injury report today at 2:13pm:
Cornerback Usama Young missed practice with both hip and abdomen injuries.
And then 2 hours later the team had to admit to the surgery, probably after a reporter (NOT Jeff Duncan, he is a BEAT WRITER, get it straight, people) asked about it because of word on the street.

Jeeeez, it's starting to sound like a sports hernia is viral!!!
“Actually” a sports hernia a weakening of the muscles of the abdominal wall. Much like a couch potato hernia, which is a weakening of the muscles of the gluteus maximus wall. For the latter, donut pillows are prescribed.
Fat, dumb, and happy. Hell, two out of three ain't bad!

weakening of the muscles of the abdominal wall.
I have that, except it’s called a gut.
Need more specifics. From what I read, it involves connective tissue and the pubic bone. Ouch.

It used to be a "groin pull"
Duncan said in his vlog that there have been 6 Saints undergo sports hernia surgery in the last 15 months, and that Payton said this type of injury was often misdiagnosed as a pulled groin muscle but modern medical technology allows for a more specific diagnosis.
Best way to heal it is with rest. Who has time for that? With a quick surgery, you can be back and going sooner than sitting around waiting for it to heal and you’ll probably aggravate it again in the meantime anyway.

I wonder if the artificial turf that the Saints play on
in the dome and also in Atlanta and a few other venues contributes to this problem with all sorts of injuries. It seemed like in the 90’s there was a lot of talk about this. I know some teams such as the Eagles have opted for a natural surface after having the opinion ( or research) that their playing surface was contributing to injuries. But, it seemed like the common wisdom several years ago was that natural turf was softer and more giving and as such less likely to contribute to injuries. Lately you don’t hear much about this issue. I think the synthetic surfaces have improved, but I still don’t think they can’t really compare with natural grass. The Saints probably play and average of 10-12 games a year on synthetic turf.
