Mock Draft 1C

Greetings.

I wanted to post a mock draft I created. Please note this draft is based on a few very important variables. I am going to try and put up another couple mocks that will highlight some other very possible variations that I think are possible while still remaining to give a small explanation to each individual pick. I am sure that people will disagree so please give good reason why and maybe it will change the next mock. I was on the fence on a few picks starting with Cleveland. Hope you guys enjoy.

1.  Detriot                   Matthew Stafford
QB, Georgia
The Lions already have a deal in place, we just don't know it yet.
2. St. Louis                   Jason Smith
OT, Baylor
With Pace departing they have a chance to strike gold again. He may not be Orlando but he could anchor their line.
3. Kansas City                   Aaron Curry
OLB, Wake Forest
Curry provides an instant 3 down play maker. I think Orakpo gets a good long look based on his size and pass rush but they go with Curry.
4. Seattle                   Michael Crabtree
WR, Texas Tech
This is where things get interesting. I think the Sanchez talk was to stir up trade talk.. They don't get any trade offers for their spot so they take the best player available. Crabtree gives them a WR to complement T.J.
5. Cleveland                   Eugene Monroe
OT, Virginia
Cleveland has no intentions of trading Rogers and I don't see them adding a similarly sized tackle. Cleveland has a long history of striking out on tweeners and Mangini/Gholston didn't work out which is why they decide against Orakpo or Maybin. They take the safe pick and pair Thomas with another excellent lineman.
6. Cincinatti                   B.J. Raji
DT, Boston College
I think Cincy has a tough time picking between Andre Smith and Raji. They have to face some serious runners in Lewis, Mcgahee, McClain, and the nasty combo of Parker and Mendenhall this year and need to get Palmer the ball back quicker.
7. Oakland                    Jeremy Maclin
WR, Missouri
He is fast and it's Al Davis. I would pick Andre Smith here, they have talented runners and a huge investment at QB that needs protecting but what do I know.
8. TRADE Redskins        Mark Sanchez
QB, USC
It's Dan Snyder. He has been under the radar this year and deciding it's finally time to make a splash. (Do I have to admit that was sarchasm?)
9. Green Bay                   Brian Orakpo
DE, Texas
The Packers are in desperate need for defensive bodies for their 3-4 and Orakpo fills a need.
10. San Francisco       Andre Smith
OT, Alabama
He is too good to pass up here. It's a gamble that could have a huge payout for a team that started to put things together towards the end of last season.
11. Buffalo                   Everette Brown
DE, Florida State
Buffalo needs a pass rusher and they feel Brown is the guy for them.
12. Denver                   Tyson Jackson
DE, LSU
Jackson is the perfect pick as the Bronco's make the switch to 3-4. They also have the added bonus of snatching up the best 3-4 end in this years draft 4 picks ahead of San Diego who left Olshansky walk.
13. Jacksonville                  Chris Wells
RB, Ohio State
The Jaguars pick up an extra draft pick. Rather than reach on a WR they decide to replace Fred Taylor and go with Wells. They need a good complement to Jones Drew and Wells has good value at 13. They will find their WR in RD 2.
14. New Orleans     Aaron Maybin
DE, Penn State
Payton is a man of his word and takes the best player available. We have some youth in the secondary with Greer, Porter, Harper and Young but we don't at LB. The secondary has depth but there isn't a safety waiting in the wings for next season. I think the Saints feel that they can get a player prior to the start of the season this year or in next years draft as safeties don't tend to start coming off the board till the second half of the first round. Talent like Maybin is hard to come by and the Saints decide to grab the versatile pass rusher. Getting a top 10 player at 14 is too hard to pass up here.
15. Houston                 Malcolm Jenkins
CB, Ohio State
Houston needs another quality CB. Robinson is unhappy and tagged, this gives them a back-up plan for the future and a potential starter from day one.
16. San Diego                 Rey Maualuga
ILB, USC
I think Moreno gets a long look. I would take him simply because LT is owed alot of money and slowing down and Sproles hasn't proved he can take a full seasons workload. Ultimately defense wins championships and San Diego Bolsters theirs.
17. TRADE with Philadelphia                 Knowshon Moreno
RB, Georgia
Philly needs to grab Moreno. They need to find the future replacement to Westbrook as well as to take some pressure off of him this year. With Harvin's failed test he is too much of a reach for the Jets to take him at 17 and Philly wanted to secure their guy. Works out well for both parties here.
18. Denver                 Peria Jerry
DT, Mississippi
Dwayne Robertson didn't work out. Jerry isn't an ideal nose tackle but he is the highest ranking player on their board that fits under the need column.
19. Tampa Bay                 Vontae Davis
CB, Illinois
Tampa's most pressing need is CB. They won't be relying on the cover 2 but outside of Talib they don't have the personel to play anything but Tampa 2.
20. Detriot                 Michael Oher
OT, Mississippi
Detriot is overjoyed to see Oher on the board. This makes skipping on Baylor's Smith a little easier to handle.
21. NY Jets                   Percy Harvin
WR, Florida
They don't have a lot of needs or holes to fill. They could use a mauling run blocking lineman, a play making WR, and an obvious starting QB. Only 2 of those are somewhat feasible in the draft so they take a risk on Harvin. They picked up some extra draft help from the Eagles so it makes it a little easier to take the gamble.
22. Minnesota                 Darrius Heyward-Bey
WR, Maryland
Minnesota gets a deep threat and a starting return specialist.
23. New England     Clay Matthews
OLB, USC
I think Clay Matthews is the reason New England didn't trade up to us.
24. Atlanta                 Robert Ayers
DE, Tennessee
As much as Ryan would love Pettigrew, Ayers gives Atlanta an athletic pash rusher in an offseason where the Falcons made more defensive subtractions than they did additions.
25. Miami                 Brian Cushing
OLB, USC
Miami goes with Cushing. I see him as a better fit than English for the Dolphins.
26. Baltimore                 Larry English
DE, Northern Illinois
They took a gamble on raw talent last year on offense. I think they go the same route for their defense this year. They resigned Lewis who will be an excellent mentor for a player like English. Keep an eye on a Boldin trade here though...
27. Indianapolis                 James Laurinaitis
ILB, Ohio State
I don't like this pick but it is too much of a need to ignore right now.
28. Buffalo                 Eben Britton
OT, Arizona
They lost Peters and felt Oher was a reach their first time on the clock. They fill their need here with the massive Britton.
29. NY Giants                 Hakeem Nicks
WR, North Carolina
Nicks fills the need of the athletic, talented, big WR. I think he would have been a good pick at 22 to the Vikings as well. There is always the possibility that the Browns are picking here.
30. Tennessee                 Alphonso Smith
CB, Wake Forest
Titans need a young playmaker prospect in their secondary.
31. Arizona                 Donald Brown
RB, Connecticut
The Cardinals just found the perfect aspirin for their Edge headache.
32. Pittsburgh                 Alex Mack
C, California
Pittsburgh has had some recent instability at center, something they are not used to. Mack is a great pick here.

Maybin is way too risky as an OLB in a 4-3

They won’t take someone with so much boom/bust potential with their only pick in the first three rounds. He’s not physical enough for SAM and doesn’t have the speed or coverage skills for WILL. I don’t think Payton wants to wait on a developmental project because he has Drew Brees right now.

Solid start, stong finish

First, Nice post – good analysis.

Second, What!?!

I think you nailed the first and last pick, but I disagree with most everything in the middle.

I love the draft b/c we have no idea what is going to hapen. Everyone of us has a idea, that makes 100% sense to them, but sounds crazy to everyone else. I hope you put it on the NFL Predict the pick, I’d love to see how close each of us came when he smoke clears.

I don’t have the stones to put my draft up yet, but I know I have some crazy Ideas as to where some of these guys will go. Beenie Wells in round 2 anyone?
