Anyone else besides me like the fake FG?
I liked the concept, just not the actual play. Payton said in the presser that he ran the fake because he trusted his D, but I think he ran it because he did not trust them. Now I am going to try to figure what Payton was thinking at the time...Payton is thinking----- "Damn what was Wendy's doing on that throw. Nevermind, next play, 4th down 7 to go. OK, whew. We can kick the FG and go up by 6, and force the 'Cons to score a TD... which they have a good chance to do judging from the way they have beaten our secondary and linebackers all day. Or go for that fake we have been working on all season. The Falcons sure won't expect a fake at this juncture and if we make the first down its game over and we can bask in the limelight of another W. Plus we can have some fun all week if Nicks catches a TD. But, even if we fail, I almost feel better having a 3 point lead, because if the 'Cons move into the red zone, they will likely get conservative and try to tie the game instead of trying to win it with a potentially risky endzone pass. Please God, let this work so I don't look like an idiot." Maybe I am giving Coach Payton too much cred, but I am sure some of these thoughts were going thru his head at that time.
As for the play itself, I thought it was not the best design. Notwithstanding, if the 'Cons hadn't reacted so well it would have likely worked and all youse guys and da' media would be labeling Payton as "genious" today. Dinkins was wide open briefly and if Brunell throws a strike, Dinkins can turn upfield and get the first down and the glory. But it was a low percentage play regardless. You have a backup QB who hasn't thrown a pass in a real game all season throwing to 2 guys not known for catching the ball. With only 7 yards for the first down and the win, I prefer a running play or quicker throw instead of sending a guy deep as the primary target.
Remember no coach is perfect. Coach Payton is apt to make a bonehead call every once in awhile. But I would still take him over any other coach in the NFL right now.

Payton has the balls
I like the call. I remember long time ago watching Mora punt it away on 4th down, thinking “Why not go for it? Take a chance once in a while will ya?” I like a coach that is willing to gamble sometimes. And with the Saints up only 3 the Falcons may have played soft/easy thinking “We only have to get into field goal range.” Instead of thinking “2 minute drill – Gotta score a touchdown. Balls to the wall time!”"
I have no problem with the call
It’s not like bellicheats 4th and 2 call I think he went for it knowing we could put the game away and our defense had been stopping the Falcons at that point so I dont think it was a panic call
It’s part of his aggressive offensive play calling mentality that makes the Saints what they are
Though i think if Hartley had made that extra point he would have kicked it to go up by 7
You are probably coreect about the extra point
However, I hated the call. Still do, It was an unnecessary risk at time when it wasn’t needed. Force the other team to score a td, not tie it with a field goal. I’m sorry but it was a bad call. No one is perfect, that includes Sean Payton. I love the guy, but sometimes I think he can get too cute and get too fancy. As much as I say he was perfect in the Washington and New England game as a coach and should be getting more consideration for coach of the year, I think the fake was a mistake, but what the heck we all make them.

Dumb call
If we kick the field goal, we force the Falcons to go for the TD. That’s much harder to do…and much easier to defend against. When you have to defend against a tying field goal, you can’t afford to trade yardage for time. Bend-but-don’t-break simply puts you into overtime.
Besides…as howarjo1943 himself points out, “it was a low percentage play regardless.”

Agreed
I would have definitely kicked the FG. Then again, I don’t even go for it when playing video games and nothing is on the line. It’s just in my blood to play the odds.

im horrible at kicking
in the latest madden that i own. i dont even attempt extra points and routinely kick out of bounds on kickoffs. it really is pathetic, but i dont have people come over to play me enough.

ok call
i thought that the play was ok, the falcons had it covered pretty well. but i thought that brunell needs to get that ball out faster and hit dinkins or nicks before the defenders catch up with them. dinkins would have been short by about a yard even if he got both feet in

Agree, Slow developing fake
never had a chance, once defenders recovered. So, that fake was going to Nicks in the end zone?! Wow?! Kick it.
You think you know, and you don't know, and you never, ever will.-Jim Mora Sr.
Should've just lined up the offense and went for it!
Would’ve had a better chance…

Yeah
So it’s the same old story, if we make it he’s a genius and if we miss….the situation made it very appropriate in my opinion…not much downside and BIG upside!

Why not just go for it on 4th down rather than going for the fake?
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
I'm with ACE
If you’re going to go for it, then why keep the best offense on the sideline in doing so.
Plus I like our chances on 4th and 7 a hell of a lot better than 4th and 1 or 2, as we’ve seen in the past. The farther away the better we are.

I liked the call based on the look that Atlanta gave us.
A field goal would have given a redhot Redman a shot at marching downfield and scoring the winning TD as time expires. QBs love it when they are forced to win games with TDs instead of FGs just ask Eli Manning after Super Bowl XLII.
Nicks was not the primary on the fake, DINKINS WAS ! Brunell should have thrown it earlier and let him fight for the yards. If it had worked Payton would be hailed by the nay-sayers and second-guessers as the messiah!
Sorry you're wrong.
When the fake started, I was yelling at the screen, what a dumb move it was. It was a mistake, three points forces a touchdown by the Falcons, making them more desperate and wreckless. It am second guessing or looking with hindsight. I sait it at the time and I say it now, it was the wrong move at the wrong time. It was not smart football. I love Sean Payton, but sometimes he gets too wreckless and ambitious.

SP is crazy like a fox.
In the rest of our games this is just something else the opposition’s defensive coach will have rolling around in his battered brain, “Is he crazy enough to pull another stunt out of his butt?”
Answer: Yep.

"too wreck less and ambitious"
I guess it’s in us as fans to second guess everything that the pros do. I keep coming back to the Saints being just the 7th team in the history of the league to go 13-0…how can I complain about what the coaches are doing? But that’s just me. These guys get paid the big bucks for a reason.
But calling our young coach who’s leading this team in the direction of greatness, “too wreck less and ambitious…?” I don’t know about wreck less and I certainly never would use “ambitious” in a negative way. His personality is what makes him one of the best offensive minds in football. The call showed which team was actually under more pressure that day. It certainly wasn’t the Saints. Look how things went once the score was tied. The Saints turned around and scored; the Falcons turned over on a pick, and on downs. The team is playing loose despite being undefeated, and it shows with these last two wins.
Keep drawing ’em up Sean.
After getting to watc the game (sigh)
I am more convinced that anybody who thinks the risk Coach Payton took was 3 points or a game is out of their minds. This guy is a master, not only of the game, but of motivation, and people. I really love watching true genius at work.
