I think Gregg Williams may be the problem right now
In compensating for the injuries his defense has suffered, I think Gregg Williams is trying to do too much on defense. I think we are blitzing too much and not trusting max coverage enough. I remember in the New England game when a lot time we would rush three and cover with eight, we haven't done much of that lately.
I thought year before last, Sean Payton was listening to his press too much and was trying too hard on offense. I thought he was trying to get too creative. This year I think Gregg Williams is doing the same thing.
Gregg needs to step back and analyze what he is doing and see if he needs to tone it down a bit. He is a great coach and is doing more with less than anyone I have ever seen. Let's face it we do not have the talent on defense that we have on offense. Darren Sharper is maybe the best free safety in football right now, but he is not a corner and asking him to cover a speed receiver one-on-one is a lot.
I love Gregg Williams and want him as our coodinator, but he is trying too hard.

im sure that
the play when we blitzed two cb’s and they beat sharper for a td is exactly what is on your mind. i think the main problem with that particular play is that our “chuckie blitz”, as the announcers called it, produced no pressure on the qb. they picked up the blitz perfectly and were able to exploit our safety playing man with no over the top help. ask drew, he dreams of those situations.

G W is a great defensive guy but...
he needs the right people in place to do the things he wants. Before I go any further I don’t want to sound lke this is the worst thing in the world but you asked and this is my take. He seems to still be calling the game like everyone in there is a starter. Troy Evans is a good player but he is not a good as Fujita. The backups seem to be out of place, loosing contain on the backside and the inexperience shows. The D line is not getting the pressure needed to help our banged up secondary so he is sending vlites that leave our secondary open. Fuijita is out and the backups are not filling that void, that’s why they are backups. Once the playoffs start and we can get the pieces back in place we will be fine. At this point I don’t really care about going undefeated. Again don’t get me wrong it would be awesome to do that but, let’s get the Lombardi Trophy where it has never been (in Metairie).
"I don’t think about how good we’ve been,’’ Brees said. "I think about how good we can be.’’
“let’s get the Lombardi Trophy where it has never been (in Metairie).”
Technically speaking, I’m sure it has at least passed through Metairie on several occasions. Specifically, from the Superdome and/or Tulane Stadium to the airport, following Super Bowl victories by various other teams.

The key word here
is “trying.” He tried out a lot of things against the Falcons, and they didn’t work too well. If he sticks with that against the Cowboys, I’d be concerned. But I think the main problem right now is the lack of a good strong-side defensive end. Charles Grant has eaten his way off the team, in my opinion. McCray hasn’t performed up to expectations. I’d like to see Hargrove shifted over, Ayodele and Ellis in the middle, and Will Smith finally cut loose from all the extra attention he gets. I would bet the house (well, almost) that this lineup would work much better than one with Grant in the game.

A few games ago I was worried GW would be
a head coach somewhere else next year. I think that 1) he’s obviously pretty great 2) blitzing leaves you open to the big play, as we have seen, but who wouldn’t have the plan to blitz Atlanta after the prior week?, 3) getting our starting corners back will totally change the complexion of the defense, again, and 4) I think our defense has been just questionable enough that GW is still here next year.
Who should we execute first? (How about Tony Romo?)

I forget the coaches name:
When asked in a post (loss) game interview, “What do you think of your team’s execution?”
His answer, “I’m for it.”
First one to post that coaches name get’s a rec!

Keep in mind that the Jaguars DID digress statistically under Williams prior to his coming here. They went from 12th to 17th overall in yards given up and 10th to 21st in points surrendered. Not saying he hasn’t bettered this squad in some respects, but it’s not like EVERYTHING the guy has touched has turned to gold throughout his days as a DC.

I think right
now its just he’s trying to find the right schemes to use with the personell he’s had for the last few game to see which ones work the best. Its obvious that some of the blitz packages don’t work because the personell we have on the field at this time can’t execute them the way they need too. Not taking any thing away from our players because I think they all have talent but some are more talented than others when it comes to specific schemes and coverages. For instance you can use every blitz in the book and be effective when Porter and Greer are at the corner because they can stay with their man and they will always have Harper and Sharper to drop down and help like we saw in the first 6 or 7 weeks. McKenzie, Gay, and Jenkins can be trusted in zone coverages because they don’t have to worry about one specific person just the area they are assigned to like we saw in the Patiots game. Once we have the starting corners back I think we go back to being normal.
But GW is just feeling out what schemes work in my opinion. I just hope that now that he sees that the schemes he was throwing out the last 2 games don’t work with a developing rookie (Jenkins), a vet thats trying to get back to his regular form (McKenzie), and a corner with limited skill sets (Gay). They can’t play man to man plain and simple. the zone coverages that he pulled out in the Patriots game are best suited for the current secondary and I think (hope) that he will go back to them for the Dallas game.
Get ready to FEEL DAT BREES!!!

I'm a little disappointed
I see a 13 – 0 record and I am happy. I look at the remaining schedule and I see probably a 16 – 0 season. However, I don’t see the Superbowl with the defense playing the way it is. I see a defense that made two average quarterbacks look like Peyton Manning. I see a soft middle and poor angles being taken at the ends. I see little to no pass rush and I have to ask myself, even if we get all our players back for the playoffs, will it be enough? I also have to ask myself, what if we have to go into the playoffs with the guys we have, can we even slow down the Eagles or the Vikings? You can call me fanalyst, fatalist or pessimist, but as far as I’m concern, if we miss the Superbowl this year, then we had a failed season. This team deserves a Super Bowl and the Saints fans deserve more.

Nope !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your making too much of it. Different teams bring different schemes and he’s doing it with second and third team players.
trying to do alot of things
i think we blitzed too much. The players also played sloppy taking poor angles and on the play where Sharper got burned, he was running forward when the ball got snapped. Poor timing there, imo because no one is goign to be able to run forward then turn around and catch up with someone. I think he needs to tone down a bit though. We’re playing alot of 2nd string players and it’s showing. Other teams know that and are attacking it. I think we can get alot better with our 2nd string but some of it is the players messing up and some of it is the playcalling. I’m not too worried yet.
Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
Many people are saying
The Eagles or the Vikings could take the Saints in shootout, because of our defesive problems. To deny there is a problem is to blind to the facts. Look at this item http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/20091215_Ashley_Fox___Eagles_can_beat_the_Saints.html

I, like some of my brethren, do not deny there is a problem. I just choose to concentrate on the positive.

They're at least as blind as anyone else with those articles...
…they totally discount the fact that Jabari Greer, Tracy Porter, and Scott Fujita have been out for those games.
Get the Saints D back to 100% (which is expected for the playoffs), and all those issues vanish…
I say let ’em dream while they can.

Thats local Fan talk
Hell, Dallas is talking about how they have figgered out how to stop the Saints. The way I see it all 13 teams had us figgered out and look what happened.
the blitzes...
are not getting to the QB fast enough anymore. That be the prblem right there.
I honestly don't see the problem. You don't rev your engine up to 5,000 unless you've
got a hill to climb. Redskins?? Falcons??
Redskins is the most worrisome, if you don’t take into account the fact that there was time to beat them, still (remember Miami??!?), even WITH a field goal!
WHODAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are undefeated
1) I agree that Charles Grant is a problem
2) If aggressiveness is your theme, then be aggressive. It’s a frame of mind. Pressure the QB with whoever you have
mix it up, but pressure. That’s hoe you get turnovers
3) We have done fine and will do better with the return of Fujita, Greer, and Porter
4) The players that have filled in need to play the same aggressive mode as the starters. It will pay off in the end. You
don’t want them playing one way and the strarters playing differently
5) If it aint broke, don’t fix it.
6) The Eagles could never beat the Saints- The Gianst torched the Eagles for over 500 yds and only lost because of
bad punt coverage and a couple of weird fumbles (Jacobs and Manning’s non slide)
7) The Eagles may not even make the playoffs
8) We beat everybody else, what makes you think we can’t beat the Vikings who already have 2 losses and may have more
9) Do you really think another team can come into OUR DOME and beat us?? Sheeeeez

I gotta say an interesting post would be to vote for
which team we, each, don’t want to see in the playoffs.
WHODAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with M-E about the defensive line changes
and I think you will see them. Probably this week. Ia lso think you will see some Pressley in the mix. I think it has become apparent to everyone Grant is playing poorly. I think Gw wanted to give him multiple chance and he’s been very generous, but it might be past the breaking point.
But, I think everyone is overly concerned. Like I said in another post
1) we held Atlanta to 80 yds rushing
2) held Gonzalez to 50 ds
3) held Jenkins, White and Finneran to 7 total catches.
that’s pretty good stats for a banged up defense. 23 points given up isn’t all that bad- you would think anytime we only give up 23 ponts we should win- our offenes is averaging in the high 30s. Take away the 1 long td pass play and everything would look very different.

If you look at it, the biggest change in the scores is the dropoff on offensive side 33&26.
I sure hope I don’t hear complaints about the offense, now. I think they’re just saving their bullets for where they count. If not, we are lost.
19-0
WHODAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first time
GW misses a tackle, I might agree with you.
by KilnBill on Dec 15, 2009 6:53 PM CST reply actions 1 recs
He doesn't make the tackles
But he calls the defenses that put the players in position to make the tackles. All I said was that he may be getting to fancy in his play calling and needs to get more conservative until he has the personnel he needs to get fancy again. We blew a 14 point lead in the second half that hasn’t happen to the Saints at all this season. We won, but only because our best defensive took the game into his own hands.
I am not saying our defense stinks, like a different post intimated. I am not saying that injuries haven’t been the cause. I am saying that the defense needs to play within the constraints of the personnel it has until such time the personnel that is injured returns.
I am not Cock Robin. The Dome is not falling. I am saying Philadelphia and Minnesota are a better team. However, I am not Polyanna either and I don’t want to get into a track meet with either of those teams, because luck plays too big of a role in a track meet.
I remember when Sean Payton got too cute and too fancy with his play calling. He even admitted it. I just see a trend and would like that trend to end.
