And our starting saftey is...

Vontae Davis! He is a 6 ft tall, 204 pound defensive back with elite athleticism, oh yeah and some attitude problems. Okay so this isn't the most plausible scenario but there aren't any safeties worth the 14th selection. So if we don't trade down for some extra picks then we should still try to fix our most glaring weakness, safety. If he could be convinced that it would be in both of our best interests to try it out for a while then we may find the answer to the safety dilemma or possibly another good cornerback.

Davis is known for being a physical corner who is comfortable blitzing. And, he has the size and speed to take over the center of the field a la Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu. Alright so that's a bold statement but I think his cieling is that high... reaching it would be another thing. I'm pretty sure both those guys have some heavy ring fingers though.

Interestingly his brother is Vernon Davis(6th overall pick by the 49ers) who was part of the infamous sideline altercation with Mike Singletary. Obviously that brings up red flags but there are also reports out of SF that it really made Vernon get his shit together and he showed overall improvement thereafter. Maybe his brother Vontae got the message that he won't be able to f**k around at the next level.

Anyway, the inpiration for this post came from two things. The fact that we can't find a safety worth the 14th pick as well as the idea of converting one of our corners to safety. Does anyone think that Usama or another one of our corners could play safety? Also do you think Vontae could/would/should? Who do you think will be the starting free safety next season?

thank you t-money

for adressing the fact that there is no safety available worth the 14th pick. everybody wants a safety, myself included, but it’s not gonna happen if we don’t trade down and are still sitting at #14, guys. brian cushing would be a great option too i believe, especially if the usama move to safety happens, as suggested by jeff duncan.

I will never understand this business about "not worth the pick"

How does anyone know? Every year, somebody in the high first round—sometimes the overall #1—bombs. And every year, someone chosen in the lower rounds turns out to be an instant star. No one knows ahead of time what any player is really worth. The only thing we know with certainly is that we need a couple of good safeties to make Gregg Williams’ defense work. If we can get them in free agency, great; if we can get them in the fourth round, great. But if not, and the only shot we have at a reasonably good player is to take one with the 14th pick, we should do it. To use that pick on someone who may be a good—even great—player, but who won’t markedly improve the team, is a mistake.

Oh when the Saints...Start kicking ass...You don't want to be in that number...

perspective

Ed Reed: round 1, pick 24
Troy Polamalu (cough cough, only other good safety I can think of, oh yeah that Dawkins guy): round 1, pick 16
Brian Dawkins: round 2, pick 61

If the Saints take Vontae with the 14th pick, they’ll look like fools. Like Detroit.

Change is GOOD. Except when you have to deal with a bunch of obstructionists.

Don’t suggest drafting a CB to play S. It just does not look good.
Trading down is our best option.

been thinking...

about Young moving to S.
He played it a bit, he can hit. If he doesn’t look like he will crack the starting CBs this year, and I don’t think he will, then maybe its a thought?

this concerns me

rotoworld.com:

The Baltimore Sun calls it “fair to assume” that the Ravens will not bring back CB Samari Rolle in 2009.
This would make cornerback a huge need area. Taking a corner with the No. 26 overall pick is a definite possibility for Baltimore. Fabian Washington can replace Rolle, but the Ravens might target a big corner like Vontae Davis (Illinois) to take fellow soon to be cap casualty Chris McAlister’s place.

The Ravens have the 26th pick. We won’t get the value of the 14th pick by trading down (some safety who will suck), we won’t get Vontae Davis, and we will get another shit corner like Rolle or McAlister. Mickey Loomis is either going to be a big hero this spring or he’ll need Carl Peterson’s bodyguards.

Change is GOOD. Except when you have to deal with a bunch of obstructionists.

You've lost me here

I assume you’re talking about trading down with the Ravens so they can jump up and pick Davis. Okay…so what? There are a lot of people who don’t think Davis is going to be anyone’s savior, and picking at 26 we would probably have our choice of safeties. Will that safety necessarily suck? Of course not…either Louis Delmas (what a name for a New Orleans Saint, by the way) or Patrick Chung or Rashad Johnson has a chance of making a bigger impact that Vontae Davis, especially on our team. Plus, we’ll have an extra pick, probably in the 2nd round. A good outside linebacker, mayhap? Or defensive end? Or even another safety?

You’re freaking out way too early. The Saints have actually done pretty good in their recent drafts…show some faith, Brother Stu.

I worry too much. And I like that Chung kid, he has some hustle.
