Reality Check

Guys, we just came off a great win, but I have noticed something that is trending, and seems a little disrespectful. The topic I am speaking of is calling Drew Brees, “Breesus.”  This is disrespectful to Jesus and to Christians. I am not here to preach, but maybe we should start being a bit more respectful to people’s religions. I LOVE this site! I want to repeat I LOVE this site, but I think we should show more respect to things that are higher than sports. Thanks for reading, and feel free to post some comments.

If folks choose to be offended, let ’em. And yeah, my sig file is about me, so I am certainly not offended by calling Drew “Breesus”, for us long-suffering Saints fans he IS the savior!

Just from my background I have no problem with Breesus.

I’m not a believer and never will be, but after watching the Redskins game and if God or Jesus was offended it didn’t show with all the lucky breaks we had. I think it is all done in jest. I don’t think anyone will actually replace Jesus with Drew Brees. Just a pun off his name. Unless in New Orleans during Sunday Mass, they start replacing Jesus with Breesus after we win the superbowl then we might have a problem with God. Anyway, I don’t have an issue with any one beliefs as long as they are not force onto me.

PC

I respect the need to be PC, but really it gets out of hand sometimes. I think the whole Breesus thing is funny and that is the intention of it. Nobody is out trying to offend anyone and if someone does take offense to it then so be it. They’ll get over it.

+1

Someone would have to be out looking for something to be offended by to be offended by this. There are a million more seriously offensive things going on in the world than this.

word!

As Breesus would say, you have to turn the other cheek

nothing wrong with it, just in good fun. people take things too seriously sometimes, but i do understand if it offends you. the only advice i can give is look away if you dont like the content

it interesting, though...

the idea of saying “breesus” is to make a relationship between drew brees to jesus…
now if you don’t believe in jesus…as a historical figure, God, messiah, or any other title
why is breesus even a compliment?
isn’t the point of calling brees breesus to associate brees to “god-like” attributes?
but if jesus isn’t considered to be such, then why the connection?
i myself am a christian, but i don’t really take much offense to the breesus comments
i think it’s being done in jest and i do find it humorous
but i do think that there’s definitely room for people to take offense to it
you have to understand that the fundamental basis of christian belief/doctrine is founded on the identity of jesus being God and comparisons to person’s faith in jesus as God and an athlete can draw some frowns
with that being said….
i hope this forum remains a “sports/saints” related forum without getting to political/religious or the like
who dat!!!

Hoo boy..

I’m going to be honest, but I’ll try not to go off on a tangent, because nobody really wants that.

But seriously, why the need to be uptight over this? Shouldn’t it be offensive that we’re rooting for a team named the SAINTS? That such a prestigious title of religious work should be used in vain? I’m not religious at all. I have my reasons, and while people may not like that, it’s the way it is. But why should only the ‘faithful’ be allowed to express opinion and distaste? But that’s not really the important thing here.

The point is this. We all root for the same damn team. We all consider Brees to be our savior, the one chosen to lead us to the promised land of Super Bowl Championship glory, right? I say we worry about the other stuff later, and come together for the one thing we ALL want to see: The SB 44 Champions, The New Orleans Saints. If that isn’t cause for the name Breesus, well, I don’t even know what else to say.

by sernycrusher on Dec 7, 2009 2:58 PM CST reply actions

yea

some people are christians, myself included. some people are not. doesn’t make them bad people, doesn’t make us good people. our actions define us. our personal beliefs are for us.

you should be comforted by our players thanking god after every game. listen to meachum every time he does an interview. the first think out of his mouth is usually that god blessed him. i like it! and he’s not the only one.

btw, breesus doesn’t offend me. there is no comparison in my eyes. i do find it funny though. like lol funny.

After the 5000 yard season

I started praying to Breesus.

I don’t want to be persecuted for my beliefs. Stop it.

I don't use the phrase myself but,

I spent 22 years in the Army so those who choose to can.

I spent my time in the Army with a good bit in Iraq

I am not trying to push any buttons or anything like that. I just wanted to bring my thoughts out, and let them be known. I don’t see this as an attack of faith, but I do see it as disrespectful because of the way I was brought up. I just have a lot of respect for my faith and my beliefs. I am glad we can debate this topic without anyone getting hostile. Go Saints.

i really respect your approach on this. to be offended and discuss it openly as well as you do is a rare trait, thanks for voicing your opinion, good post

Also

I support when any player thanks God. It is beautiful and should be done more often. I also love the simple celebrations of points to God in the air for thanks after a touchdown. He is good.

In light of this post..................

I think If you were to ask Brees about this subject, he would say, he would rather not be
referred to as “Breezus”. Just saying, he does not represent himself that way.

doesn't this say a lot about the saints fan base?

i think a topic like this could have caused a lot of heated debate amongst other groups but i love the class and respect that every member of CSC shows to one another… life is good as a saints fan! GEAUX SAINTS!!!

Yes!

This does say a lot about the fan base, and I thank everyone for allowing me to share how I feel on the subject and for sharing. A little respect, a cool head, and a lot of love will go a long way. We have a lot to be thankful for! Thanks guys.
