Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

I think DeShazier nails it

"New Orleans Saints owe it to themselves to chase history" says the headline, and DeShazier explains exactly why the Saints ought to try as hard as they can for perfection--not for the city, not for the fans, but for themselves. I couldn't say it any better, so I'll let him say it:

You think Saints players and coaches went through months of offseason preparation in order to dial back now that there's a chance - a really, really good chance - to win every regular-season game? Think players and coaches don't recognize the significance of what they're doing? Not for the fans, though the support system is an extremely important component, but for themselves?

The truth is, the Saints would be cheating themselves, more than anyone, if they don't floor it in the last three games. The reality is, players and coaches would be going against almost every tenet they preach or have been forced to listen to, if they decide playing it safe is the honorable route.

Physically and mentally, Saints players have been conditioned to have a killer instinct, to win.

They've so closely identified with their motto - "Finish" - that the word is bound to pop up in any random conversation with any player. And the only way to "Finish" the season is to treat the end the same as the beginning.

Did you see that, supposedly, Payton stated that it is a 'team decision'?

I think that pretty much tells all, if true. What player would back down from a perfect season?

I think they should go for it and want to see them try, but...
The reality is, players and coaches would be going against almost every tenet they preach or have been forced to listen to, if they decide playing it safe is the honorable route.

I don’t think this is true. They have been preaching winning the Super Bowl. That has always been the number one goal. When they were in training camp, they weren’t saying “Our main goal is to win every single regular season game.” I guarantee if Payton and Co. had a crystal ball and knew that resting their starters would guarantee them a Super Bowl victory, they would do it.

i think

deshazier and i agree that the best way to accomplish that goal is to play the way that they have been playing all year, which is extremely aggressive on both sides of the ball.

not to mention, the one team that has routinely been put in this situation has always rested their players, will do so again, and even make statements like “resting players has worked in the past for us”. when every shred of evidence suggests that they come out flat and soft in the playoffs after dominating the regular season.

"I was so excited because I thought I was going to be the hero,’’ Nicks said, smiling. "I knew exactly what I was going to do - I was going to jump from the 6-yard line like Reggie (Bush).’’

Well

the Colts coach says that they will play all the healthy starters for the game against the Jags. But I noticed he only said the Jags game not the rest of the season. They are going to rest their players at least for the last 2 games I’m sure. I hope it works out for them so we can make history by not only having 2 unbeaten teams in the SB but have the hometown hero against the hometown team. That would be a great game. And I bet you their would be AT LEAST 60 points scored by both teams combined. but of course we would come out on top. LOL.

Yes but...

They have been preaching winning the Super Bowl by preparing for and beating each team one game at a time, without letting up for suspected weaker teams or backing off but trying to be the best we can each week. That’s not only how you win a Super Bowl, it’s how you go undefeated and much more importantly it’s how you build a winning/championship organization year after year!

I know of a Saintsational who masters this domain…

Don't change whats working

pulling guys w/ big leads is fine but not starting starters is taking guys away from their comfort level. A Racehorse has to be on its toes to win, not sleep walking to the track.

Colts...Colts....Colts....

That’s why we are going to thrash them in the Super Bowl…we are like Gladiators…we cannot consider the possibility of losing, ever….ever….that’s the mindset!

How do you

work your ass off every week since July and then all of a sudden………………..Throw an game to be better prepared to make a run at a Super Bowl ?
I do not see how that could possibly help get your mind right to play better football in the post season. Hell, a loss during the regular season does not guarantee a Super Bowl win !! And, winning all your games does not guarantee a Super Bowl win but I feel winning breeds winning and thats the way it is suppose to be. Now, I think if you win out and get the big head (New England, Indianapolis) and get to thinking your better than everybody else is the prime set up to fail. I dont see the Saints getting vain (Yet). I see a team that is focused and playing one game at a time with their focus on wins and the rest will take care of itself

by saint-sly on Dec 15, 2009 3:46 PM CST reply actions

No one is going to try to lose

but the question will always be, should the starters try to win or let the 2nd string have a shot? The players will always play as hard as they can to win I believe. So will the coaches. It’s their job to help the team win and if you’re taking games off, you get cut(from the team’s roster not literally like your teammates cut your finger off although that could happen). Dave, I disagree with you to some extent about "Our main goal is to win every single regular season game." I think, in the regular season, it is. The ultimate goal is of course to win a SB but the best way to get there, is winning every single game. So, to some extent, the main goal is to win every game you play, including the regular season. If you never lose a game in a season, you win a SB.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

geez, the more you think about it, can you imagine??!?!

Being a fierce competitor and watching your team lose a game??!?! I’d have a hard time with that. I guess I could live with it, but… The only thing worse would be to go onto the field being told to throw the game! I’ll betcha, right now, with the Colts and a new coach that Peyton’s beggin’ him. Payoda strikes again, “let the players decide”.

"You play to win the game"

Don’t change a thing.
If a player is hurt, then rest that player.
If we are winning a game in a blowout, take out the starters.
Otherwise keep the mojo flowing and continue the same strategy that got us to 13-0.
We’ve already secured a first round bye to rest players before the playoffs. Let’em chase history—they’ve earned it.
You wouldn’t pull a pitcher in the midst of a perfect game in the 9th inning just because he might injure his arm and the team has already secured a playoff spot. Why stop the Saints from going 19-0?

There is no honor in retreat

Play all who are healthy until a winning lead is established. What honor is there in holding back? Is it not better to go down fighting then be beaten while hoding back. General Patton always advocated pushing forward an keeping the pressure on the ememy. He also did not sit back and watch his troops, he led them whenever he could. Do you think that General Brees wants to watch the battle from the sidelines? Or Majors Colston, Henderson and Meachem want to watch. What about Captains Bell, Thomas and Bush… get the point. Allow those who are healthy the opportunity to fulfill their glorious destiny on the field. If they go down, then the go down in action. Who Dat !!
