My 2010 draft plan

In the first round, we draft a pass rusher.

In the second round, we draft a pass rusher.

In the third round, we draft a pass rusher.

In the fourth round, we draft a pass rusher.

In the sixth round, we draft a pass rusher.

And in the seventh round, we draft another #&$%@! pass rusher.

Then we load up on pass rushers in free agency.

This 2008 flashback routine is getting old.

Hmm ...

How about a pass rusher?

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

Boom! Rec'd it

I will be using this in the radio show…right now, in fact.

"Gowin on fourth and 14 will punt it away. He hangs it very high, angling it for the near sideline...HAKIM DROPS THE BALL!!! HAKIM DROPS THE BALL!! Brian Milne might've fallen on it at the ten yard line! It's the New Orleans Saints' football! Brian Milne, the most unlikely hero of them all, falls on the fumble, the muff by Hakim! There is a God after all!" -- Jim Henderson

I think that’s a TOUCH extreme. But I do think we need at least one good one. So we need to draft at least two or three.

I've been thinking about this.

How about we trade some guys for some pass rushers?

Did you notice that

Atlanta was in max protect all game. The routes for the backs were screens after check blocking.

Besides

What can you get with the 32nd pick?

As an example

…Jared Allen was picked in the fourth round.

I didn’t see the game, so I know very little in detail about what happened. But while max protect may frustrate a pass rush, it also puts less receivers into the routes downfield. We should have been able to deal with it. Instead, a crippled team nearly took the game from us.

There were more things that went wrong, of course; and anytime our defense holds the opposition to 23 points, we should win. But things have gotten just a little too tight lately. We seem to be back in 2008 mode…we’re just scoring better on offense. Sometimes. We probably should have scored at least 10 points over what we did.

Elvis Dumervil

also a 4th rounder, so there’s your #1 and #2 sack leaders in the NFL. Throw in an undrafted James Harrison at #4 on the list and you get a good idea of what talent is out there late in the draft if you have a good talent evaluator.

Spoken like a Fan who has never had that pick before

I don’t blame yall you are entering uncharted territority for a Saints fan many great things happen towards the end of the draft. Tom Brady pick 199, Joe Montana was a third rounder I believe, Drew Pearson of the cowboys wasn’t drafted bnack in the day when there was 15 rounds, Terell Davis was a Fifth rounder, Mike Webster was a fifth rounder, John Stallworth was a fourth rounder, Donnie Shell wasn’t taken in the ‘74 draft after 17 rounds and should be in the Hall of fame, Priest Holmes wasn’t drafted either so that should show you that talent can be had at any point during or after the draft

Players who should be in the Hall of Fame
DIck Lebeau, Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel and Chris Carter

the draft is a crapshoot

we’ll be lucky if we find a good pass rusher – LB, END or DT in the draft…

GUYS IT WAS A JOKE

Bart Starr was a 17th round pick. Johnny Unitas was cut by the Steelers. Colston was a seventh rounder. I can go on, but it is unnecessary. I know you can get something with the 32nd pick. I was just joking. Lighten up.

Generally speaking, I agree that the draft should be defensive heavy. I definitely won’t rule out a LT, though. I don’t see them re-signing Jammal Brown in the offseason, so that’s going to become a priority. Hopefully one we can address in free agency, as I doubt there will be anyone worthwhile at the position once we’re on the clock. If it hasn’t been addressed, we’ll have to go that route at some point. I also think we need a bulldozing RB — someone of the TJ Duckett variety — and a backup QB to groom behind Brees. Definitely not sold on Daniel over the long haul, though he’s better than thin air, which is what we currently have otherwise. Locking up Jahri Evans is something I wish they’d announce tomorrow. Of course, if I’m Evans, I’m in no rush to sign with an uncapped season looming and multi-millions to be had elsewhere.

Center is also a spot that could use an upgrade. Preferably one that can double as a LS. Or a LS with starting C potential. Whichever way you want to look at that. The bigger back can be a second FB, if need be.

Realism must step in

All the best pass rushers traditionally go in the first 20 picks. We will not have that high of a pick. The best you can get late is a tweener. A guy really not big enough to play end, but too big for a linebacker, like Jared Allen. Those guys you can get in the third or fourth round. Safeties usually drop to the later picks, as do centers and guards. A premium is on tackes, so guards can drop significantly. I would say a safety would be our best pick with our first, an outside linebacker, second and a de (pass rusher) in the third round. Then select by best available player.

Eric Norwood is currently at the top of my wishlist. Not sure if he’ll still be around that late in the first, but he very well may.

I say the Saints need to address the D-Line. C-wagon...

They still have the boys from WF they drafted in this years draft. A LB (Arnoux) and safety (Vaughn). I think the play of the safeties lately has been more a reflection of the injuries to the CB position. Less opportunities at freelancing. Not saying don’t address the LB but the more pressing concern to me is on the D-Line. Stuffing the run, keeping the LBs clean, and getting a consistent pass rush.

I wouldn't disagree by stealing it either though, you know...

by NOSFan4Life on Dec 13, 2009 7:19 PM CST reply actions

I disagree. They haven’t had a backfield disrupting OLB since Darion Conner. Don’t get me wrong, I hope Arnoux can return and make an impact on defense, but even if he does, that only brings us up to speed on one side. Both Fujita and Shanle have held down the mediocre fort for long enough. Fans clamor for an agressive defense. Well, you’re never going to truly get that without creating consistent pressure from multple positions. If Charles Grant isn’t the answer, then I have no problem giving McCray a shot at a starting gig or addressing that position in FA. Just get me a young OLB or two that are going to get after the QB. That’s what this defense sorely lacks.

“Stuffing the run, keeping the LBs clean, and getting a consistent pass rush.”

Keeping them clean for what? To miss open-field tackles and/or bring the RB down eight yards upfield? That’s all they’re doing now, with or without a DL pass rush.

Draft

Glad we are getting onto the draft conversations!!! The tail end of the 1st round always covers the cream of the College D draft class, most of the big name guys go at the back end of the draft. Simply because all the loosing teams want offensive firepower QB’s, O-Line, WR’s and RB’s, alot of good D players will be on the board.

I say we sign make a deal or sign Seymour I know he is about to be done in Oakland.

CP notice 4th sentence not disagreeing the need for LB just more pressing

concern to me is the D-Line. Waters also looked good at times during the preseason.

I agree that Waters might help fill the bill, if he sticks around. Big if there, as he didn’t make the final roster this season. I think Dunbar and Casillas COULD both be difference makers, too. I also think at some point, you have to ask yourself why weren’t these guys drafted to begin with and maybe start to look towards some bonafide Day One talent at the position. When you look at the guys we’re passed upon in recent years — Keith Rivers, Lawrence Timmons, Brian Cushing, Jon Beason, Derrick Johnson, Thomas Davis — just saying there aren’t too many of those guys I wouldn’t want on the team. Maybe not over the guy we selected at the time, but eventually if we want to take that next step towards all-around dominance, we’re going to have to bite the bullet and go out on a limb at that position. It’s definitely hit-or-miss (see Mark Fields vs Alvin Toles), but so is every position out there, to some degree (see Will Smith vs Charles Grant).

by coldpizza on Dec 13, 2009 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

Also, how much would a legitimate pass rushing OLB free up a DE lined up on the same side? That’s not a question we’ve had the personnel to answer since the late Mora, early Ditka era. I know the same can be said the other way, but at least we’ve seen Grant perform up to par and even excel at some points over the course of his career. We know that he wasn’t a total dud coming out of Georgia. He’s also still locked up under contract, so while I agree the need for improvement is there, I just don’t see it as pressing. Then again, if we’re picking 30th or whatever, we’re probably going to be relegated to BPA regardless, so this is more than likely a moot topic.

I agree who wouldn't love to see LB's with Pro-Bowl talent. And the moot point.

Much like the years of the Dome Patrol. But Chuckwagon is not earning his pay. And what was up with his mismatched shoes today or was that a tape job? LOL If it was whoever did it needs to remember sticky side should face the inside.

Just because every locker room could use more Van Halen

On a side note, unless Norwood has a monster combine he should still be out there at the #32 pick. Right now I think most scouts project him as a mid 2nd round pick.

He was benched at one point in favor of Kentrell Lockett because Hardy just didn’t show that he wanted the position bad enough.

all the difference

Safety play has been different since we lost Greer and Porter. No freelancing when you can’t trust the corners. I think Charles Grant is not 100%. He has not been playing like he did the first 6 games. He also looks overweight. And out short yardage rinning game is completely different without Heath Evans. He has been hurt so long that we forget he was a big part of why we had success in the first part of the season. When the post season starts, we will hopefully have our corners back, so safety play will be better, so turn overs will be a factor. And hopefully, we have our new fullback up to speed and our short yardage game will be back to where it was. Two areas will make all the difference.

both lines

obviously we should upgrade the d line, but i also think that we should target some good o linemen to make sure that we continue to keep drew clean for the next couple of years. especially if we dont resign jammal brown.

LINEMAN PLEASE!!!!

Agreed! Keeping Brees upright and clogging up the middle always gets my vote. DB’s, LB’s and the other skill positions are sexy, but all to often end in disappointment. I love an average lineman versus all the other glamour positions. What’s the worst that could happen he hangs around for a couple of years and gives us good depth? God forbid we end up with another Stinchcomb or Hargrove.

Yes, Linemen

proven to work, we lose Brown and O-Line has kept Brees healthy, thats all we can ask. Depth that can play all line positions.

Draft Moe Beer, please

LB’s like Pat Swilling come to mind, couple more CB’s wouldnt hurt since we go thru them pretty quickly, & of course 2-3 more receivers like the 1’s we got. Never know when 1 might go down, maybe we can get donte stalworth back? he was such a great 1st rounder. Geeesh, maybe we cud get russell erxleben again, wow what a draft pick that was.
OH, hell let’s dont forget da Coach’s greatest move of all time, trade the whole draft for ricky dicky willy & the dreadlockt pot smoker.
Wondern iffin maybe they read da fan’s post that year too? Apparently they havent listened last cuple years, since they have gotten some decent players for a change!!

I think we're going to have to see what's available

I’d like a player like Spikes from Florida or the LB from Alabama(can’t remember the name, starts with a M i believe) but will they be available that late? probably not. I’d like to see a good DT that’s good in pass rush taken first then maybe an OLB. I don’t know what we have in Arnoux really. Then a center. From there, well I’d have to see.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

by skinnykinney on Dec 16, 2009 2:54 PM CST reply actions

I’m pretty sure the lower draft order is based on the round of the playoffs in which you’re eliminated first, then overall record. So, even if the Saints lose their first playoff game (God forbid), the highest we can possibly draft is 25th. That would be if we finish behind the Colts, Vikings and Chargers (I think the Saints vs Chargers pick would be decided by a coin toss) and all four of us lost in the divisional round. That would put all three of them below us, the two conference champion losers and the two Super Bowl participants below us. So, anywhere from 25th to 32nd, as of now.

In all likelihood, the best will be 27th. I really don’t see Minnesota or San Diego catching us in the regular season.

Frankly, I think we will pick 31 or 32.

I would prefer 32. Then we could trade all our picks, like Ditka did and get your good defensive end. Or we could trade down like New England and stockpile middle picks and draft guys that can develop.
