Another linebacker?
The Rams just released Pisa Tinoisamoa, "a six-year veteran who led the team with 135 tackles in 2008. He was a second-round draft choice, the 43rd overall selection in the 2002 draft. That season, he had 121 tackles to lead the team." -AP via Yahoo! Sports.
Sounds like he can play. Maybe there is a mystery injury? Maybe character issues? Maybe the Rams are just awful and even Martin Gramatica could have led their team in tackles?
Bringing him to training camp could increase the level of competition, and maybe we even end up with a surprise 3rd starting LB (or a strong 4th man to rotate in/take over for Dan Morgan when he goes down)

3-4 possible
if our new DEF is all about changing its look to keep opponents guessing, bring this guy in and put a 3-4 on the field for a couple snaps a game. something like:
Fujita – Vilma – Morgan – Tinoisamoa
Smith – Ellis – Grant
it would be interesting, and lets be honest here…i just want Tinoisamoa on the Saints so i can yell “TINNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!” after a big tackle for loss

Vilma
would hate being stuck in a 3-4 again. As a change of pace, not so bad; but if they’re ever tempted to go to it more than half the time, we’ll have a highly disgruntled star on our hands. Need to keep those star players gruntled.

Yeah no kidding. I think he’d be OK with a change of pace sort of thing tho…

I like it...
But Gregg Willams is a 4-3 guy through and through.

And I think that’s a good thing. The 3-4 isn’t necessarily bad but it’s not the end-all of professional sports either. The Colts and Giants don’t play it and they managed to win a super bowl just fine. And although the Cheatriots do they won mainly by Brady’s arm (and spying on opponents defensive signals) not because their 3-4 was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just because the Pittsfarce Stoolers run it and won their super bowl primarily because of it doesn’t mean everybody and their brother should start picking it up.

Huh?
But Gregg Willams is a 4-3 guy through and through.
Say whhhattt? Gregg has built his entire career on his own mad-scientist brand of the Bear 46, not the 4-3. In base formation, you’d have to call it something like a 4-4-3. Check the CSC archives for the article on Williams right after he was hired, it was outstanding.

Yes... and no...
The 46 is still pretty much a variant on the 4-3 base alignment because both are using the same base front seven in the same 4 DL (DT/DE) and 3 LB alignment. Then the other three are the two corners and the strong safety, with a one-deep alignment for the FS.
So yeah he’s a 46 guy… but that means that he’s a 4-3 guy too.

*sigh*
The 46 does have 4 down linemen (like a 4-3), but the strong safety plays as a 4th linebacker (more like a 3-4). If you have to classify it by just two numbers, it’s a 4-4.
Why not just call it what it is and always has been….a 46.

Not even Buddy Ryan used a 46 exclusively
The Bears played a base 4-3. When Doug Plank came up to fill in as a linebacker, the two outside LBs shifted over to one side, and you had a 46.
As I understand it, Williams doesn’t use a 46 as a base defense—he simply is the only person left who still uses it at all.

Funny....
Your partner Saintsational wrote this lovely article about Gregg and the Bear 46 he’s always used a a base. One of you apparently doesn’t know what he’s talking about; I’ll leave it to you fellas to decide who that is.

Did you miss this part?
“It is more likely that the Saints will use the basic philosophy behind the “46” but in an adjusted version that will probably look more like the traditional 4-3 with lots of different pressure packages."

Doh!
If it’s in that article, I guess I did. My bad; sorry.
I did some Goggling on this subject and came up with a lot of different stuff. I found that same article, in whole or part, in several places, under at least three different titles and authors. Is there plagiarism on the internet?! :-)
A Williams quote from an interview shortly after landing the DC spot at the Jaguars said he would run “Every defense known to man”. A couple of writers say that he’s a “players” coach, not a “plays” coach, meaning he bases everything on the players he has to work with (their abilities, strengths, etc.).
So all in all, I suppose we’ll have only the vaguest idea what he’s really going to run at the Saints until we see it on the field, and then it’s going to change frequently.
This is probably the best thing I found on the Bear 46 itself.

we need another DT...
to run 3-4… I don’t think Sed Ellis is big enough to take on the nose tackle position… I think we should try like hell to trade for Shaun Rodgers!!!

it depends
on how much we would have to pay him. if he want’s a big contract, no. if he’s ok taking a smaller contract then sure, why not. gives some real depth to the linebackers.
Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

Cap Room
How much do we have left to sign the Rookies and other free agents? I heard somewhere that it was only like 6 million. And Jenkins will take up a good bit of that won’t he?

yeah i assume so
but i have this nagging feeling we are going to be losing more players to injuries during these camps and off-season. knock on wood

No he can’t/won’t, because the rookie cap we got for this year was something like 2.5 million or so. He’ll take up a good chunk of THAT of course, but he won’t be able to take up more cap space than that number because our entire rookie class can’t take up more than that.
by FriarBob on May 11, 2009 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So how much total cap room do we have
After we sign the rookies?
by ReggieVilma on May 11, 2009 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
we definitely
need OLB depth. but payton might feel comfortable with the rookies we’ve got, so i’m not holding my breath for a big FA signing
