Saints Free Agent Review - Offensive and Defensive Line
Offensive Line
| Player | Position | Years Exp. | FA Status | Evaluation |
| Jon Stinchcomb |
RT | 6 |
UFA |
I like Stinch cause he's always good for some straight talk after the Saints take a beating. But if I'm being honest, he's replaceable. Zach Strief, the biggest dude I have ever seen in my life, is the likely heir to the throne. More importantly, Strief would probably be cheaper. CSC says: See ya! |
| Player | Position | Years Exp. | FA Status | Evaluation |
| Jahri Evans |
RG | 3 |
RFA |
Evans needs to stay and the Saints need to do everything within reason to make sure he does. He's been a cheap date so far so Evans looks to be poised to cash in this year. If the Saints don't, another team will. CSC says: Keep him! |

| Zach Strief |
OT | 3 |
RFA |
Strief saw a fair amount of playing time last season and proved to be competent. Zach could definitely be a cheaper alternative to Jon Stinchcomb on the right side. He can also play the left side. Seriously though, he is gigantic. CSC says: Keep him! |
| Player | Position | Years Exp. | FA Status | Evaluation |
| Matt Lehr |
C, G | 8 |
UFA |
Remember that whole trial/murder/suicide/love triangle thing that went down last year? That was crazy. Geez. Anyway, Lehr did a pretty good job filling in under center, with a few exceptions. What really makes him valuable is his versatility and ability to play center or guard. He shouldn't cost too much so I say he's worth it. CSC says: Keep him! |
Defensive Line
There is a lot of competition at the defensive tackle spot but Antwan Lake has been consistently good. Lake made $1 million last year and the Saints already have a lot of money tied up with Brian Young and Sedrick Ellis. Also, 2008 draft pick DeMario Pressley will be ready to compete next season. So ss much as I like Lake, he may not be here next season. CSC says: Keep him!

The guy with the craziest name on the Saints is part of the same crowd at the defensive tackle spot. He would have to really impress during camp to earn a spot on the 53-man roster but if the Saints can get him cheap, it might be worth it. CSC says: See ya! |

Who? Never heard of him. There are too many other talented defensive tackles in the Saints for this guy to have a chance. No way he's in black and gold next season. CSC says: See ya! |

I couldn't even vote on STINCHCOMB
Because I have no idea of how good or bad he is. I don’t know how many sacks he allowed (although I do know it will be less than 16), or how many penalties he had, or how much he would cost us to re-sign.
Can anyone help with this?

I forgot my 2¢
In googling for the stats, I ran across several sites listing Stinchcomb as a free agent that many teams should sign. So he may get too expensive to retain.

I couldn't even vote on STINCHCOMB
Because I have no idea of what those poll questions mean.
But if it had been a simple up-or-down, yes-or-no choice, my vote is keep him. Stinchcomb has a rep as being very smart, and very good on screen passes and other plays that call for blocking downfield. That is an enormous part of the Saints’ offense. And did you notice that he has NEVER been called for holding?
I know there’s some anti-Stinchcomb feeling on CSC, and frankly I’ve never understood it. Stinchcomb is an above average tackle. Not Pro Bowl, but good. Do we have anyone better ready to take over? No. Are we likely to draft an equally talented replacement? No. Dave makes a good point that Strief will be cheaper, so it’s going to be a matter of balancing how much better Stinchcomb is with how much more he wants. In the end, he may walk. And that makes me sad.
Oh when the Saints...Start kicking ass...You don't want to be in that number...

definite anti-Stinch on CSC
Notable accomplishments:
- Has never missed a meal and often eats off other teammates’ plates.
Earned 4.0-grade-point-average in high school
Four-year starter at Georgia, opening 34 of 37 games…
All-Academic honors in 2001-02
All-SEC several times (big deal)
I’ll bet the Saints spend the money to keep him, for PR’s sake.
Change is GOOD. Except when you have to deal with a bunch of obstructionists.

no clue myself.
He has done what we have paid him to do extremely well. A few false starts over the years is the sign he is the big time screen guy. Trying to get downfield blocking. NO holds, holding is what you do when your beat. So that screams not beat a whole lot. Granted he doesnt face the #1 every game like the other side half the people here like to bash…
I bet if you asked Brees, he would say he is a keeper.

rec'd it because I just read all four choices, voted for #3, and then realized I don't know what any of the choices mean

ok THANKS for the stats
I can now say that I want to keep him, but I know he might be too pricey, so I may be sad. Let me go vote now.

meh
He should stay for sure. Solid right tackle. I don’t think we should let another lineman go, big part of the o line is chemistry. The o line started slow last year but played alot better at the end of the year. I think not resigning him would result in much the same. Resign him and we won’t have to wait 3-4 games for the line to get going.

Very good point Fruly
Chemistry.
QB to Oline is a massive one, look at Brees’ play when there is a nonstarter covering his blind side.
RB to Oline is another one, knowing your big boys up front and how they react is a good way to see how holes might open.
A Oline can cover a weaker member easier then it can welcome a stranger, even if that stranger is better then weaker member.
Now you could say that bringing in a stronger person is better if done before preseason and I agree but we are not going to find many better then him at RT. They exist but with the money we have available… why not fix the D first.
