Sean Payton: "We're going for it.''

Payton's about to have a lot more admirers around the United States. He told me Saturday he's not going to take the foot off the accelerator down the stretch, not even if the Saints have homefield advantage clinched in the NFC playoffs. The Saints, instead of taking the last game or two to let players heal for the playoffs, will try to make history if they're in position. They're aiming for a perfect season.

So I guess

PK has come down off of his “Unless Malcolm Jenkins turns out to be Deion Sanders, the saints won’t go 8-8” stance?

by SaintBevo on Dec 7, 2009 2:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

PK is ridiculous

We’re playing who we have left on the bench. I’m not sure who we have to rest at this point? Plus we kind of NEED homefield advantage. If anyone observed how Minnesota was destroyed in ’zona last night they would realize the importance that holds for us. PK, did you see that game?

On another note, ’zona scares me a lot.

going for it

Did Payton learn from 2006, when he rested starters in the final regular season game at home against the Panthers? I had seats in a section of season ticket holders and did they ever give Jamie Martin hell. I felt bad for the guy, even though he was stinking up the place.

I think it’s the right thing to do. As long as he pulls Drew and Marques before halftime and if Photo-Op has a career high in touches.

Who gonna check me, boo?

That's what he says but ...

If they have locked HFA, starters out in Q2 @ Carolina and possibly even vs Tampa the week before… My two cents…

I have always said...............

If you got to be there and you got to play the game, you might as well win it. The game againt the skins was eggzactly that. They had the Division won and did not have to win it but there is no quit in this team. They could have conceded and live to fight another day but they never gave up and it paid off with a “W”. How many Saint teams over the years had that mentality? I am just as guilty as anyone about wondering when the old Saints start happening again. That was many games ago and I am now expecting them to win every game. SP has changed MY CULTURE !!!!!

by saint-sly on Dec 7, 2009 3:33 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Homefield advantage

At this point, we need to win 3 of our last 4 to secure this. Of course, if the Vikings lose again that number lessens. They next face the Bengals at home (tough challenge), visit Carolina (not a gimme on the road), visit the Bears (probably a W), and then finish off at home against the Giants (may be tough).

Even if the Saints lock up HFA by the Bucs or Panthers game, I’d like to see them go for 16-0. Both games could and should become blow-outs early, so they could rest most starters shortly into the 2nd half. If the Falcons are still without Ryan and Turner next week, I think we win that one and there’s no way the Cowboys beat us in our own house this year. It’s gonna be like a repeat of Troy Aikman’s first ever start in the Dome—complete destruction.

After our luck-out win yesterday, the football gods might get pissed if we don’t go for the perfect season. Despite King’s “report,” Payton is right to shrug that talk aside. Focusing game by game is what has gotten us to this point and he’d be foolish to start talking beyond that now. Let’s still take it a game at a time and let the Cards (pun intended) fall where they may as long as we get the no. 1 seed. I don’t see any possibility for a team to beat us inside the Superdome this year.

It comes down to this

I WILL BE AT THAT GAME IN CHARLOTTE. My first live Saints game since 1983. And if the Saints come in 15-0, and I have a chance to witness history, and Payton decides not to “go for it” and rests his starters instead, I will track him down and make jambalaya out of him.

I actually think we could win that game with Brunell and the back-ups.

Now that's Minnesota's lost

We could clinch going into the last game; if they lose again we can clinch by Tampa.

It does make some sense; we live on the offense, and we’ll want to stay in sync. We’ll also be having some people coming off injuries that we’ll want back in the game with some more raps. However, I imagine that even so a lot of people will be getting rest if they need it (like Reggie or anyone who’s marginally nicked up).

I'm proud of my damn strong football team. Have a great day!

He can't sit any starters...

or Colston anyway…. I already talked to Payton about it. I clinched a playoff seat for my fantasy team and I need Colston to play.

Good call

Indy will most likely rest their starters like they always do and so far it has worked once out of 10-11 tries to that is not a good percentage so I think I would but the petal to the metal

There's only one issue with this for Payton

If anyone, and I mean anyone gets hurt, the media will hound him until the end of time. That’s what really makes it ballsy, I think.

By saying this...

he’s transferring the media attention on to himself away from individual players. Also, the the players now will be playing to protect Peyton’s rep as much as their own…

by TigerPaw on Dec 7, 2009 9:30 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Brunell should quarterback second halves beginning immediately(maybe not Dallas if it’s close, but it won’t be). Back-up quarterbacks have won Super Bowls before, and that is the big picture. Of course Payton will strive to win every game, but God forbid if Drew gets tweaked there are still games to be won. Give Brunell some reps. Give Jenkins some experience. And so forth. Let the injured heal. Let’s go into the playoffs with Lance Moore on the field, a fast Reggie, maybe some starters in the DBF. What do you expect Payton to say, well this game or that game, we don’t care if we win? With a bit of luck (and it’s our year to be lucky) all four of those games can be won anyway.

I agree.

Once they get a 14 point lead on anyone, it should be 2nd string time.

I ain't worth winning if you don't win big....The Mighty Ducks.....

Payton will play them all, maybe just not all the time. He knows that he needs to keep them sharp and tuned up. They will be so pumped up that they won’t feel the wearyness or the pain. Hell they can rest come February and they know it. These guys are committed, and they believe that it’s their destiny… so do I…… Patton marched his troops 100 miles for 3 days in crappy weather and then engaged in battle without rest and kicked ass. When asked if he was not asking too much of his men, he said no, because “I trained them”. Payton trained these guys. They’ll do it because their the BEST!!! Cha Ching…………

I love this

but I don’t think that he will need to play them after the 1st half. The Bucs, well we saw what we did last game. The Panthers, well we’ll be out for blood after having to come from behind. I want to win out and make history with the Dolphins!

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

by skinnykinney on Dec 7, 2009 11:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think going undefeated in regular season is more important than winning the SuperBowl

like 44 teams have won the SB – happens every year

but only 2 have won all their games – everyone knows them. But who recalls all the SB winners ?

However, if SB is the goal I say … bench Drew the last 4 games !

Keep him healthy for the playoff run. Saints will still win 2 or 3 and have home field advantage.

by WarWolf on Dec 7, 2009 11:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

are you kidding me....

Bench Drew the last 4? I don’t think so. This is guy that feeds off of rhythm. We all see that when the D is on the field for any lengthy time and Drew has to pace the sidelines, he gets out of rhythm. So sitting for 4 games will certainly mess with his rhythm for sure. There’s no way he would stand for that either, no Payton.

by narco301 on Dec 8, 2009 9:00 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

"This is guy that feeds off of rhythm."

And the team gets their rhythm by feeding off Brees. He HAS to at least START the games. Starting a game with your backup quarterback would be like Louie Armstrong singing “Othelo!”

Fat, dumb, and happy. Hell, two out of three ain't bad!
