RB Lynell Hamilton is a Future Star

For fans who don't know who Lynell Hamilton is and what he brings to our backfield, here's a clip from his college days. He is No.22 for San Diego State. He has the power, size (6'0 235 ibs), Explosivness and speed to cause havoc in the NFL. The only question about him is his durability. He showed the same capabilities in the pre-season of 2008.

I think that he might be a good between the tackles running. He can give us those short third down pickups, but I think that he doesn’t have the speed to be a homerun hitter or even a back that can bounce a run to the outside. As you can see in the video he gets caught from behind every time he has the ball.

agreed

also saw a few plays where the D in the nfl would stop it easy. most noteably the one around the 3 1/2 minute mark where the line is gone and he bounces backwards then outside. nfl linebackers are too fast for him to do that and it would be a 6-8 yard loss

Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

I've seen plenty of those plays broken for big gains

As for the other plays where Hamilton is caught from behind, it looks like a speed issue, not an angle one. He’s caught from behind. On the other hand, he’s caught from behind way the hell downfield.

There’s really not enough here to tell…but remember: Sean Payton sees something in this guy. I think Hamilton is the one he was referring to during the draft, when he said that the Saints’ power back might already be in the building.

Come home, Stuart.

Hamilton

Are you guys looking at the same player, Remember he is No.22 When you’re looking at this clip watch his Legs and feet as he runs, which proves his speed and explosiveness. Yes he is caught on a lot of these plays because the defender has an angle on him. And football is a game of angles. Some of the fastest guys in the NFL have been caught because the slower guy had an angle on him. He reminds me of Terrell Davis (Hall of Fame Running Back for the Denver Broncos) , who many people also said coming out of college was not fast enough. But in the NFL how many people did you see him run past. Focus on his feet and legs as he runs and watch how fast he moves through the whole. If you were watching the right guy, you saw him run through the middle and bounce it to the outside, and he was only caught because the guy had an angle. He is an Explosive powerful runner. Mark my words, if he gets an opportunity to be the third Back and get playing time, He will punish a lot of teams and not just run through and by some linebackers but corners as well.

by BlackKnight on May 14, 2009 3:16 PM CDT reply actions

disagree

Nothing in that clip tells me he is the man.

He was caught from behind not do to angles but due to speed. We dont know how fast the defenders were tho so he might not be slow .

I was more impressed with the running ability of the QB

I saw #22 but at same time saw some other jerseys running that were not. Was he the same player in another uniform with another number?

by SBookerSaintsFan on May 15, 2009 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Overrated??

What has he done since 2005? He wasn’t drafted, he had less than steller years in 06, 07. He had a conservative coach who would prefer to run the ball, a decent QB, but never played hurt.

Nice tape Blacknight though and wish you and your son good luck making the team.

looks like

he was undrafted for a reason. don’t see nothing special but hey, i hope he proves us all wrong.

by D.P.M. on May 14, 2009 9:40 PM CDT reply actions

Positives

I agree with MT on the speed issue. But he did look like he cut pretty well, with some good vision. As long as he does the little things, like pass blocking if Brees decides to pass on 3rd instead, he seems just as justifiable as Herb to be the big back. Anybody know much about Hill. He did come from the biggest school with most competition (though not great), but I havn’t seen enough of him.

by ReggieVilma on May 15, 2009 1:09 AM CDT reply actions

We're looking for a POWER back

He was brought in to be a power back not a scat back. If he had all the speed you people are wanting (combined with his size), he would’ve been a 1st round pick. all this talk of not getting to the edge or gettting caught from behind don’t mean jacksh*t if he’s only trying to get 2-3 yards.

give the guy a break. anybody watching last year’s training camp should know that this kid is going to be good (for our needs). so you might as well get used to the idea of him being are 3rd back. I don’t see Hill or Donaldson beating him out.

*Lynell will be our 3rd back!!! <—-don’t forget where you saw it first.

by Super Dud on May 15, 2009 6:53 AM CDT reply actions

power back

If you saw in the first comment that I made I said that he can be a good back to get the short yards on third down. I made the comment about his speed because the original writer wrote that he suppose to be a speedy. I hope that this kid can help us but in my opinion I think that Donaldson would be the better back. If he can get over his DUI problems. As far as Hill goes if we can bring in two fullbacks he would fit too.

by sainteric on May 15, 2009 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

It's Hill

who has DUI problems.

Come home, Stuart.

My Bad

I got the wrong guy with the DUI. I apologize.

draft status?

since when does draft status mean anything? Didn’t we cut Antonio Pittman a third round pick? Didn’t an undrafted player by the name of Pierre Thomas take his roster spot outright?

Dud has spoken.

by Super Dud on May 15, 2009 6:56 AM CDT reply actions

3RD BACK....

we’re talking about the third back, right? i personally could give two sh*ts who the third back is. as long as he gets the yards that are needed at that time. this guy is no pierre thomas though. don’t fool yourself. like i said before though, i hope he proves me wrong. if he does we will have to put a post on the main page. LYNELL WINS 3RD RB POSITION. SUPER DUD WAS THE FIRST ONE TO TELL THE WORLD!!!!!!

by D.P.M. on May 15, 2009 7:25 AM CDT reply actions

Nothing Special

I didn’t see him do anything that PT hasn’t done. I don’t think this guy is what we are looking for. We really need another Duece. Maybe we can call him the “Trey”.

by Saintsfan132 on May 15, 2009 8:00 AM CDT reply actions

to mr. gooey

you can be sarcastic all you like, but your ignorance toward football is still blatantly obvious. as for the rest of your comments…

Considering the fact that we rarely converted on 3rd and short last year, I’d say the 3rd RB or the POWER back would be fairly important position of concern…no matter how many sh*ts you give.

and for the record i used Pierre Thomas as an example of how “draft status” doesn’t necessarily dictate whether or not you have a quality player. I never even remotely compared him to Hamilton like your post implies.

Dud has spoken.

by Super Dud on May 15, 2009 3:19 PM CDT reply actions

look up the stats

its not that we rarely converted. its just we critically failed on a few that game breakers.

MT

by MT_always on May 16, 2009 9:10 AM CDT up reply actions

game breakers?

ok mr. stats. maybe i should have said, “we rarely converted in obvious running situations with the game on the line.” ? the point is we couldn’t convert when we needed to with our current crop of running backs…and that cost us a couple wins.

and aren’t busted plays (that cost us a game) what we as fans remember most anyway?

Dud has spoken.

by Super Dud on May 18, 2009 7:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Struck a nerve did I?

Let me be the first to apologize if I offended you. Just a little constructive criticism. As I said before though, I hope he proves me wrong.

As far as the power back goes, that’s usually the #2 back. #3 is for injury replacement. IMHO

And for my blatent ignorence towards the game, well………..I’ve forgotten more about this sport than you will ever know. So, let’s just be friends with different opinions. OK?

by D.P.M. on May 15, 2009 3:50 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmm

After watching that I can see why he would be in contention to be a power back but a future star? Hopefully you are right but i think he would be good for short yardage only and a switch of tempo and style of running from PT and Reggie.

by diehardbermysaints on May 15, 2009 5:17 PM CDT reply actions

Mo

I think Hamilton has the inside track to be the #3/short yardage guy. He’s bigger than Bell and has a year on the practice squad under his belt already. He’s gotta stay healthy though, with his injury problems in college following him around.

I did some searching around for stuff on Hamilton’s college career, but I didn’t find much worth sharing. One surprising story was this:

http://www.dailycamera.com/bdc/buffzone_news/article/0,1713,BDC_2448_2631349,00.html

I don’t remember all that, but it speaks well of his home life growing up.

And then there was this one, near the end of his time as an Aztec.

http://cfx.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071019/news_1s19azfoot.html

He’s frustrated and things didn’t go well for him, but he still comes across as a stand-up, team type guy.

I think annoyed would probably be more the word.

I’d hardly call that contsructive criticism, but I accept your apology nonetheless.

I guess I probably owe you an apology as well. Though I highly doubt you have any more football knowledge than me, I shouldn’t assume you’re ignorant simply because we have differing views.

…and you’re right, there’s no need in us bickering. We’re both here for the same reason…our love of the game and more importantly our love of the Saints.

Dud has spoken.

HERE'S THE DEAL

Not sure if anyone is interested but if you want the opinion of an actual ball player and one that has actually played against Hamilton, here it is:

Slow…he’s most definitely not…and that’s coming from a safety who played against him in college. I’ll never forget that game and as embarassing as it was, I always give credit where credit is due and credit is most definitely due Mr. Hamilton. Now I’m not from a powerhouse school but while at Wyoming I played against my fair share of talent. Hamilton was then and still is the best back I’ve gone up against. He wasn’t a Freshman All American and up for Doak Walker ‘04,’05 and ‘06 for no reason. I think he’s going to be exactly what New Orleans needs and from the looks and sound of it, so does Payton. Remember, he’s a big back (6’1/ 235) who (and I just checked web) according to official pro day results, logged a 4.51 40 time. But that’s beside the point, Hamilton is a straight ahead power runner with the ability to break tackles and even carry people with him if need be. He’s what you need for consistent short gain yardage but don’t be surprised if you see him break for a good 35 or 40 yard gain every now and then.

by Diggem on May 20, 2009 12:27 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I’m only guessing, but I think it was two-fold.
A. They thought Deuce would be back healthy, and though he wasn’t 100%, he did a fair job
B. With his back-to-back ankle and knee injuries, they may have felt a full year of rehab with no playing time was the best chance of getting the kid back to what he used to be.

They ran out of backs at the end of the year, but I think they didn’t see much value in plugging Hamilton in for the last game or two, when he was already so close to missing the whole season.
