I think we should have never released Carney

one reason- we were undefeated now we are 0-2. It doesn’t matter how many kicks a kicker makes. The only thing that matters is how many games a team wins when a kicker is on that team.

That’s a ridiculous statement. Every player should be evaluated based on their individual performance, not the team’s as a whole. That was Hartley’s first professional miss inside of 50 yards. He’s can still miss two more and still not be the liability Carney’s been this season.

If you want to point the blame at someone, how about the offense for executing a 25 second three-and-out at the end of the first half, allowing the Bucs FG that made the Hartley attempt necessary. Or the defense that gives up a 4 minute, 98 yard TD drive to one of the worst offenses in all of football. If time of possession was something the Saints could wrap their collective heads around, we’d be singing the praises of Charles Grant right now, not nitpicking over a player who’s already pulled our asses out of the fire once this season.

Don’t get me wrong, if Hartley’s miss turns into another Chip Lohmiller/Olindo Mare fiasco, I’ll be calling for his head, too. I just think that’s a little premature, given the circumstances surrounding this team effort embarrassment.

agreed

There are larger issues other than the missed FG. How about the poor punt coverage that allowed the 77 yard return? How about the rush defense failing once we got into OT? How about the offense suddenly being average (at best)?

After the Falcons game, I just felt as though this team was playing down to their competition, but after these last two games I think everyone that was questioning what was then a 13-0 team were very much justified. This team is in a lot of trouble. Not only do they stand a pretty good chance of losing the #1 seed, they won’t get through the first round of the playoffs the way they are playing right now.

On top of which, Carney’s still a member of the Saints. He was retained as a consultant. Not like we can’t bring him — or Jason Elam, or any other social security eligible kicker — back, if need be.

This question is unfair

Because we don’t know for sure what the problem with the kicking game is. It’s a little suspicious that two kickers who were usually reliable (granted Hartley has a short history) suddenly became unreliable when we change both snapper and holder.

I have no idea if Carney would have made that kick, and neither does anyone else. I voted “no” in support of Hartley, before I realized that meant I was dissing Carney.

Fate coming back to bite us in the a$$

Look we won 2 games because of easy feild goals that were missed. Now it’s our turn to miss an easy one. Hartley is still what 19 of 21 on feild goals. He’s a good young kicker. the snap didn’t look too good to me.

Experience counts.

Carney is a 19-year veteran, Hartley is inexperienced. Why don’t the Saints tell Hartley to take a hike and get a more experienced kicker to fill in for Carney?

If it’s only about winning, Hartley was on the team for all 13 wins, also.

you're right that stats mean nothing

it’s about the wins and the SB. Doesn’t matter if a kicker has made 0 FGs out of 20 tries either as long as we keep winning with him as our kicker though right? I agree that stats don’t mean much especially compared to winning but they do hold a bearing on whether we win or not. If we’re the #32 offense and #32 defense, we can still win any given game but we won’t win more than we lose over a course of a season like that. Hartley hasn’t missed a FG before that game. I don’t think that Hartley’s “inexperience” lost us that game. Hartley’s been kicking FGs for a long time. Carney was a liability because in that same situation, i think Payton would feel more comfortable throwing a hail mary than letting him kick anything over 35 yards. Never should’ve even been that close. Our guys didn’t show up for the 2nd half except for a few plays.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

Did you forget

Carny missed a extra point to tie to win the game in 04, remember that game the Saints ran the hook and latter and Carney missed the Extra point
Thats not the point the Saints made the Bucs look better than The Dallas Cowboys
By the way the Cowboys shut out the Redskins last night the Saints lost to a 2 -11 team make all the excuses you want if they play like this in the playoffs they will be out the first game
Superbowl tickets start at $2500.00 a piece, Tom Benson will buy Brees ticket so he can have the feeling

it is my understanding that NFL rules would not allow Carney to come back on the active roster.
