Saints Playoff Scenarios

Again, I'm sure most of you are aware of the situation but in case you aren't, here is the playoff situation for the Saints, courtesy of the NFL:

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

New Orleans clinches homefield advantage throughout NFC playoffs with:

IF MINNESOTA BEATS CHICAGO

   1) NO win or tie OR

   2) MIN loss or tie

IF CHICAGO BEATS MINNESOTA

  • New Orleans clinches homefield advantage.
  • To sum it up, if the Vikings lose tonight the NFC Championship game goes through New Orleans (should the Saints make it). If the Vikings win, the Saints must win/tie against Carolina to clinch home field advantage throughout.

Since so much of this hinges on the Vikings, there will be an open thread for the Vikings/Bears game tonight right here on Da Chronic for all of those who will be watching and want to talk about the game.

    If we don't beat Carolina

I don’t care. I’m tired of backing into the playoffs. I won’t be on board again until we beat carolina and also win our first playoff game. I’m angry, Saints. ANGRY!

    Semantics

But my idea of backing in to the playoffs means losing but still clenching a spot.

We clinched when we beat the Pats I think...

I don’t want to see anyone else on the Saints get hurt. The injuries are a big problem. But we have to get on track somehow. We have to play hard and win. We have to play all four quarters. The only player who really hasn’t been awful is Brees. And that doesn’t mean he has no room to improve. We have to make the superbowl this year.

If the Vikes hand us homefield by losing, great. But it’s so anticlimactic that we’re right back to when the Dome Patrol was great but the team lost its first game in the playoffs. God that was depressing. And look how long it took us to get back! We were so crazy about that we thought Aaron Brooks was the answer. That’s bad. If we can’t go out and take a victory against some awful team like Carolina or Tampa then how can we expect to beat a team that doesn’t suck?

And that’s the bottom line: Tampa sucks, Carolina sucks. I don’t even think Dallass was very good…they have 2.5 wide receivers and a decent running back. I have to respect that Dallass came into New Orleans, into OUR DOME, and had more intensity than our team. And that pisses me off.

I’m happy and proud that the Saints have done so well this year. But these last couple of games remind me of last year when it seemed like half the season was, “we’re mathematically alive and all we have to do is win the next game”….and then we’d lose the next game despite having superior talent. I expected us to drop some games late and I knew it would be tough when we lost one. Our team doesn’t know how to win. We kind of figured it out but then we got lucky in a few games and forgot.

We played well enough to beat Tampa even though we played poorly. We just couldn’t execute on some simple plays. Special teams was atrocious but we had a chance at the end. The defense could have stepped up…they had Freeman in a 3rd and long and let him run up the middle. Why do our passrushers seem overmatched all the time? They are either non-existent or they get a sack. Where’s the hurries? Where’s the hits that wear on the opposing qb?

One other thing for all the Reggie haters out there. You know who brought his lunch pail to the Tampa game? Reggie Bush. Sure the guy makes mistakes. But he does things that no one else can do in the NFL.

I love you guys. I love the Saints. I’m cheering for them. But damnit, I want to see something. This is not good enough. I didn’t accept this bs play last year and this year it’s even worse to tarnish our great season with lack of execution when it comes to crunch time.

    Hey troller

I, for one, hope we don’t even play starters in our game against you. As that is my stance, I agree that your Panthers win. BUT, the Vikings definately won’t win out; they won’t get past their first game.

And more importantly, after all is said and done… The Saints are in the playoffs and the Catz aren’t. The Saints will still have Drew Brees and you will still have Jake and his 20M contract. And, the Saints will still have Sean Payton and you will stil be stuck with Fox due to your too little, too late comeback to salvage an otherwise dismal season.

So, in essense, f..k you and the black and blue.

Wow, I got called out directly.

    I guess that’s flattering.

I hope that Peppers tests the hell out of Bushrod and Bushrod wins (again.) That’s what surprised me about Ware. Is Ware that much better than Peppers? Granted he’s not quite as ugly as Peppers, but that might play in Peppers’s favor on the field. Anyway, last game the Saints O-line somehow dominated Carolina. The main problem we had was on defense where we couldn’t stop the run. Sadly, I don’t expect that to change.

by xen-cuts on Dec 28, 2009 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

Prepare for the playoffs and forget about Carolina

The Vikings are the least of my concerns. While we’ve watched the Saints go in the wrong direction over the past month, need to keep in mind that the Vikings have been doing the same thing. IF we should get to an NFC Championship game, it will most likely be against Philadelphia, Dallas or Greenbay. Any of those teams will have to play us in the Dome regardless of how any of the remaining wins/losses for any team play out.

The one thing we don’t have to worry about is “backing into the playoffs”. We’re already there. Playing starters and going all out to win against Carolina makes NO SENSE regardless of the outcome of the Vikings/Bears game tonight. We need to start concentrating on beating the above named teams. Winning or not winning in Carolina will have no bearing on what happens in the playoffs. The last thing the Saints need to worry about right now is a “moral victory”.

    Actually...

The Vikings have not been doing the same thing. The Vikings have had 2 bad games. How many have you guys had? I lost count.

It’s funny that you’re not worried about the Vikings taking the #1 seed, because I feel the same exact way about the Saints. Don’t think you’ll get to the big game either.

Funny how we both think the other team sucks…..should be a fun game to watch if you get there….

Our coach and our quarterback like each other. They really, really like each other.

by Drew-Dat on Dec 28, 2009 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

    I see your point...

However, I tend not to believe the media hype. And I also tend to believe that if there wasn’t a Monday Night Football game that the Vikings were playing in, a certain media outlet (ESPN) wouldn’t have made a big deal of the “schism” of the month. In other words, it’s all BS……I hope!

by dsludo on Dec 28, 2009 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

    Actually I was joking...

Really, I don’t think their relationship, in and of itself, makes that much difference. I’ve worked well with bosses I didn’t like in the past. But with that said, I still think the Vikes have “issues”. Favre’s ego will always become an issue sooner or later. He used to be my favorite individual player until it became so obvious that he used his “good old boy” persona to script his own legacy. Now, like everyone other than certain sports writers and most Vikings fans, I’m done with him.

    Just a technicaliity, but

To sum it up, if the Vikings lose tonight, the NFC Championship game goes through New Orleans (should the Saints make it). If the Vikings win [this week against the Bears AND next week against the Lions], the Saints must win/tie against Carolina to clinch home field advantage throughout.

Didn’t the Panthers have like an awful season?

Didn’t the Panthers get annilihated by the Eagles (and others?)

Didn’t the Panthers pay Jake Delhomme like multiple millions and he is a less than ordinary QB and they are stuck with him??

Didn’t most of the Panthers make plans for Jan4th because they got nothin’ else to do that day??

    overly loyal morons

    rotoworld.com:
    Jake Delhomme-QB – Panthers Dec. 25 – 9:19 am et

Panthers GM Marty Hurney insists that the move to place Jake Delhomme (finger) on injured reserve changes nothing about the quarterback’s future in Carolina.
“We’ve made it clear we have confidence in Jake,” said Hurney. How could that possibly be? Hurney is on the hook for Delhomme’s $13 million guaranteed in 2010, so he has to look for confidence where he can find it. Delhomme, turning 35 in early January, is a longshot to open another season as the starter.

    Jake Delhomme-QB- Panthers Dec. 5 – 11:38 am et

Jake Delhomme’s contract calls for him to receive nearly $13 million guaranteed regardless of whether he’s released or not this offseason.
Between March 1 and May 15, the Panthers will have to make a decision on Delhomme’s $12.7M option. If he’s released before March, his 2010 ($4.16M), 2011 ($5.12M), and 2012 ($3.4M) salaries are guaranteed for skill, injury, or cap reasons. In other words, the Panthers have done a number on themselves. They aren’t the type of organization to pay Delhomme to go away, so they may have to sign or draft someone to compete with him next season.

    Jake Delhomme-QB- Panthers Nov. 30 – 12:55 pm et

Jake Delhomme has a fractured finger on his right (throwing) hand and is undergoing tests Monday to determine if he’ll miss time.
This should be the excuse the Panthers need to bench their $42.5 million quarterback. Delhomme, who threw four more interceptions in Sunday’s loss to the Jets, has an 8:18 TD to INT ratio on the season.

And where is the harmony? Sweet harmony.

    First seed doesn't matter

All that matters is how we play in the playoffs. If we play well, we can beat any team, any where. If we don’t, we can lose to any team, anywhere, especially if that team is a playoff team. No matter what happens next week, the next game to matter is in three weeks.

    reckless abandon

am i the only one who thinks we need to throw everything weve got at the panthers next week? im sick of playing it safe and hoping good things happen, lets go back to the chainsaw dick team that went for it every time. if we dont have any confidence in the kicker, lets score td’s. remember when we used to have at least five a game?

start greer, shockey, and whoever is not on ir. carolina can kiss my a$$. if we are going to get beat, than we might as well come out swinging.

    Respectfully disagree

While I can understand your passion, it makes no sense to play a meaningless game with reckless abandon. I would not trade a victory for even one starter being lost for the playoffs. If you haven’t noticed, we have a propensity for getting players injured. Let’s take that risk on games that matter…. not so “carolina can kiss my a$$”.

do you really think the vikings will lose tonight?

tell me why next week doesnt matter. in the divisional game are we going to save players for the nfc championship? what good is health if we arent going to play great like the team did earlier in the season? playing cautiously has made us soft.

    "F***!"

    -me

by DrewBreesManCrush on Dec 28, 2009 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

It doesn't make any difference if the vikings win or lose tonight....

Playing cautiously, as you put it, has more to do with limiting play calling than it does with which players are on the field. Since it’s obvious that Payton isn’t going to tip his hand prior to the playoffs, what do we gain by using everyone not on ir and playing with reckless abandon…. other than risking further injuries? We just tried that approach against the worst team in the NFL at home and it wasn’t very successful.

As far as the Vikings are concerned….. I’m not sure they are going to win their next two games anyway. Do I think they’re going to lose tonight? Probably not, but I wouldn’t be totally surprised if they do. Regardless, If we get to the NFC Championship, there’s a much greater chance it will be against Philadelphia, Dallas or Green Bay than it being the Vikings. In that case, it will be in the Dome no matter if we’re 13-3 or 14-2.

Worst case scenario of losing at Carolina: Playing the Vikings at their dome. Couple of things to comtemplate regarding that. One, I’d rather play them at the Metrodome than play the Eagles in the Superdome. Two, if we can’t beat the Vikings on the road, we don’t deserve to be in the Super Bowl anyway. Three, and most important, the only games we’ve lost all season were at home.

To clear up all this "backing into the playoffs" BS.

A team “backs into the playoffs” when their season record is 9-7, and they need six other teams to either win, lose, tie, or die, to get a wildcard spot.

No matter how you slice it or dice it, FOURTEEN AND TWO, OR THIRTEEN AND THREE IS NOT BACKING INTO ANY DAMN PLAYOFFS.

I swear, some of you would complain if you were hung with a brand new rope!
