Saints Free Agent Review - Quarterback, Running Back and Wide Receiver

Quarterback, Running Back, Receiver

Player Position Years Exp. FA Status Comment
Devery Henderson WR 5 UFA

This is a tough one. Devery had the chance to find a new home last off-season but no teams came a-callin'. After a stronger 2008 season, one in which he didn't drop as many balls, he may draw more interest. If the team thinks they can get by with the rest of their young, up and coming receivers like Meachem and Arrington, they may not put a contract on the table and Henderson might walk. With Lance Moore also a free agent, the Saints may not be able to afford both of them.

Lance Moore WR 3 RFA

After the 2008 season, Lance Moore is officially the number two receiver on the Saints behind Marques Colston. Making sure Moore stays in the black and gold should be the coaching staffs top priority behind re-signing Jonathan Vilma but it's gonna cost them. With Devery Henderson also on the market, things will get a bit tricky. My ideal situation would be to see the Saints sign both Henderson and Moore. I get nervous at the thought of breaking up the receiving corp that was such a large part of the number one offense in the league. But if they're only going to offer one of them a contract, Lance is my man. Hands down.

CSC says: Keep him!

Player Position Years Exp. FA Status Comment
Mark Campbell TE 10 UFA

Campbell has been loyal to the Saints and he's a great veteran presence but with Shockey on the roster and Billy Miller having a good 2008 season he's only a third option. His blocking might keep him on this team if the Saints don't find someone else. Someone who can play an entire season perhaps.

Player Position Years Exp. FA Status Comment
Aaron Stecker RB 9 UFA

Steck (Shut yo mouth!) is always there when injuries wipe out our backfield and is a good contributor on special teams but he's not getting any younger. However, he might be willing to accept a low offer just for the convenience of job stability.

Player Position Years Exp. FA Status Comment
Joey Harrington QB 7 UFA

Sure he might be a cheaper option than Brunell, who made more than $4.5 million last year, but there is a reason for that. Quarterback is not the position you want to be cheap with in case Drew ever went down. Plus...Harrington sucks. Cut him loose and let Payton start a new protege project with a younger, cheaper quarterback if he wants.

2 issues

1) Somebody voted “none of them” under the cloak of anonymity. If we all promise not to pile on, would that person like to offer some reasons why Lance should not be retained?

2) Brunell costs too much. It worked last year, not sure we can afford him this year. So what do we do for a backup QB? I think we keep Joey.

Change is GOOD. Except when you have to deal with a bunch of obstructionists.

Maybe...

….that person is very high on Meachem and Arrington.

With the year Henderson had, I know I have trouble choosing between Moore and him. I Probably would still go with Velcro-man, Lance.

I know Harrington gets bash everytime his name is mention but I’d be curious to see what he can do as a real second stringer at training camp with the offence we got.

T minus 51 week....

If Brunell costs too much

then we get him to take a pay cut. Slash that salary in half, and he’s still making better than $2 million, at age 39, for sitting on the bench (we all hope and pray). Wouldn’t you take that deal? I think Brunell would, and he’s better than Harrington. Twenty years from now, he’ll still be better than Harrington is now.

PLUS…as Saintsational said, get a protege quarterback. There will be plenty of young quarterbacks left over after the draft, all of them hungry for a chance to play in the NFL and learn under one of the acknowledged QB gurus. At least one of them will be good enough to be an NFL starter. It’s just a matter of finding that one. We already know it isn’t Harrington.

Jeff Garcia will be available. The Bucs just re-signed Luke McCown.

chase daniel

i think the saints should burn a late draft pick on him, if he is there, but nothing earlier than in the 6th round. he is similar in stature/style to drew brees and would be worth the risk, imo.

oh brother

9th, I respect your right to have and voice your opinion. It’s the content that I can’t take. Chase Daniel, from Missouri? You trying to make a St Louis Rams fan out of me or something? Oh wait they’re in Missouri. Focus! Um, I’d rather take someone from Notre Dame so I can complain about that. Let’s see how Chase does at the combine.

02/08/09 – PRO POTENTIAL: QB Chase Daniel — Perhaps the most intriguing MU prospect, Daniel scored a moral victory at the East-West Shrine Game when he checked in at 6-feet tall. But his play in the game was erratic. He’ll have to prove he can take snaps from under center and has no trouble looking and throwing downfield in the more conventional NFL offense before he can guarantee a spot in the draft.

So many provocations, so little time.

Joey, maybe

well, think about this, if we can’t find the run game again this year, and God forbid, Brees should miss some games with an injury, We are going to need a solid back-up QB. I think Mark still got it and would love to see him stay at least another year, but not sure about Joey. I think he may be better on this team than he was with the Falcons but not sure if I want to have to rely on him should God forbid Brees get hurt.

and Moore, we need Moore

Lance Moore has been around this team for only a few years but I know there is not one Saints fan that can not say he didn’t rapidly become an instant favorite of yours last year. I always thought the guy had great hands and good speed and seemed to be in the open quite a bit (runs great routes) the few times he got on the field the two seasons prior. But last year he got more time on the field and got to show the NFL that he can play and play damn well. Brees obviously developed great confidence in him last year and he is only going to improve so that QB-WR connection is only going to get stronger between the two. Gotta keep him most certainly. I still love Devery but if it comes down to it, Moore or Devery, sorry Devery.

definitely need to keep lance

he’s like the saints version of hines ward. he’s a glue guy that keeps the team running by making big catches on 3rd down when you need him to.

Now if we could only get him to throw some near borderline dirty, season-ending blocks and flex for us right afterwards…. never mind.

or throw a punch

and not get thrown out in the first quarter of the super bowl. don’t think he’s a dirty blocker though – you’ve got to keep your head on a swivel, especially in the NFL with the speed
