It Just Kills Me

I guess I am hypersensitive because I reside in an area far away from NOLA and have to listen to the fans and talk of the Philadelphia Eagles, but I just have to vent at the hypocrisy of things. Until the Saints beat the Patriots (and even after), many would say that the Saints haven't beat any team that is good. Even though we played some teams who were undefeated at the time, we really weren't " validated " until the Patriots game.  Even now there are doubters.  But, the Eagles are the new team to get a lot of attention because of their winning streak and playoff berth and possibility of winning their division.  Well, the Eagles have not beaten a team that is going to the playoffs this entire year!! And no one seems to notice this. Unless you count the Giants who are very doubtful.  The only playoff caliber teams they have played have been losses (New Orleans, San Diego, and Dallas).  These three teams are the only teams that had top level QBs who were playing well at the time (sorry, Cutler, Stafford, DelHomme, etc don't qualify).  And they lost badly to the Raiders, but now they get all the attention.  Well, one nice thing about the NFL is that there are no imposters when it's all over.  The Eagles play a desperate Broncos team with a return of Brian Dawkins to Phila, and then the Cowboys in Dallas.  If they win bith of those games, I will tip my hat to them.  If they lose, I will say I saw it coming.

Nobody said you have to know football to be a fan! I love Brees as much as the next person, but non-fans will always say that stuff until he has a Superbowl ring to validate it. The championship validates the TEAM not Brees. We went 8-8 and Brees missed the record by 15 yards, but we couldn’t make the playoffs. Yet Rothlisberger is considered ‘elite’ cause he made a good play. Doesn’t sound like the people you’re listening to understand respect, just bragging rights. Cheer up! By the end of this year, the Saints will have their rings, but the Eagles won’t.

The Eagles have been to the NFC championship game several times under Reid and McNabb, as well as the Super Bowl once. They’re also from a much larger market. I know that doesn’t matter a hill of beans to what’s transpiring this season, but it definitely plays a factor in general fan biases and/or media perception. The Saints will always be a small market team. There’s no getting around the demographics of the region. The only thing they can control is winning consistently … establishing that aura of eliteness that comes with multiple trips to the top of the playoff mountain. They still have their training wheels on, when it comes to all that.

That’s not to say I view the Eagles as an elite team, by any means. Just that they’re perennially closer to that light than my favorite team is.

Good Post

I listened to Peter King on NFL Radio this AM and feel the same way about it all. He’s one of the many that have been waiting 15 weeks to throw the Saints off the elite train. He dropped them to 3rd on his power rankings, and wrote in his MMQB Tuesday Edition that they aren’t Super Bowl caliber. All that because of one loss. On top of that he has Philip Rivers ahead of Brees in his MVP race. This coming from the guy that had the Saints finishing 7-9 this year.

As frustrating as it is, guys like Peter King get paid to report on the past and formulate their opinions based on that. It doesn’t make them experts…just writers. Living in New England and despite seeing the drop off the Pats have experienced, they are still a more dangerous team than Dallas will ever be, and we managed to gain their respect. I’ll take that over that of Peter King and his pundit bretheren.

To draw an analogy here, suppose two men die in their sleep. One is 87 years old with a history of medical conditions. The other is a relatively fit 26 year old in good health. Which gentleman do you think will inevitably receive the more complete autopsy? I’d be willing to bet that the old man’s death is blamed on the very first thing the coroner comes across. The young fellow, on the other hand, is going to be dissected to smithereens, until there isn’t a smidgen of doubt left what caused him to pass. And why is that? Because 87 year old men are common place in a morgue. It’s what the coroner is used to seeing, so he’s not going to be nearly as diligent in his efforts to find a reason for failure. Failure being death, in this case. 26 year olds rarely die in their sleep. The less seldomly dealt with case will undoubtedly raise more questions. Beg for further scrutiny. Coroners are paid to dig for flaws, just like sportswriters are. The human nature elements of the two are also quite similiar. Do you see the parallel there?

So

I’m only 52. What does he do with me? My uncle told his doctor that when he died ,he wanted someone to shove a hambone up his a$$, and let the dog drag him to places he’d never been.

I guess - so the Eagles are the 97 year old guy, so to speak??

also- isn’t it surprising to all of you, without doing the research, to find out the Eagles haven’t beaten a conending team but still are talked about in higher terms than say Dallas, Arizona or Green Bay? Unless you already knew that they had only beaten weak teams, then there would be no surprise.

Correct. They’re in the playoffs (morgue) more often, so the coroner (media) doesn’t poke and prod quite as much as they do when they see the Saints (young guy) there.

Guys

you gotta realize that this is a “what have you done for me lately” league. The Eagles seem to be “hot” and the flavor of the month. The Cowboys apparently are the superbowl favorite after beating us too.

Now that we lost, our season is supposedly over, well thats what Fran Tarkenton said on Monday.

by touchdown my pants on Dec 23, 2009 10:40 AM CST reply actions

yes, the formula for superbowl picks as per the "informed" media

is that the #1 teams with the best records rarely make the super bowl, much less win it.

So, they have to search the second tier for “hot” teams on winning streaks, or consistently good teams that will make the playoffs to fill their revised super bowl brackets…

it’s a bunch of poop and doodoo if you ask me. No one knows. I just want and wish and hope for it to be our beloved Saints winning all the playoff games…

the main difference between the eagles and cowboys and us

is that we dont need five incredible games in a row to make the superbowl. we just need two good games… i like our chances against them.

I like the fact that we should be able

(without taking any team such as Tampa and Carolina lightly) to avoid bloodbaths the next two weeks and then have 2 weeks of rest. I really think the key is to win vs Tampa and then rest players vs Carolina. Meanwhile, Minnesota, Dallas, Green Bay Phila and Arizona will be getting beat up ( and the Giants) in dogfights where they can’t afford to let up.
