2009 NFL Draft: Open Thread Day 2
Keep it here to talk about the second round of the NFL draft. The Saints currently have three picks today. We've got Malcolm Jenkins now so the question remains who will the Saints add with the few picks remaining,

rb on day two....
I’m pretty sure we could land someone who fits the “bruiser” mold in round four. I’ve had a man crush on Rashad Jennings ever since I watched his video on NFL.com. Seems to be a stand up kid and looks a lot like Duece on some of his highlight runs.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/rashad-jennings?id=71345
Also think that with the Cards drafting Wells, Edgerrin James could be a Darren Sharper type of stop gap for the RB position if Arizona cuts him. That may be a reach but it puts him closer to home, its an offense that would seem familiar to his Colts days and he shouldn’t cost that much considering his age.

agree
Jennings is a beast. I think he and Shonn Greene were the two best guys to move a pile. just what the Dr. ordered for 3rd & short.

This is where we do our best work.
One thing to remember: This team is only a handful of players/plays away from being a playoff team.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade up or use players to get our guy.
RB is definitely on the list, but I think we still need to find that SS or FS to replace Sharper (1 year deal).

There's gold in them thar later rounds!
I hope Pay-Loo are once again able to work some 2nd day draft magic. Me thinks they’ll pick up a RB first (Jennings would be nice). I expect to see them suddenly appear somewhere in the 3rd. Plus, we can’t forget all of the undrafted players they’ll go after and pick up as soon as “Mr. Irrelevant” is chosen. That’s where they got Pierre Thomas two years ago.
I should have said this yesterday, but thanks to M-E for running the open thread. I just noticed all the updates he was making to our horrible picks in the CSC mock draft. Great work!
Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

wow
deandre levy went to the lions at OUR pick in the 3rd round— and he was “projected” to be a 6th rounder. i thought he would’ve been a great saints; think there are better LBs available though. hopefully tyrone mckenzie, nic harris, or zach follett will still be around when we pick again. i don’t think we’re moving into the third though—no one really impressive is still on the board (except the RB jennings, but i don’t know if we really want him)

I think we want Jennings
Fans certainly do. Who knows what Payton/Loomis have in mind, but trying to trade next years first to get Beanie tells me they want a big back.
Personally I think Jennings fits our need much better than Beanie could.

The Patriots trade #89...
to the Titans. If there was gonna be a Pay-Loo trade into the 3rd, I figured it would be there. Maybe they will just sit tight until the 4th after all. I doubt Jennings will still be available at #116.

No More CB's!!!
We have enough depth now with Jenkins, Greer, Porter, Gay and Young
We need – NEED – an OLB. Let’s try to grab Follett.

We always need more CBs
Until we stop the deep ball consistantly I won’t be happy with our secondary.
Also, I think Jenkins will wind up a Safety. So we’re not as deep as it looks.

Vaughn- Safety
Negatives: Better in run support than against the pass. Questionable instincts. A step slow in recognizing the action and has a hitch in his turn. May lack the agility to mirror routes. Better facing the quarterback. Loses track of the ball and has only marginal hand-eye coordination for the interception. Surrounded by a great deal of talent at Wake Forest.

Positives: Looks the part. Rare size and upper-body development for the position. Aggressive defender that attacks in run support. Reliable open-field tackler. Heavy hitter that can separate the ballcarrier from the ball, resulting in forced fumbles and passes broken up. Appears to have at least adequate straight-line speed, good balance and a low backpedal. Good leaping ability to battle for the ball. Has developed a reputation for game-changing plays over his career. Came to Wake Forest as a wide receiver and is still an ascending player. NFLDraftScout.com, distributed by The Sports Xchange

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
by satchmo26 on Apr 26, 2009 12:12 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Stanley Arnoux
Positives: Short, squat frame to handle taking on and discarding blocks. … Plays with good overall physicality. … Reliable tackler between the hashes. … Flashes some pop as a hitter and can close in close quarters. … Better in coverage than his measureables indicate. … Gets surprising depth on his drops and reads the quarterback’s eyes. … Team leader who made the Dean’s list.
N
egatives: Shorter than scouts would like and a bit round in the middle. … Lacks the instincts and quick first step preferred at the “Mike” ’backer position. … Takes a moment to recognize the action and is slow to flow toward the ball. … Lacks the straight-line speed to beat backs to the flanks and is a liability in coverage. … Lacks the lateral agility to consistently get around blockers in tight quarters, thus relying on his pop to disengage. … Needs an open lane to close when rushing the quarterback.

Florida
Outside linebacker Aaron Curry deserved the spotlight, but Arnoux, a four-year starter who never earned all-conference accolades, also received a Combine invitation. Considering that the 42-game starter leaves the Demon Deacons with 251 career stops, it’s easy to see why. A steady presence in the middle, Arnoux lacks rare athleticism, but his reliable tackling between the hashes make him a late-round possibility for clubs in need of an inside thumper. Okay, I'm all better now
To take two Wake Forest players in a row, the Saints must have done some heavy scouting and feel pretty comfortable with their choices. Vaughn sounds like the heavy-hitting enforcer that Gregg Williams obviously covets…but I wonder what this means for Roman Harper.
As for Arnoux, he’s going to be a tandem with Vilma whenever Williams goes to a 3-4 look—which will probably be rare. Other than that, he’ll just be depth…but good depth. Besides, he’s got a good New Orleans name. Gotta love anyone whose name ends in X. Maybe hoping for a superstar in the 4th round was a bit unrealistic.

Just watched the Combine videos on both, and now they’re starting to look like real good pickups. Figured Pay-Loo felt that these 2 guys would be gone by Round 4. Plus, they’ve always fooled everyone and found great talent in later rounds.

Just thought of something regarding Arnoux
Jonathan Vilma is like the Drew Brees of the defense: these are your two absolutely indispensable guys. You know they’re going to play virtually every snap. So you don’t pick a quarterback in the fourth round, and you don’t pick a middle linebacker in the fourth round, because you know you’re not going to use either one of them.
Unless…do you suppose Gregg Williams plans to use some formations with Vilma as an outside backer, and Arnoux is there so he can handle the middle on those plays?

At Least Payton is playing it Smart
Fellow fourth-round pick Stanley Arnoux will start out at weakside linebacker in New Orleans, with the versatility to move inside if necessary.
He said no one on the Saints’ staff had real close personal ties to Wake Forest, but he said it’s an impressive up-and-coming program that was special to watch on tape, especially on defense.
He said the Saints didn’t strongly consider trading up into Round 3, and they weren’t tempted to target a running back. He said these two guys were graded higher than any tailbacks on the draft board. At this stage of the draft, Payton said, you’re looking for the best available player — like a Carl Nicks last year.
“I’ve mentioned before, we’d like a big back. But I don’t want to try to manufacture a pick. That’s where you get yourself in trouble,” Payton said.

Next year's draft must be a very good one.
Teams must see a lot of talent coming out next year. I notice the Patriots and other teams are stockpiling next year picks and the Saints so far chose to not trade away any of their next year picks.
Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

As I understand, it's not because of the talent
It’s because next year is uncapped. You can sign as many players as you want to, so New England is going to sign a flood of players coming into camp.

Since when do we need an inside thumper?
Okay, this is getting weird. This happened to me one other time…I just typed out a post about Jim Grobe’s interview with Nola.com, and when I hit “Post” it re-posted a former post instead. Now, in case it doesn’t show up the way I see it, the title of this comment—which I did not type—reads "Since when do we need an inside thumper?—which is the title to another former post. Plus, the buttons underneath now read “Posting,” “Posting,” and “Cancel.”

Oh god
It’s Russell Erxleben.
One of college football’s hidden gems, Morstead might not have gotten the media attention of other kicking specialists, but professional teams are certainly aware of his ability. Few specialists have the ability to be equally effective in multiple roles, but the SMU Mustang has proven that no task is too daunting.
Morstead was kicker and punter for SMU. Obviously, they’re thinking of consolidating positions and saving a slot for someone else…not a bad idea, necessarily, except that we tried it before with disastrous results.
At least we didn’t spend a first rounder this time.

by MtnExile on Apr 26, 2009 2:33 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
per NFL.com
Morstead has some place-kicking experience in his background as well, but he’ll compete for a roster spot solely as a punter.
I think we like Hartley (I do), but Pakulak has never had a particularly strong leg.

well
i understand why this is a disgruntling pick—but i think it’s pretty smart and in line with our strategy this season. field position is always critically ignored but one of the most important factors in being a successful football team—with the revolving door we had last season with our specialists, i like this move even if pakulak remains our punter. i just hope this pans out…
does anyone know what we gave up to trade in? i’m too lazy to search for it

WTF?
I step away for an hour and come back to find a new punter? OK, this could be a worthy pick considering last season’s special teams woes, but they trade away our 7th rounder to get him? and next year’s 5th? I look forward to hearing Payton’s explanation cause I just don’t get it.

Payton's explanation:
“He has a strong leg, we think the best leg in the draft,” Saints Coach Sean Payton said. “We think we’ve got a very good punter and the objective is to improve ourselves at that position. We think it’s going to be a very good competition with Glenn (Pukalak)”
Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
by satchmo26 on Apr 26, 2009 3:05 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Is he talking about Mehlhaff?
Strong leg. Best leg in the draft. Isn’t that what they thought last year, burning a sixth-rounder and finally going with a free-agent?
Were they that dissatisfied with Pakulak? You don’t draft someone just to provide competition…you draft people you think can play. When a team has only one specialist of a kind, you draft the guy you think will replace the one you already have. But I hadn’t heard any kind of dissatisfaction with Pakulak.
I think Payton just can’t get along with punters. Having to punt at all offends him, apparently, and he resents their presence on the sidelines. If Morstead makes the team, I give him 8 games before he’s replaced.
Bah!

boom rec'd it
I think Payton wants a perfect punter. Monster punts, long hang time, can drop it inside the 10, and can cover the return if needed. Which is a lot to ask. But it explains the pick. Hell, maybe it’s Loomis who can’t stand punters, who knows?

Seems puzzling to me too. He may wind up being this year’s Pierre Thomas for us, not drafted and picked up shortly thereafter. It would seem hard to believe though. Could it be because he went to a small school? I don’t know what it could be.
Yeah, I can’t make sense out of the punter pick. OK, we may have a need for him, but what made them think he wouldn’t be available later? I can’t wait to hear a more substantial explanation from Payton. So far, the punter Kool-aid is tasting sour to me. It may be like you said earlier:
I think Payton just can’t get along with punters. Having to punt at all offends him, apparently, and he resents their presence on the sidelines. If Morstead makes the team, I give him 8 games before he’s replaced.

Morstead
Pick Analysis: The Saints trade up to get a quality directional punter in the fifth round. Morstead has some place-kicking experience in his background as well, but he’ll compete for a roster spot solely as a punter.
Positives: Tall, with an adequate build and long legs. … Good extension on field goal attempts. … Uses his height to bring in high snaps (may have issues with lower snaps). … Has a quick two-step delivery as a punter (about 1.25 seconds) and kicks the ball at a low position, but still gets 4.7-4.8 seconds of hang-time on 40-yard punts. … Adept placing the ball inside the 10-yard line. … Has the size and speed to be an effective last line of defense covering punts. ... Improved his accuracy as a kicker in 2008, making 5-of-6 from 40-49 yards. Made 3-of-4 FGAs from 50-plus yards in 2007 and didn’t attempt a kick from that distance in ’08.
Negatives: Does not turn the ball over enough in his full-length punts. … Has not been a kickoff specialist, but may be tried there due to his leg strength. … Must prove himself as a holder if not used as a kicker. … Missed three kicks inside of 40 yards in 2008, four in both 2006 and 2007.

crazy
Did Payton think he was set, didn’t need any other players to compete for roster spots? I am pretty confident that he has his eyes on a big back who will not be drafted. He’ll invite him to camp just like PT and Lance and make a star out of him. He is still stinging from Antonio Pittman. But…. he’s not stinging from Mehlhaff and that one punter too? Crazy.

Rashad Jennings WTF?
So, which is it that the Saints don’t like: That Jennings only has 1 year of big conference experience, is fast and loose with the ball (fumbleitus), can’t block and runs too upright? Or that at the interview dinner, he insisted on saying grace in a very long and demonstrative manner and talked about Christ all night? I’m going to guess it’s the former (and I agree, what kind of film are all you guys looking at? He’s running against junior college defenses) but I wonder if the latter didn’t make them question his toughness. Plus they already have that fullback to lead the team prayer.

But I don’t get all the buzz on Follett either:
Compares To: LARRY IZZO, New York Jets — Like Izzo, Follett plays like a UFC champion – packs a wallop, but boy can he get out of control. He will at least buy himself time in the NFL based on his stellar special teams play and also as a situational player to disrupt the backfield, but there are a lot of holes in his game, especially in pass coverage. He will likely be on the draft board much longer than most experts predict.Copyright NFLDraftScout.com, distributed by The Sports Xchange.
