To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.

To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back a third-round pick in 2009.

The Bears beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.

Now,....

The Broncos own the 18th overall pick and could be a potential trade partner for the Saints. It seems likely that they will target a QB with their first selection. If they’re also getting two first round picks, they can’t be expecting all that much from Orton.

As much as I dislike the Bears, I’m glad Cutler didn’t wind up in Tampa.

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Scratch the above post^

I failed to see that the Broncos already own the 12th overall pick. DUH! They won’t be looking to trade with us.

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

the best place for him

The worst thing is, the Broncos have to take Orton. He’ll compete with Chris Simms. I’m sure the fans are thrilled. Oh here’s a quote:

OMG its my worst nightmare!!!!!!!
Orton? Orton? Are we serious? I have to go throw up now!!!!!

Best trade in Chiefs history
I don’t care if Matt Cassel is a huge bust and Vrabel gets hurt on the first play of the game. Forcing a division rival to trade Jay Cutler for Kyle Orton was worth a 2nd rounder.

There’s some hilarious posts over there, including some very funny pics. They are partying over this trade. It’s almost like the Chiefs just won the Super Bowl.

Yup

C’mon, they’re a division rival! And, it is ironic that the whole Cassel trade started this. I almost feel bad for them. It would be a lot like Matt Ryan getting pissed about the Falcons looking at Drew Brees and then getting traded to a team in the AFC. This has been a damn interesting off-season, if nothing else.

HA!

I’m glad it’s them and not us. At least they get some very nice draft picks out of the deal. One thing is for sure, Cutler is in for a huge change of environment with both the weather and the fans. Bears fans are brutal when it comes to QBs. I expect he won’t live up to their immediate expectations and they’ll begin to hate him by week 6.

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Destroyed the Broncos?

It’s the Bears that just got hosed. Not only is Cutler overrated, but he has no weapons at all in Chicago to work with. Meanwhile, Denver has two first-rounders this year and two next year. Fix that defense and even Orton should be able to improve on last year’s finish.

The Bears are going to be out of it for years. Book it!

I tend to agree

Cutler has looked mostly good, but let’s see him with virtually no weapons and with a defensive coach.

by SaintBevo on Apr 2, 2009 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions

you both are so biased you can't see the truth

rotoworld.com:
The Broncos have agreed in principle to trade Jay Cutler to the Bears for Kyle Orton, first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, and a 2009-third round pick. The Bears will receive Denver’s fifth-round pick this year.
Bears fans like GM Jerry Angelo now. There were late reports the Redskins were near a deal, but the Bears swooped in. The compensation is quite fair for Denver considering the circumstances, but it’s still an amazing coup for Chicago. You just don’t often get a top-five quarterback entering his prime, and that’s what Cutler is. They have their first “franchise quarterback” since Sid Luckman in the 1940s, and all their offensive talent gets upgraded now. With that said, Cutler’s fantasy value takes a huge hit going from a high-powered offense with talented young receivers to a conservative attack lacking in playmakers.

Denver has Orton and Simms. The AFC West is tough. They’ll be under .500 this year.

Don't get me wrong

If I’m the bears, I have to do this. Cutler will be better than anybody else they’ve had at QB in a long, long time. I guess I just question the notion that all they need to win the superbowl is a QB.

by SaintBevo on Apr 2, 2009 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Newsflash

This just in: The Broncos have a good crop of receivers (Royal’s good, Marshall’s excellent), a pretty good O line, a magic RB helmet which can make anyone into a 1000 yard back, and one of the best OCs in football as HC. Anyone remember how everyone thought the Pats were toast when Brady went down? Anyone remember how Matt Cassel, a guy who hadn’t started a game since high school, went out and took them to within an ace of the playoffs? And now McDaniels gets two guys who’ve started in the NFL, AND a bunch of extra first-rounders over the next couple of years?

The reason the Broncos might, might go under .500 this year is their defense, which got old in a hurry and didn’t get re-tooled quick enough. Chris Simms is a smart kid who was unlucky with injuries and got run out of town by Hook ‘Em Gruden, while Kyle Orton has won with smoke, mirrors and Rashied Davis in the past. Put those two together with Josh McDaniels, and the kid will make lemonade. Denver doesn’t miss a step this year.

by MarcusR on Apr 3, 2009 4:40 AM CDT up reply actions

And Chicago?

The Bears are about to find out that their problem last season wasn’t quarterback. Cutler threw for a ton of yards last year, but that was in a totally different offense with better weaponry. But his TD percentage wasn’t much better than Orton’s (4.1 vs. 3.9) and his interception percentage was worse (2.9 vs. 2.6).

(For comparative purposes, Drew Brees was 5.4 and 2.7)

Interpolate the numbers—Cutler’s percentages superimposed on Chicago’s offensive tendencies—and Chicago just gained 17 more receptions a year, 1 extra touchdown, and 1 extra interception. To improve on those numbers, they don’t need a better quarterback—they need a better offense. They need a better scheme and better players to run it, and I don’t see either happening. These are the Bears, after all.

I take issue with this
The Broncos will miss Cutler, because they have the best young offensive nucleus in football. Tackles Ryan Clady and Ryan Harris will both go to multiple Pro Bowls. Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal are the best receivers in tandem 26 or younger in football right now. Last year, they, and Cutler, combined to form the number two offense in football, averaging 396 yards per game.

Maybe it’s my Saints bias that finds this hard to swallow. “best young offensive nucleus?” “best receivers in tandem 26 or younger?” I guess it all comes down to a matter of opinion. My opinion does not mesh with Peter’s opinion. The Broncos may have been the number 2 offense last year, but we all know who the number 1 offense was—the one wearing black & gold.

Denver got the better end

Denver now has 4 1st round picks over the next two years, and can add a qb and draft defense as well. The bears defense is on the way down and they’ll have nothing in the 1st round for 2 years.

Denver Post poll: Did the Broncos get a good deal ?

44% Yes. Three draft picks (and two in the first round) can rebuild the defense. And Kyle Orton will do.

56% No. Started with veteran coach and franchise QB, now they have a rookie coach and a undistinguished QB

Joe Bryant, Footballguys.com
The compensation picks have to be put in perspective. If you could wave a magic
wand and throw Cutler back into this year’s draft class knowing what you know
about his NFL experience, he’d be miles ahead as the #1 pick. Wouldn’t be close.
He would be a real live “can’t miss” as he’s already hit.
The Broncos got more for him than I thought they would given how they managed
things, but this still looks like a home run for Chicago to me. The Bears gave up
a lot. But they received a franchise QB and those are hard to come by.
But back up even further, how McDaniels bungled the whole thing to start with on
the Cassel thing is just amazing.

Jamie Dukes (I know!)

here

From the Bears perspective, they’ve now answered a lot of their own questions. They’re Super Bowl-ready now.
could go down as one of the biggest gambles — that either did or didn’t pay off — in NFL history. In recent memory, this is the closest thing that I’ve seen to a Herschel Walker-type trade in awhile.
I’m sure they’d much rather pay a known commodity like Cutler than two unknown draft choices. Think about it.

Great news for the Saints..

Denver will most likely take Marc Sanchez with their first round pick or even Josh Freeman, meaning Malcom Jenkins will most likely be available for us to draft at the 14th place.

Whoops! More nonsensical rah-rah from the media

Don Banks writes that “…the Bears have instantly upgraded their quarterback position to the best in the NFC North.”

Excuse me? There’s the little matter of this guy named Aaron Rodgers. Plays for the Packers, in the NFC North, I believe.

Here’s a 2008 comparison:

Quarterback rating
Rodgers, 93.8
Cutler, 86.0

Completion percentage
Rodgers, 63.6
Cutler, 62.3

Touchdowns
Rodgers, 28
Cutler, 25

Interceptions
Rodgers, 13
Cutler, 18

Yards per attempt
Rodgers, 7.5
Cutler, 7.3

Yards per completion
Rodgers, 11.84
Cutler, 11.78

Jay Cutler is not the panacea the Bears thought they were getting…and now they’ve lost their 1st and 3rd rounders for this year. How are they going to rebuild their defense, rebuild their offensive line (you really think Pace is the solution?), and acquire the skill players they need to take advantage of Cutler’s presence?

More to the point: are the Bears actually going to abandon their run-first philosophy and turn Cutler loose in the gunslinging role? And do they really think that’s going to work?

QB ratings and such just don't feed the bulldog

That’s all well and good, but I need something meaningful, something I can relate to. Something useful. Such as Fantasy Points Scored, which values passing yards, rushing yards, touchdowns thrown and rushing touchdowns, no penalty for interceptions. We all know who was #1 in 2008. But who was #2?

1. Brees, Drew NOS QB 358.75
2. Cutler, Jay DEN QB 337.45
3. Rodgers, Aaron GBP QB 335.30
4. Warner, Kurt ARI QB 320.10
5. Rivers, Philip SDC QB 315.65

18. Orton, Kyle CHI QB 228.55

Have you seen Kyle Orton play? Moments of pretty good mixed with too many GAAAA!‘s. The Bronco receivers will help his game, but that rumblling booming noise you’ll be hearing will be coming from the Mile High Report down the hall because those guys are going to be pissed. Chicago will probably make the playoffs.

Fantasy football is called fantasy football for a reason

…it’s a fantasy. It’s not real.

No penalty for interceptions? How does that translate to real game conditions, when turnovers are one of the biggest determinants of victory or defeat? It doesn’t. It’s totally unrealistic. It’s…well, a fantasy.

Besides which, you’re still ignoring that unless the Bears change their system, they don’t stand to gain all that much from Jay Cutler. Is he a real ace at handoffs? Gets them an extra yard per play with that phenomenal wrist action? No? Then I guess they’ll just have to Cutlerize the offense, and that takes better receivers and a total change of mindset on the part of their offensive coordinator. You can’t just order passing games from Sears (headquartered outside of Chicago, too bad), so Ron Turner is going to have to turn into Mike Shanahan in a hurry. But he’s going to have to do it without draft picks, because OOPS! those all packed their bags for Denver.

Fantasy points, ye gods.

Guess what?

It turns out Cutler may already be on the outs with his new offensive coordinator:

“However, Cutler may have an issue with Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner. Coming out of high school, Cutler thought he had a scholarship to the University of Illinois, where Turner was the head coach. Cutler has said Turner pulled the scholarship late in the recruiting process, resulting in his going to Vanderbilt.”

Boo Hoo

Cutler just needs to man up and realize that everything in life isn’t going to come easy or be easy for him. He really sounds like a spoiled brat in this situation. I hate that he has to deal with diabetes and all, but there’s no need to pout about everything and anyone who doesn’t give him the respect he thinks he deserves.

I wonder how much money Bu$ Cook is making on this deal. He seems like the puppet master in this whole situation.

Cutler v. Bullocks

Can you see the practices and traning camp?

Head Coach: “Hey, Cutler’s looking really good. He keeps getting that new safety turned around on the pump fake, lettng Hester go right by him. When he is in poston, Cutler throws the ball so hard it goes right through Bullocks’ hands.”

Def. Coordinator: “You don’t think that really happens to Bullocks in real games against other QBs, do you?”

Head Coach: “Do you have youtube access?”
