IN DEFENSE OF OUR DEFENSE!!!

I know there is a lot of talk and concern about our defense, and clearly we miss Greer,Porter and Fujita.  But, I just had a great revelation!!!  We just faced 2 QBs the last 2 weeks that had career days against us.  And, they are both good QBs.  But, the thing that separates these two QBs from guys like Brees and Manning, is that they cannot do that every week or almost every week. But, make no mistake, they are capable as we have seen, of doing it on occasion.  So, instead of letting that scare us, we should gain confidence. Guys like Manning, Rivers, Romo, Mc Nabb, etc are not going to throw the ball BETTER than Redman or Campbell did- they threw the ball phenomenally. It was possibly the best day of their careers.  And, we took their best punch just like we would take anyone else's best punch- and we still won!  Peyton Manning would not have passed better than Redman did yesterday- he was phenomenal. It's as good as it gets.  And, when we get back to full strength and guys like Jenkins play later in the season and are better for all the experience, we will be even better.  We will be pressuring QBs better and we will be like early in the season.  But, we always take their best shot and find a way to win. It's not a fluke, it's for real.

I thought the same thing yesterday

and was going to post something like this…but then it occurred to me that there was one huge difference between a 67%, 300+ yard Chris Redman day and a 67%, 300+ yard Peyton Manning day: Manning would have had four TDs.

Same with Favre. Same with Warner. Same, possibly, with either Rodgers or McNabb.

Besides which, raw stats don’t tell the whole story. The Falcons’ two biggest targets—Gonzalez and White—were pretty quiet. Much of that yardage came off of dink-and-dunk type passing. Not the kind we really have to worry about overmuch.

The biggest reason we shouldn’t worry overmuch is that probably we’ll have Porter, Greer, and Fujita back for the playoffs. That means we have the same defense we started the year with. There is no team in this league that could have kept pace with us in the first half of the season…not even the Colts. I’m still optimistic.

Peyton Manning wouldn't have overthrown Jenkins wide open for TD down the middle

But i understand what your saying and as long as our offense can out score people we will be ok but boy do i miss our defensive starters

I do agree with all of ya'll

but that break away that Jenkins got was another broken coverage and even if he had made it and gotten the TD, it would not have changed the coarse of the game at the time. I have always felt that the Saints offense can score on anyone in less that 90 seconds and we still would have won the game.

we have faced some serious qb’s who havent had great days, and some crappy ones who have good days. the only thing that worried me about the def, was the lack of pressure on the qb. especially if we dont get some push up the middle when we are blitzing two cb’s. but most importantly, i am very impressed with the way that vilma stepped up and made two big plays at the end to shut the falcons down.

Payton Manning throws his share of picks

at least lately- some have even been pretty ugly. Favre throws picks and so does Warner (and Warner and Mc Nabb fumble also). I do agree though about the QB pressure, it’s a huge factor and it’s been lacking. But, I think GW will have a plan and some sacks this saturday vs Dallas. We need to get Grant out of there or move him to Tackle on passing downs. And when Fujita,Porter and Greer are back we will have more QB pressure. I also think all the others in the defensive backfield such as Jenkins, Prioleau, Young and Mc Kenzie will play better as they get more comfortable.

The Do-whatcha-gotta-do Defense

is what I ’ve been calling it, a “Team” Def. finds a way to make a play and end games. Saints D has been injured, but someone makes a play or the scheme itself helps 2nd teamers play well.

I posted this somewhere earlier...

But watch some highlights from earlier this season, defense was faster and more explosive. Look at how everyone was flying around and making plays. I think Vilma and Shanle are worn down and dinged. Ellis looks dinged and Grant may have an injury we don’t know about. The secondary looks tentative and slow and even Sharp actually had a bad game last week(Not just the long TD). They need rest. I think one nice BYE week will do it.

If thats the case

We have tampa coming up at home that would be a good week to rest players.
I like the idea of a perfect record but i really like the idea of a superbowl more

Problem is

unless Minnesota loses another game, we don’t clinch until we win 15. We may not be able to rest against Tampa.
