Around SBN: The End Of Sabanball: Details, Barbarians, And Precision

This New York Post article makes me think that the Saints could very possibly get back those 2nd and 5th round picks traded to the Giants for Shockey in exchange for trading first round picks this draft. Of course, that would mean we won't get a pick until no. 29. The writer of this article is convinced that the Giants will try to do something like this to get a mid-first round pick to go after a WR.

"Thank you, Jeremy Shockey.

Soon enough, that could end up being the sentiment of the Giants. The reward brought back for their erstwhile tight end, sent away to New Orleans before last season, figures to play a prominent role in how his former team goes about its business during the April 25-26 NFL Draft.

The two draft picks the Saints gave up to get him -- a second- and fifth-round selection -- bloat the Giants' total to 10 picks, and the additional second-rounder -- 45th overall -- is a strong bargaining chip to mix into a trade. There's a gaping hole at receiver because the Giants released pistol-packing Plaxico Burress but, considering the plethora of picks, ample opportunity to replace the (bullet) hole he left behind."

How about that?

It would bring things full circle…

The Detroit Lions are on the clock!

If it means we add some picks, I am for it

We could use some help at several positions and depth

If this does happen...

it would mean that when it was all said and done, we acquired Shockey for a mere 15 position first round shift in a draft short on highly talented, stand out players. Considering Shockey’s lack of performance last season, that would be just about right on what he was actually worth. This scenario may be too good to ever actually happen, but it’s nice to think about as we wait these last thirteen days until the draft. If Pay-Loo’s top-rated guy is already gone at 14 and the Giant’s top-rated guy is still there, then it might happen.

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

oh GAA!

trading with the giants would be great

as satchmo pointed out, it makes the trade for shockey much cheaper—except it’s not just a 15-position, first-round switch. they probably wouldn’t want to give us our 2nd rounder back, since it’s higher than theirs, so i’d think it’s a 15-position switch in both the first round and second round, plus we gave up a 5th rounder as well. but if the net result is us having picks #29, #60, AND Jeremy shockey for #14, #45, and #151—-talk about a good deal, even given shockey’s limited production.

at #29 we could take/reach for one of the top safeties, then go with one of the DTs we’ve brought in for a visit (Brace, Gilbert, Moala) or even Rashard Jennings at #60.

i think the eagles might be a more likely trading partner, as they really need an RB and have 2 first rounders— they could trade up from #28 and package that with their 2nd rounder (#53). lots of possibilities…

Yeah, that could happen

If Pay-Loo plays their cards right, I still think they can get more than just the Giants’ 2nd round pick in exchange for switching 1st’s. A 15 position move in the first should be worth more than just that. I’d want that 5th rounder too. I’ll bet the two front offices contact each other before the draft arrives to discuss the possibilities. It’ll still mostly come down to whether or not Pay-Loo’s top-rated guy is still there at 14. If they use that 14th pick, I fully expect them to trade one of next year’s picks for an additional first day pick this draft. No way Pay-loo is walking away from this with only four draftees.

Count on it—too much talent in the 2nd-3rd round range to just sit by. Especially after drafting an RB in the first round (!).
