Saints Draft Board
I'm not going to claim to be a football guru so I'm just going to make a limited draft board. But the main point of this post is to get everyone else's input on the subject of a Saints Draft Board. Anyway I'm sort of going to try and focus merely on realistic possibilities at 14 but feel free to comment however you want. PS lets assume there's no trading down. Saying that if Sanchez started to slip we might be able to get some good value for 14.
Aaron Curry - never gonna happen but just thinking about it makes me smile
Malcom Jenkins - regardless of his 40 time he's the best DB in the draft and G. Willy likes him
B.J. Raji - again not too plausible but he'd really help us control the trenches
From here on I'm not too sure
Brian Cushing - He could really solidify a linebacking core consisting of Vilma and the under appreciated Fujita, Go Golden Bears (I'm from the Berkeley area but for whatever reason I've always loved the Saints)
Vontae Davis - regardless of what people say he has ALL the tools to be a shutdown corner, also my dad is an Fighting Illini alum so I've been watching him for awhile and he's good!
Clay Matthews - Honestly I don't know much about him and he's been considered the third best USC linebacker for awhile so I'm skepticle but others have been pimping him so I'll trust your opinions
Beanie Wells - He would pretty much complete an already potent offense. If he didn't fit soooo well I'd say we must go defense but if Payton chooses him my heart will only skip one beat and then I'll try and rationalize the choice the same way I did with Meachem(please reach your potential Meech).
Alex Mack - This is kind of a hometown pick, Cal Bears again, but I'd bet big money (please don't make any lame comments about taking me up on this bet) that he'll be an all-pro center for years to come. Not only may he be the best center in the draft but he's the smartest with a couple Academic All-American awards to back it up. This makes more sense if we trade down and if I wasn't following all of the precedents I've made for this post but he's my personal pick for a darkhorse draftee.
So how would all of you, especially the truly educated fans, construct a Saints Draft Board? I'm so excited for the Draft!

Might as well give the real reason
I made the transition from college football to the NFL when Ditka (the man) drafted Rickey (Also the man) and I never looked back.

I'm fine with all that
Except throw out BeanDip. Not an option.

There's a very good possibility...
we could all be eating “Bean Dip” on April 25th. Payton may just grab him at #14. Still, I think Jenkins is the more likely pick. G-Dub needs a new 1st round weapon for the incredibly awesome D he’s about to produce.
Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

is rey maualuga the best linebacker at usc?
from what i’ve heard, he is the best linebacker at usc. he’s a hard hitter and consistent tackler. so, if we need a linebacker, why couldn’t we take him and convert him to the olb position instead of mlb. IMO i wish we could see what morgan looks like with his return. if he comes back playing good, we don’t need a linebacker really. morgan(coming back, playing well), vilma, and fujita is a solider linebackers core. fujita is too underrated. Before the addition of vilma, we had fujita there playing in the nfc championship game and i believe he played mlb for us. he has played very solid for us and before vilma i thought he was our best defensive player along with mckenzie who is now gone. also, think about the announcers on a big hit from rey maualuga. it’d be “rey mauuuuuuuuualuggggggggaaa with a big hit on the outside!” hmmm sounds better in my head than on paper lol. if it’s not jenkins(and he is still available) then i think we should consider him.
Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

Maualuga
Is a 3-4 ILB… no more, no less. He is not great in coverage at all and would fail in the 4-3. Drafting him would set the Saints back great lengths.
I like Cushing and Matthews more than Maualuga.

news on Cushing
rotoworld.com:
Brian Cushing-LB- Player Apr. 1 – 4:22 pm et
ESPN’s Todd McShay reports that USC LB Brian Cushing ran a 4.69 forty at the Trojans’ Pro Day. NFL Network’s Mike Mayock had Cushing at 4.68.
He ran 4.74 at the Combine. There is growing belief that Cushing’s lack of ideal range makes him a better fit to play inside in a 3-4 than outside in a 4-3. Cushing also wasn’t an impact player on third downs in college.

news on Matthews
rotoworld.com:
Clay Matthews-LB- Player Apr. 1 – 4:19 pm et
ESPN’s Todd McShay reports that Clay Matthews was the most impressive of USC’s top three linebackers at the Trojans’ Pro Day. NFL Network’s Mike Mayock timed Matthews at 4.57 in the forty-yard dash.
McShay says Matthews looked smooth and natural in position work, and caught the football effortlessly. He is a better pass rusher than Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga, which could give Matthews the edge to be drafted first.

my 2 cents
don’t forget Simomneau as a LB- he has done some good things as a starter in the NFL. Seems to almost always find a way to compete for a starting position. He was a big part of the 2006 season. He won’t beat out Vilma, as MLB, but he could beat out Shanle as OLB and I am not sure Morgan can play OLB. But, either way, with a LB corps of Vilma, Morgan, Fujita, Simoneau, Shanle and then Dunbar backing up and special teams, there may be no immediate need for a LB. WE have Mitchell also. Drafting a pass rushing DE whose only focus is speed rushing the QB might make sense even if all it does is get Smith and Grant off the couch this summer and the first 4 weeks of the season! Then, draft a safety for depth.

we must
draft jenkins. although i’m afraid we’re actually going to draft an RB, our #1 priority has to be a FS—the signings of darren sharper and pierson pumpernickel don’t solve our biggest need, and we need a young badass safety with tons of potential to learn from those two vets.
unless we’re really planning on making a move in the 2nd round somehow— i think payton’s latest comments about addressing the RB need in the draft may be an attempt to leverage the 14th pick to a team like philly who’s hoping to get an RB late in rd 1. i hope that’s all it is—bc we don’t need a feature back, just a situational big bruiser to take some heat of PT. payton likes his offensive toys, though, so who knows—but we need to be in the 2nd round (or at least the 3rd!) to get at one of the top rated safeties if we don’t get jenkins.
i don’t see us going LB @ 14, but it’s not out of the question—the only person i know we’re not drafting is andre smith. i just really feel like it’s gotta be jenkins if we stay where we are.
