15 Reasons Why the 2009 Saints Season has to be Better than 2008
| Player | Pos. | Status | Date |
| DeMario Pressley | DT | Placed on Injured Reserve | July 27, 2008 |
| Adrian Arrington | WR | Placed on Injured Reserve | August 29, 2008 |
| Hollis Thomas | DT | Placed on Injured Reserve | September 9, 2008 |
| Mark Simoneau | LB | Placed on Injured Reserve | September 12, 2008 |
| Tracy Porter | CB | Placed on Injured Reserve | October 7, 2008 |
| Martin Gramatica | K | Placed on Injured Reserve | October 8, 2008 |
| Charles Grant | DE | Placed on Injured Reserve | November 3, 2008 |
| Mike McKenzie | CB | Placed on Injured Reserve | November 10, 2008 |
| Brian Young | DT | Placed on Injured Reserve | November 15, 2008 |
| Aaron Stecker | RB | Placed on Injured Reserve | November 18, 2008 |
| Mark Campbell | TE | Placed on Injured Reserve | November 19, 2008 |
| Aaron Glenn | CB | Placed on Injured Reserve | November 27, 2008 |
| Kevin Kaesviharn | S | Placed on Injured Reserve | December 4, 2008 |
| Courtney Roby | WR | Placed on Injured Reserve | December 8, 2008 |
| Reggie Bush | RB | Placed on Injured Reserve | December 17, 2008 |
I understand that some of these players aren't on the team anymore or weren't much of a help in 2008 but the point is that being forced to deal with this incredible amount of injury in one season makes it damn near impossible to have a sucessful year.

Which player going on IR was biggest blow?
I’d contend that Tracey Porter was the biggest loss of the season. I think our depth at the CB positions was poor, although Jason David did better last year. Despite the free agent signings, I’d like to see us us our 2nd rd pick on a DB. (I know currently we don’t have a 2nd rd pick, but I advocate dropping back in the first to add a 2nd.)
I’d like to see a list of players who missed games last year, but weren’t necessarily placed on IR. It seemed like every week there were 1-3 guys not playing who weren’t on IR. Schokey missed a bunch, Thomas missed some down the stretch.

Agreed
Tracy Porter and Mike McKenzie were the biggest losses. Adrian Arrington might have been a big loss too, since he showed great promise before his injury.
Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

porter and arrington
these guys made contributions to the team early on… and they could have had a lot more progress and development had they played. can’t predict the future and say they would have won some games for us, but given how many ‘close’ games we had… they just might have.

Roman Harper looked great in his first season, too
…until he was hurt. Since then, he’s started, but hasn’t made any of what you might call “progress.”
I just hope Porter doesn’t follow that same pattern. As for Arrington…he’s going to explode.

Is that Harper's fault or Gibbs' fault?
I tend to blame Gary more for that. The hiring of Gregg Williams and Bill Johnson will be the real difference makers this season. I’m inclined to forgive most of the shortcomings of our D players over the past two years and blame it mostly on Gibbs’ defensive scheme. In Gregg I trust!

I tend to agree
But, on the other hand, it was under Gibbs that Porter looked great.

Good point, but....
Porter looked great under Gibbs because he’s a defensive, ball-hawking freak of nature who will look absolutely god-like in a G-Dub defense. At least…that’s what I’m hoping for.

me too
And Harper likes to hit. And on a good hit he likes to stand up tall with his hands hanging down at his sides just slightly back from his hips while he stares at the victim.
I sure hope he does well under Coach WIlliams, Porter too.
How you like me now?

as long as our D stays aggressive
other teams will have to stay worried. our defense played too “defensively” if you know what i mean. i’m hoping to see a hungry defense that does more attacking than defending. well… you know what i mean!
seriously though, our defense looks pretty good… on paper at least. add in the g-dub factor and HERE WE GO!

it's sort of a cop-out,
but i’m willing to give most of our defenders a get-out-of-jail-free card for the last two years compliments of gary gibbs.
especially since virtually everyone (still on the roster—josh bullocks notwithstanding) has had a moment or two where they look really good—even my least favorite saints linebacker scott shanle had a few games where he played great. so i know these guys all have potential, but if they continue to under-whelm this season…
one thing i’m not worried about is this new defensive attitude about being “aggressive”—of which the downside is getting caught out of position—since it seemed we were ALWAYS “out of position” with gibbs…

Fix D - Step 1:
First step would be to keep our DBs on their feet. They should never be on their butts on the turf, but again and again you’d see them falling down. It’s not as bad since we lost Fred Thomas, but it still happens more often than professionals should. Might be a problem w/ not using the proper cleat size. I don’t know, Maybe we need a nw equipment manager.

Step 1A - GET A PASS RUSH
I don’t put a ton of blame on the DB’s because the $150 million dollar investment in our D-Line hasn’t produced anything lately. Grant, Smith and Company have to start putting some QB’s on their back and then I will be more critical of the DB’s. One thing you can count on is that G. Williams will be aggressive and he will get after the passer.

Rec'd
The PowderPuffs need to put some pressure on the QB. Last year was pathetic for that. I still dont give the Secondary a pass tho. The pressure upfront makes their job easier… but they still have to do their job.. and last year they did not.

Me, too.
That was my point a few weeks ago. The Saints weren’t too shabby in passes defended and intercepted last year, but they were dogs in the sacks department.
Now comes the chicken and egg question: Were they not sacking because the opposing QB had no trouble finding an open receiver, or were they defending lots of passes and picking off a few because the opposing QB felt comfy in the pocket?
They were 13th in interceptions, but 23rd in sacks. Maybe not conclusive, because of the indirect effects a pass rush has on the number of interceptions and pass coverage has on sacks, but with the Saints’ defense being 19th in pass attempts per game, there wasn’t an inordinate amount of air under the ball from the opposing team. We just noticed the number of long balls that absolutely killed us.
I can’t think of a good defensive team that doesn’t have an intimdating pass rush. The line has potential, but in the last two years, I’ve seen a lot of black and gold being pushed aside like the Red Sea. Drafting a quality prospect on the end may motivate Grant and Smith, but even if it doesn’t, that may be just what Dr. Gee Willie ordered.
Do you know what it means...

Kind of off topic..
but what’s going on with Lance Moore? Please tell me he’s coming back :(
by AKAY47 on Apr 9, 2009 12:16 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He's coming back
He’s a restricted free agent with a 2nd round pick as compensation. Saints have the right to match any offer made to him and if they choose not to match, the other team has to give a 2nd round pick to compensate.

Don't forget Injuries not listed here....
At various points during the season the Saints lost Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey Mike Karney & David Patten. I think the Saints need to stay the defensive course taken in free agency and draft defense. I would like to see the Saints trade down into the later first round to pick up a 3rd round pick (or if possible a 2nd, but I don’t see that happening) and use the later day one pick on a Bruiser RB. As far as the O is concerned….“if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

BAH! you were doing so well... then
and use the later day one pick on a Bruiser RB. As far as the O is concerned…."if it ain’t broke don’t fix it."
Why say draft a RB then say .. its not broke do dont fix it?

Gotta disagree with you, MT
He said “day one,” not “round one.” That means use the pick we get by trading down…a 2 or a 3. And if we do get such a pick, and Rashad Jennings is still around when it’s our turn, we should snap him up. He’s as big as Chris Wells, with a bigger heart.
That doesn’t mean the offense is broken right now…just that we can make what’s already great, phenomenal.

Martin
I would like to be acknowledged as coming out firmly against Gramatica last summer. He was washed up then, cut by the Cowboys most recently. Bad, bad idea. Then he was hurt and kept trying to kick. Lost the Denver game and the Vikings game with missed kicks and maybe others. But I watched that Vikings game the other night again, and as mad as we all were and still are at him, he felt worse about it than we did. The guy looked suicidal on the sideline and I did feel bad for him. I would have cut his ass right then if I was in charge but I did feel bad for him. I hope he does all right washing cars in Mexico City.
