SAINTS JUST SIGNED TE TORY HUMPHREY

Saints just signed  new TE that was on the Green Bay roster as injured reserve(?) and was undrafted free agent with Indianapolis in 2005. Apparently he has started 7 games previously. Saints put Marcus Mallei on IR with a hamstring injury. I guess they are trying to free up Dave Thomas to play FB if Shockey needs more time.  Makes me wonder how hurt the guy going to IR was, but I don't really know the rules in regard to that. I'll try to provide the link, but if anyone knows how a player such as Humphrey can go on IR in preseason and then be on an active roster later in the season, please let me know how that works.   The link is from the Saints Official website.

Humphrey wasn’t on Green Bay’s IR, he was waived/injured after reaching a settlement with the team. As a vested veteran, this option allows the 2009 season to count towards his pension while still being able to explore opportunities with other teams when fully healthy. It’s basically the same thing as if Green Bay had placed them on their IR, only he’s an UFA. His agent probably felt as if he had a shot of recovering in time and worked out a lump sum loophole with the Packers for considerably less than they would have paid him in base salary.

To clarify, he was on the NFL’s free agent IR. It’s strictly a status designation. These players aren’t truly being reserved for anyone.

oh, OK I see

can a player be put on injured reserve when he’s only mildly injured? Are there any strict criteria, ie. Mailei, where you just go along to be on IR because you are not what the team was really looking for or the team’s plans changed?

Yes. In fact, that’s what happened with Chip Vaughn in the beginning of the year. I remember he was a bit vocal about being put on IR, because he feel as if it was that serious of an injury to miss an entire season because of. I’m sure that personnel decision had a lot to do with the fact that he wasn’t going to crack the final roster otherwise, so they stashed him. Obviously, they’re weren’t about to waive him or settle with him, because they think he has a future with the organization. Also, Sharper and Prioleau only signed one year deals, so I’m sure they’re viewing it as an insurance policy of sorts. Vaughn hasn’t been in the league long enough to have any rights, so he bites the redshirt bullet. I’m sure that sorta thing happens all the time, you just don’t hear about it.

The downside of IR is you still have to pay the player his base contract, or at least a percentage of it. Not crystal clear on how all that works, I just know that they still count towards the cap in some capacity.
