THe Historic Value of Perfection

I personally have always proclaimed that winning a Super Bowl is indeed the ultimate achievement and goal for any NFL team. I would argue that the regular season record means nothing except it has to be good enough to get into the playoffs, and that those last 3 or 4 games are all that matter. I will still be happier than pickled pig snouts if the Saints lose the next 3 games, so long as they win the last 3, but my view of what it means to win a SB versus attaining a perfect regular season and winning it all has begun to shift.

43 previous teams have been crowned SB Champs. But only 1 team has ever finished the year undefeated, and we still talk about them over 30 years later. The Giants fame from 07 isn't for winning the SB for themselves, but for beating the Patriots and taking the prize of perfection and history away from them.

It is clear the players and most likely the coaches want to play this full on, and "finish" with an unblemished record. If the mark improves to 14-0 it would only be the 4th ever, so this years Colts, the Patriots of 07, and the 72 Dolphins. So I have to give great praise to the Organization, Players, coaches, staff etc, for what is being accomplished, and now I may have a nagging sense that injuries are piling up, the team is getting fatiged, the Defensive scoring has tapered off, but I have such an excitement for what could be, that I now argue in any way I can that the mix of emotions and ritual are better left undisturbed, and if the ultimate dream is realized that it would last forever in the history of the NFL. And as Saints fans we ought to be used to thinking about the "what could be's". instead of what miracle it may take to get the last wild card, its just a different miracle that we may well witness.
