Bears Win; NFC Championship Game Must Go Through New Orleans

Thank you, Chicago Bears

Beating the Minnesota Vikings means the New Orleans Saints have now clinched the first seed in the NFC and assured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs as long as they're still in it.

As someone who already has his tickets to the NFC Championship game, this is very good news. The Saints just need to uphold their end of the bargain.

Talk about it.

I knew we shouldnt be to concerned...

Philly has a shot at the 2 seed. Also, there center is out for the year…..BIG HOLE on their O-Line.

Somehow I predicted this

Although I didn’t predict such a close finish.

What’s important now is that the Saints get healthy for a playoff run. There’s no sense in going to Carolina in the cold and having someone go down. They’re going to need all the help and luck they can get in the playoffs.

What’s maybe most shocking is that the Vikings are now technically the #3 team in the NFC and could be at #4 if things go even worse for them against the Giants next week. That’s amazing for a team that was 11-1.

Us Too!

I know the wife loves football, but I think she was cheering as loudly for the Bears as she usually does for the Saints. It felt weird pulling for the Bears, but I think she enjoyed it too much! Hmmm…if it’s so easy for her to be unfaithful to the Saints, should I be worried?? Just kidding…I think…

What I really see is that the NFC is WIDE open

Saints and Vikings are slipping, Eagles blew a big lead but held on, Cowboys look strong, Packers are dominating, and the Cardinals…are the Cardinals?

Also, all the big leads blown and the comebacks…there are gonna be some WILD playoff games in the NFC this year. Expect much drama.

The Bears just did our dirty work for us tonight, so my hats are off to them. We couldn’t beat the Bucs at home and they saved our bacon. Thanks, Jay.

What’s up with all of these teams that are eliminated from the playoffs winning games against teams that have a playoff future? Carolina, Chicago, Tampa…

Wha's up with all those teams.....

What’s up is that those teams that have no chance in hell of making the playoffs are damned and determined to make a mark this season. ‘We may not have made the playoffs, but we sure as hell beat down the Saints (or Vikings). If we’d have had a better season…. we could have gone to the Suoerbowl and kicked their butts!’

This definitely takes some of the sting out of the Tampa loss...

I think with 2+ weeks of rest, the defense will be back to it’s former fast, playmaking self. Also Meachem will learn to run past the sticks on out patterns on 3rd and 7 during this off time as well which will help the offense. Bell and Thomas are dinged up and I think with this rest period, the running game will be back too. Dont forget, the Saints have been the best team in the NFC all season.

Trent Dilfer

Trent Dilfer is on ESPN right now, and he is the only analyst who makes sense anymore. He’s saying what anyone who’s paid attention to football the past ten years already knows: All this crap about “momentum” going into the playoffs DOES NOT MATTER. It’s a myth; it’s a convenient altruism for media pundits like Herm Edwards and Skip Bayless to spout out and fill minutes of dead air. The Saints absolutely do not need to win against the Panthers to erect a sense of momentum going into the playoffs. What they need is a healthy Jabari Greer, a healthy Scott Shanle, a healthy Jeremy Shockey, a healthy Lance Moore, and to keep promising Charles Grant boxes of doughnuts in exchange for sacks.

Rest the starters and NO MORE BLACK PANTS

I’ve thought since the Vikes got drummed by the Panthers that they were the last team we needed to worry about.

Here’s how it will go down:

Philadelphia beats Dallas this week.

Dallas plays in Minnesota in the first week of the playoffs (and probably wins)
Green Bay plays in Arizona in the first week of the playoffs (who knows who will win)

Dallas (on maybe Minn.) plays in Philadelphia in the second week (Eagles win)
Green Bay or Arizona plays in N.O. in the second week (Saints win)

Philadelphia plays in N.O. for the NFC crown (Saints win)

Saints win Super Bowl over whomever.

by Drew-Dat on Dec 29, 2009 12:27 AM CST reply actions

I find it ironic that the Saints may be facing the Colts for the Superbowl this season when in 2006 if they had beat the Bears they would have been facing the Colts in the Superbowl.

This team needs to win in Carolina.

Their collective confidence is shaken. They’ve become predictable and comparisons to the 2008 team are becoming commonplace.

Plus, you can’t rest all of the starters. NFL teams aren’t that deep. It’s safer if they open up a big lead and make the other team quit.

1) Saints (1) beat Eagles (3) in dramatic fashion
2) Packers (5) beat Vikings (2) in dramatic fashion

NFC Championship
Saints beat Packers in front of a booming Dome crowd, by at least 10 points.

Super Bowl
Saints beat Chargers in dramatic fashion

Only problem with this theory is....

If you think the Eagles beat the Cowboys in a hypothetical 1st round, it would make sense that you think they will win the last regular season game against them in Philadelphia. If that occurs, the Eagles will be the #2 seed and the Vikings will be the #3 seed and Dallas will play the Vikings in the first round. If the Saints play the Eagles, it will be in the NFC Championship game since the winner of the first round with the worst record will play the Saints in the 2nd round.

I think Dallas will win vs Eagles and get the higher seed (#2)?

The Cowboys are playing good football and I expect their stadium to be pumped as they hate the Eagles. The Eagles just eeked it out vs Denver and have been poor in 4th qtr. Also, Eagles lost their starting center who started the last 71 games in a row with Donovan and was the only OL member who started every game this season. Their OL still is in flux with really no depth so I think it’s exploitable. Also don’t think anyone can handle De Marcus Ware on their team. If a team vs Eagles can take the long ball away from DeSean Jackson, the Eagles struggle. Big if.

Also, vs Giants- Eagles won fairly comfortably but Giants ( a terrible team) had over 500 yds offense. Eagles have problems at LB position, OL and safety. If Roy Williams can catch 4 passes and not fumble, then edge to Dallas since Austin, Witten and RBs will be main pass receivers. Either way we beat the Eagles once and can beat Dallas for sure if we are at full strength.

Arizona is the sleeper. Who can predict them? I could see them beating any first round opponent. I like that GB and Ariz will beat each other us this weekend. Come to think of it, we are the only team that can avoid a blood bath this weekend. Minnesota has been exposed. Even with Favre’s heroics they are very beatable and a poor road team. AP is an unbelieveable RB, but why aren’t his stats better? Weird. Green Bay I am not worried unless the world changes and we have to play them in GB which can’t happen.

You may be well right about Dallas over Philadelphia

I actually don’t like the Eagles more than the Cowboys, but I hope the Eagles win. Only because it’s the only way to make certain that the Vikings don’t get the #2 seed. I dont like the Bears either but I was pulling for them last night. I’m for whatever team of the moment that can further contribute to the tarnishing of Farve’s well planned and executed “legacy”.

by Drew-Dat on Dec 29, 2009 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

Well if Cowboys and Giants win, then Arizona would get the #2 if they win. Could make things a bit interesting that way too.

by FriarBob on Dec 29, 2009 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

SP should ...

rest our key guys with injuries of course; Greer, Shockey, Shanle, Moore and the others that are nursing injuries. We need Pierre Thomas to be 100% for the playoffs.

Having said this …
I still believe the majority of first string units should start the game and play the better part of the first half!!! It’s important going into a bye to work on what needs attention.

So play those who need to play and consider it an opportunity to practice …
but in a game situation.

Offensively …
I think little has changed and in fact I believe we may actually be in better shape than we were at the beginning of the season. The emergence of Meachem and the improvement in Reggie’s yards per carry are encouraging.

Drew is Drew!!!
He is consistent and automatic and as such he and the first string should see no more than a quarter or two of action.

What has been inconsistent as of late …
it the defensive fronts inability to protect the pass rush. Against Dallas and a handful of others, Brees just didn’t have the time needed to make plays. Some improvement is needed here.

I have been encouraged by our secondary’s overall improvement since Porter’s return and am hopeful Greer will be on board soon as his coverage has been missed. These two guys in addition to Sharper and Vilma, put the “D” in the Saint’s Defense.

Speaking of something missed …
our teams ability to stop the run, worries me as we head into the second season …
the season that counts!!!!

I think that Sunday’s matchup against Carolina will be a good test even without DeAngelo Williams on the sidelines as Jonathon Stewart has been a load and was key to the Panther’s win this past Sunday.

So the starting D should see as much if not more game action come Sunday!!!

When Drew comes out …
and Brunell marches the Saints down field …
I’m hoping Hartley gets a chance knock some pigskin through the uprights as he certainly just needs more opportunities going forward!!!

After week 17, I’m hoping the bye gives our injured and the coaching staff ample time to heal, fix and tweak …
and that the Saints finish what they’ve started.

Never cheered so hard for a non-Saints team

First I threw my remote and it smashed against the wall when Brett tied the game on fourth down. My curses woke up the entire house.
Then just as the kids fell back asleep I screamed obscenities at Robbie Gould and woke them up again.
Finally, after my fellow Vandy alum, Cutler, threw that beautiful winning TD I did a happy dance all over the house. I couldn’t help but wonder if Brees, Payton and the boys were dancing around just as excited as me. I guess McCray probably was…
