Bye. Porter will probably be back in 2 weeks from n ow if they throw on an extra week for his knee to rehab to be safe. Still gives him two games to get back into it and a bye to rest the knee up for the final run. Such a big hit though…..They were the #1 tandem in the NFL for passes defensed and incompletions for receivers they covered before they went down….

Wow, I really didn't realize we were in this bad a situation

I think we should have held onto McAlister, even if it was only for a week or 2 – I mean I think Mc Kenzie is not even practicing because of a knee issue and U Young and Prileau playing CB- well I don’t know – that’s a little scary especially w/Fujita also out. I guess vs. Atlanta if Matt Ryan doesn’t play or is not 100%, but I sure would feel better w/ Mc Alister or some other healthy DB w/ experience. I know people said he was getting burned but he did good vs. NE, forced and recovered a fumble vs Skins and also defended a good pass vs DC (where he got flagged for a facemask- but he was right there in position). We need another top level CB for a few weeks or we need Mc Kenzie to play like he can play. Hopefully he will. Our nickel and dime is thin.

It's not looking good

I’m hopeful for Porter being back by playoffs and doubtful of Greer being back(and if he is, playing like his preinjury self). While I feel ok with MM and MJ as our starters till the playoffs, I can’t say the same about anyone behind them. We haven’t seen the new guy play, Gay might not be back(i still don’t feel too comfortable even if he is), and we have Prioleau and Young as depth. So, if Gay is still hurt and doesn’t play, that leaves us very very thin at CB. I like Prioleau as maybe the dime back but it’s bad if he’s the nickel. That’s if the new guy doesn’t learn the playbook in time. Not looking good. GW might need to take his foot off the pedal for a bit and play a bend but don’t break untill the redzone and hope we can force some turnovers from coverage. Maybe put Prioleau as a LB for coverage since Fujita is hurt and no one else has been impressive?

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

I was actually wondering

how many more mild injuries to corners before we see Roby or Meach pulling double-duty?

Ok just another dumb question

but lets just say Greer isn’t able to play until the very last playoff game is he allowed to play in the big one? Or the scenario not able to play at all but is ready for the big one is he eligible to play?

by N_O_1saintfan on Dec 11, 2009 7:37 AM CST reply actions

Yes, he could play

As long as they keep him on the 53 man roster and don’t place him on IR, he can suit up and play in any game at any time, including the Super Bowl.

I don't think you can just asssume Porter and Greer should be on IR

Shockey is a whole different body type and he’s older than Porter- his hernia could have been worse as well. Everyone’s different and everyone’s injury is unique. Porter and Greer may be in the situation that they only have to get through 3 games in the playoffs which would still be over a month from now and they don’t have to block huge defensive ends which is one of the things that would be very difficult with a sports hernia. I think the odds are they will be ok, but obviously we won’t know for several weeks. I think it’s great they have acquired some other CBs- just wish they had kep Mc Alister.

It's all a Payton smoke screen

I like to think that Payton is setting the rest of the league up by letting them think we’ll be weak and easily beatable in the playoffs due to many injured players. Then, once the first playoff game gets here, SURPRISE! Everyone is at full health and in total domination mode. I like to think that. I really do.
