Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

This afternoon, I take on our own Michael Lombardi as I explain why the New Orleans Saints are soon to be the class of the NFC South — thanks to their defense under new coordinator Gregg Williams. Can he turn New Orleans into a defensive town? I think he can.

Great find

This should be required reading. It’s good to see that someone who played for Williams is excited about the Saints.

The other article in the debate

Here’s Michael Lombardi’s article.

I just don’t think Lombardi has done any real research into Gregg Williams and the Saints in general:

Hiring Gregg Williams will help solve some of their problems on defense. He will improve their fundamentals, keeping their overall defensive scheme reduced and eliminating all the mental mistakes that come with having too much scheme. They will be benefit from adding players like defensive lineman Rod Coleman and Paul Spicer to their defensive line rotation, assuming both players can stay healthy and fill the roles on the sub defense.

Keeping their overall defensive scheme reduced? They had too much scheme under Gary Gibbs? Is he frickin’ kidding me? Matt Bowen (a former player under Williams) paints a totally different picture of Williams’ style. From his perspective, Williams will be throwing everything but the kitchen sink at opposing teams.

Lombardi seems to spend too much time remembering the shortcomings of last season to realize that the 2009 Saints defense will be much different under Williams. He’s so preoccupied with his view that we greatly need a big power back in order to make a serious playoff run. I disagree. By my count, we currently have four players on the roster (Hill, Hamilton, Bell, Donaldson) who could fit the power RB role. Odds are that at least one of these four will prove himself to be a pretty good compliment to PT and Reggie. Plus, we have a FB in Heath Evans that can move the ball too.

Since Bowen actually played under Williams, his perspective carries much more weight. It also helps that he’s basically saying what I’ve long thought this offseason: Gregg Williams will be the most important and potentially helpful acquisition this year.

On a totally different note, where the hell is Stu? Did he finally abandon us for the Chiefs? :-)

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

"too much scheme"

When I think of Gary Gibbs and the issues with that D, “too much scheme” is not one of the things that came to mind.

Yeah, and he also suggests GW's scheme is very simple

which doesn’t seem to jive with his reputation, switching personnel play by play etc.
