Ask The Falcoholic Redux!

Just to get it out of the way: Yes, we just got beat 34-7 by the Eagles. No, we're not a team of little girls, or tiny baby ducklings, or even some horrifying half-human, half-duck hybrid. Yes, we look terrible. No, I don't want to see your NFC South Division title t-shirt, Saintsational!

Now that we're good on that, let's get to the questioning. Surely you must wonder if Matt Ryan or Michael Turner will be back to help us triumph beat stand a chance against you. Maybe you want to know if our defense can possibly stop you for four quarters. Perhaps you'd like to know Dave the Falconer's recipe for a delicious cocktail that will wash away the pain of losing (personally, I like to down a couple of unlit Molotov cocktails following a game like Sunday's). Whatever your question, we've got answers. I guess.

Please don't forget to recommend this post so it stays up at the top of those of you who have questions.

There's a good one!

Well now…for all the Reggie haters wouldn’t that just be dandy…we lose Reggie to the DB’s and it comes to haunt us! Let’s see I can remember as far back as Al Dodd, I believe he holds the distinction as the first starter Saint to get traded to our hated/beloved/hated Falcon brothers. He was a West Jeff boy if I remember right and went to North Western. Of course Bobby Hebert, Morten Andersen…ok, I’m done without looking….I do not want to see a mature (and healthy) Reggie Bush twice a year for the next 5 years do I?

Well I was pretty optomistic about your season

I really thought the dirty birds could make the play-offs but it all started with a win against philly
So where do you go from here the rest of the year? Will a Saints upset make the season for ya’ll.
What changes do you think can be made next year to help secure your 2nd place in the div.
And do you think you can make enough changes in the off season to win a wildcard spot next year

by simone219 on Dec 7, 2009 8:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

A Saints upset would at least prove to us

That we’re not as terrible as we looked against the Eagles, but a 9-7 season or playoff berth is really what would make the season.

I think we’ve got to draft defense again, address our secondary issues and pick up an impact free agent along the defensive line, if there are going to be any out there. Our offense will, I believe, work itself out, but the D sucks this season.

Gotta love the Falconer

Even though he is in the enemy camp, he does write great posts. I actually feel for you guys after the many key injuries to your team. Losing both Matty Ice and The Burner for any amount of time is killer. My question is this—how do Falcons fans feel about how they rushed Turner back from injury too soon, which apparently has worsened the injury and caused him to miss more time? If not for that two weeks ago, he probably would have been ready for the Eagles. When do you think he’ll return? Next week? I’d rather see him get another week of rest.

Angry is too light a word

Though that anger has been conveniently re-directed toward the way the Michael Vick story is being covered. Blergh.

He might come back this week, and we could really use him if he’s able. The thing that really hurt before was that they rushed him back against the Bucs, literally the one team left on our schedule where Turner was not really a vital piece. The coaching staff is really starting to get on my nerves.

Dave, the falcingist Falcoholic of all

Let’s move on to 2010:

After Harry Douglas takes Michael Jenkins’ job, do the Falcons cut Jenkins?

Quick first thought: What position would you draft for first next year, assuming high quality availability at any position?

Who gonna check me, boo?

by stujo4 on Dec 7, 2009 9:28 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I Falc with the best of them!

I don’t think they’ll cut him, because he’s really a great blocker. If he doesn’t move down the depth chart next season, someone hasn’t been doing their homework.

I’d draft a cornerback first. Our depth chart there is actually pretty deep, but we lack a true #1 corner. Moving everyone down the depth chart one spot would actually improve the unit immensely.

Does it upset you...

to see the Atlanta Falcon/Micheal Vick supporters standing and cheering during yall tough loss yesterday. I know if Arron Stecker was to have a good game next week i would’t be cheering for him or waving his jersey while my team walks off defeated.

What corner coming out this season would you say is a good fit in yall secondary and what about taylor mays or are you content with your current safeties. Thanks for your time.

It was upsetting

I tried to explain why I felt that way in a post today, and I agree with you. I root for laundry first and foremost, and cheering for a guy who screwed over your franchise just two years earlier and dropped two touchdowns on your team is indefensibly bad.

My dream target would be Joe Harden, the Florida cornerback. I think he could step in and make a huge impact immediately.

Is Ryan really that good?

Remember Arron Brooks. He still leads in the Saints record book for most TD’s in franchise history. At one time in his career with the Saints he looked like the QB for the next 10-15 years. It took a few years until his weaknesses were exposed and teams learned how to shut him down. He never did catch on with another team. Any chance that happens with Ryan?

by central scrutinizer on Dec 7, 2009 11:28 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

There's always a chance that will happen

But I think Ryan’s just going through some second year growing pains. Both he and Joe Flacco should be fine for the long-term, and I expect Ryan to at least be an above average NFL QB for a decade.

Is Matt Ryan having a "sophomore slump"?

His numbers are down, but are they down significantly? I suppose that would depend on how you define significantly.

His passer rating has fallen from 87.7 to 80. His yards per attempt is down from 7.9 to 6.6 (I’d say that’s the most significant change, there). He’s thrown more TDs per attempt (from 1 in 27 to 1 in 21.6), but also more INTs (from 1 in 39.4 to 1 in 28.9), and his TD/INT ratio is slightly worse (from 4/2.75 to 4/3).

He also hasn’t had as many “statement” games this year. Last year, he cracked 100 in passer rating six times. This season, only twice, with four more games to go. And he hasn’t had any great comebacks that I can recall, other than the one that almost worked against the Giants.

If you grade straight, it’s not much of a slump, perhaps; but if you grade on a curve—i.e., compared to expectations—it must be a disappointment. Everyone expected him to rise, and instead he’s slipped back a half-step.

So what’s the verdict?

Sophomore slump

The biggest knock on Ryan coming out of college was that he threw too many picks and tended to overthrow receivers, and that’s exactly what he’s done in 2009. I’d say it’s a regression or an inability to cope with an expanded playbook, but he’s clearly having a down year. I don’t expect it to be a trend past this year.

I don't understand why the Falcons didn't do well this year.

The 2009 ATL team seemed to be fantastic and only added some more weapons, dropped some dead weight. The injuries aren’t helpful but good teams (which I thought the Falcons were) usually overcome these problems.

Do you think the ATL coaching is to blame for this year’s collapse?

Do you think that teams played harder against ATL early in the year because of the 2008 success and that has worn the team down?

Is Matt Ryan made out of card board?

How did the offense add Gonzo and get worse? They’ve looked so-so all year.

Is your O-line unproductive, injured, or old?

Do you think Turner will be back next season? He’s highly paid and might have a productivity drop off.

Do you think the ATL offense can torch the Saints’ decimated defensive secondary similar to Wash?

What is an unfortunate twitch?

Will you cheer for the Saints once the playoffs start, just so we can have an NFC South champ…and secondarily because the year after a superbowl win is usually a giant let down?

The Falcons’s players mentioned that after game one they now knew what the Saints are all about and would be ready for them when they played later in the season. Based on that, other than the defensive secondary, what are the Saints’ biggest defensive weaknesses? What will be ATL’s offensive gameplan versus this saints defense?

How will ATL game plan to stop the Saints’ offense?

Will you eat at the Varsity prior to attending the game? I hate their burgers but the shakes are pretty good.

by xen-cuts on Dec 7, 2009 12:17 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I went to the Varsity once

I didn’t eat. The smell was revolting, and the constant hectoring shout of “What’ll ya have?” made me want to punch someone.

Seriously, Dave, Atlanta has to come up with a better culinary icon than that place. If I had to choose between lunch at the Varsity and jock itch, I wouldn’t hesitate to go hungry.

Wow

1) I think coaching is partly to blame. I think our coordinators have been working with mixed talent, but have also not put their players in the best position to succeed. A good example might be the four straight runs up the middle out of the Wildcat near the goal line yesterday. We didn’t manage to score.

2) I think we’re just playing a harder schedule and dealing with an absurd number of injuries. That’s about it, really.

3) He was made out of cardboard. He has a cardboard girlfriend, a nice cardboard apartment and a cardboard car in Cardboardonia, just outside of Atlanta. The only thing he couldn’t make out of cardboard….was love.

4) I think it’s a regression by Matt Ryan that has really driven this whole thing. He hasn’t been as sharp, the play-calling hasn’t been taking advantage of our weapons and we’ve had injuries, as well. Gonzo’s been great.

5) Injured. The difference between early and the year and now is staggering, and we could be missing 2-3 starters against you guys.

6) He’ll be back. I could see the team trading him for a boatload of picks if they think something’s wrong, but I kind of doubt it.

7) Yes, but I think you’ll torch us too. And we’re going to need Matt Ryan back and healthy.

8) The kind of thing you get when you see a host of designs proclaiming how great the Saints are. See also, attack of the vomits.

9) You know, I’ve thought about that very question. Haven’t come up with my answer yet. Ask me again come playoff time.

10) There’s going to be a bomb planted in your locker room. Ha…ha…ha ha ha!

Seriously, I have no idea what they’ve got up their sleeves, but I’m not extremely optimistic that we’ll stop you dead.

11) Hopefully by blitzing with greater frequency and backing up defensive backs so they’ll be ready to stop the Saints short, instead of catching up to them. It would help to have a floating defensive back who could pick a couple passes.

12) I live waaaaaay up here, so I haven’t and won’t be eating at The Varsity. Someday, though.

Are you at all concerned that last year’s success was a brief shining moment? It is not uncommon for a first year coach to make a huge turnaround but be unable to sustain or build on that success in subsequent years (Jim Haslett, Eric Mangini, etc). Any concern that is the situation there?

This has nothing to do with the up-coming game, but....

I’ve seen the media reports of Vick’s return to Atlanta… that being a pretty even split of cheers and boos at the beginning of the game later replaced by chants of “we want Vick” after he scored a touchdown.

What are your thoughts on the feelings of the Falcon’s fan base as a whole?

Personally, I’m in the group that thinks he should not have been allowed back in the NFL. He succumbed to his sick self-indulgence without any regard to the consequences, be it the tortured animals or the team and city he represented. Like any good rivalry should be, I’ve always “loved to hate” the Falcons. But, I thought it was a sad day for the franchise to hear him cheered when he scored for the opposing team.

by Drew-Dat on Dec 7, 2009 10:00 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think most Falcons fans

Aren’t necessarily angry at him, but they don’t support him. The past is the past, after all, and a short memory is an advantage for any fan. I think a lot of people were angry on Sunday, not at Vick, but at the fans who placed a jersey number above an entire team.

If you want to know the reason Atlanta’s not regarded as a good football city, that’s probably it.

how do you want the falcons to finish this season?

Obviously you’d like to make the playoffs but it’s really not looking like you’ll make it with a 9-7 or even a 10-6 record. So, with the playoffs almost out of reach, would you like to see the Falcons bench the starters to stay healthy for next season while possibly improving your draft position if you lose the rest of your games or would you rather them play hard and finish 8-8 or 9-7 and out of the playoffs and just get what you get? I personally wanted us to lose our games when we were mathematically out of the playoffs last year to help our draft position. I know it’s not a very good way to look at it and probably not fair to the fans that pay to see their teams play but I couldn’t help hoping they’d lose but in a very entertaining fashion.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

by skinnykinney on Dec 7, 2009 11:36 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Play hard

Always.

The prudent thing might be to bench starters, but I’m a firm believer that you should go out and try to win every game. Losing on purpose sends the wrong message to players and to fans alike in my mind, so even if they could move up a couple spots in the draft with a loss, I’d never root for it. Just ain’t in my nature.

According to a noted bird specialist, it's roughly 24 miles per hour

And I hope he’s right, because I’d rather not fly off a bridge in the middle of nowhere.

That means it’s roughly a fifth of the cruising speed of a Falcon. You win the speed battle. But Saints, of course, fly much higher.

I was pulling for falcons against the eagles

I hope you falcon fans remember this crap by andy reid , he was playing Vick and making sure he scored against the falcons just to stick it in your @#%%, I sure hope mattie Ice and the rest of the team remembers this slap in the face the next time the falcons play the eagles, I think it was cold of Potbelly Reid to do that , Like it was the fans fault the dogkiller was convicted of dog murder, I hope yall can take some of that Saints hate and put it toward the eagles and do not forget that slap in the face Potbelly Reid has done to the Falcons and there fans….
