Vick

Alright. I'm sure y'all are getting tired of seeing Vick all over ESPN today and can't wait for it to go away like me. I personally think he should be allowed back into the league. He served almost two years in prison, which is a lot more than what Pacman had to do to show "reform". But anyway, I was watching ESPN and Mortenson was listing off teams that Vick would be a fit in. And that sun of a gun said the Saints! He said Brees was established enough not to feel threatened, and Vick would be great to pair with Reggie. I nearly hit the ceiling! I don't see how he could be more wrong. He definately won't ever play QB under Sean P, and Reggie needs to be paired with a blocker or pounder (we don't need two Reggies).  The number one offense shouldn't gamble that much on a new scheme, with a running QB/Wildcat. Sean P could tinker and experiment with this using Reggie and not have to commit to a rusty player. I just don't see how that move could benefit us. Do y'all?

ESPN

more and more is becoming the equivalent of the Weekly World News (you know…Bat Boy?). No wait…that would be Fox Sports. Well, maybe all of them.

Michael Vick in a Saints uniform would be enough to make me throw up.

Come home, Stuart...

If he can find a team willing to take the PR hit, let him play.

As for whether he could actually help, well it IS a copycat league. Somebody is going to try to turn him into just what these guys are talking about simply because Miami won a few games on the wildcat’s back last year. But I really don’t think that the Saints are a good fit.

Could they use him? Well sure. Who couldn’t? But are they a good fit and would he really be a help worthy of the PR and financial cost? Not at all.

I'd take him

with the grounds of if I hear 1 peep out him, he’s gone and a league minimum salary

Who would you cut

I'd cut

patrick cowan (for example)

I meant

who on the 53-man roster would you cut? Cowan is a practice squad player at best. Or did you mean Vick should be signed to the practice squad?

Well how about this...

since the 53-man roster hasn’t been set yet, I’ll answer it when it has become set

ESPN isn't alone...

…Peter King has shown that he is still a complete moron:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/05/20/vick/index.html?eref=T1

No freakin’ way Vick ends up in black & gold, why waste a roster spot on a cancer like that, especially when he is absolutely NOT required?

by GSO Saints Fan on May 20, 2009 4:15 PM CDT reply actions

King is a buffoon

Payton wants the ball in Bree’s hands as often as possible. He may play with the wildcat a little bit, but not to the extent of signing a specific player to do it. He isn’t better than any of our receivers either so I don’t see how he would fit in for us at all.

Peter King

I think he just watched ESPN and copied them. The commentators actually said those same teams

Ha!

Daddy told T’Jimmy that Mike was a coach-killer. But, T’Jimmy was so in love with Mike he just couldn’t let him go. Remember how T’Jimmy used to kiss Mikey’s helmet when he came off the field. Nauseating.

Here's the funny thing.

The aftermath from Vick may have been the best thing ever to happen to the Falcons. It put them in position to draft Matt Ryan. That alone means they probably have a franchise QB for years. I don’t think anyone would be terribly surprised if he ended his career as a Hall of Famer. I would rather have Ryan now than Vick in any of his prime years. He was never that great, just exciting. The Falcons would have toiled away as a mediocre team for who knows how long with Vick at the helm. Although, it did seem they were already growing impatient, so maybe he didn’t have much time left anyway.

Vic sucks?

Really?!! Hilarious!

Don't worry I got your back cuz...

by TAYDIGGA on May 21, 2009 2:36 AM CDT reply actions

Yup.

As a quarterback, he stunk up the field, end of story. Never had the necessary mental capacity to make snap decisions and follow through, relied on his (very obvious) natural athleticism to get his butt out of trouble (which is brain got him in), and occassionally did something positive, but within the realm of statistics, he broke even, as you would expect from random chance.

He is indeed a good athlete, despite his raging stupidity (Bankrolling a huge illegal dogfighting business, then denying it existed? Yeah, he’s a candidate for being a Rhodes Scholar, for sure!), and will be useful to some team in some capacity, but any team that hitches their wagon to him being the’re #1 QB is doomed to having very exciting games that they lose slightly more than half the time, leading to an Atlanta Falcons-like level of mediocracy.

I won’t go too far into my personal feelings about Vick as a “human being” (well, that’s stretching the definition of human being, calling him one, IMO), other than to say he got less than I think he deserved (cruelty to animals, and gambling – which has been an absolute no-no in the past, several players have been perma-banned from the NFL for it!) in the way of punishment.

by GSO Saints Fan on May 21, 2009 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Vick always reminded me of a faster Bobby Douglass

Lousy passing quarterback, strong runner whose brain wrote checks his arm couldn’t cash, so his feet bailed him out…some of the time. I think you’re right in your assessment of his football talent.

As for Vick the human being…he’s far from being the worst person on the planet, and maybe not even in the NFL. He was unbelievably cruel to dogs, but I haven’t heard that he’s cruel to humans. How many NFL players are arrested each year for beating their wives and girlfriends?

As for the gambling…as I’ve said before many times, that’s the real crux of this issue—and the reason I don’t think Goodell will reinstate him this year. Running a sports gambling business as a sideline is a big enough no-no that Vick will be lucky to ever be reinstated…but I think the Paul Hornung treatment is probably what he will get. One year’s suspension.

Come home, Stuart...

sorry Tay.

Vic as a passer was a joke to watch, thats why his favorite reciever was a TE.
Vic as a runner was pretty good, but he would never be a starting RB.
Vic the punt returner?

I have the feeling Peter King detests the Saints

he hardly ever has anything positive to say about us (as far as I can remember) and to me sounds like an indirect way of wishing us the worst!
I believe that alone the idea of picking up Vick is absurd and would be dangerous for the integrity of the team. Just MHO

Some SAT Prep

Vick is to QB, as Bush is to RB

Both are phenomanal athletes with an atypical style. Neither works in a traditional system, but could(should) be deadly if used correctly.

We’ve discussed(in depth) how Bush should be used, Vick would also require custom-made system. If you can get one of these players I think it adds tremendous value to your team. I don’t think haveing 2 of these players on a roster is twice as good. I think there’s a limited # of plays you can devote to non-traditional players, and having another would only dilute the effectiveness of Bush.

IMHO, Vick got a very harsh penalty for what he did, and more than paid for his crimes. I think he will be suspended 4 games for lying, which I won’t fault Goodell for. That’ll give him some more time to get back in shape.

by saintsdevotee on May 21, 2009 6:59 AM CDT reply actions

Welcome to the League of Extraordinary Criminals

Vick is not a great quarterback, which is why he has to run so much. He’s just not smart and you have to be smart to be a great QB. This is the same reason that Matt Leinart and Rex Grossman will never be great.

If Vick gets back in the NFL, I never want to hear anyone cry “racism” again. Pete Rose should be reinstated into the HOF. O.J. Simpson, my childhood hero, should be knighted. When I got out, I went looking for a job. Every application had a question: Have you ever been convicted of a crime? Anytime I answered with the truth (ya), I never got the job. Apparently, good character is not a prerequisite for role-models. Goodell is a wimp and the NFL as we knew it is as dead as AM radio.

There is nobody so irritating as someone who is less intelligent than us and yet is wiser.

by Tigernut on May 21, 2009 7:54 AM CDT reply actions

No real need for Vick.

As some have said aready QB dept is covered and he just dosn’t fill any need on this team. Atlanta is going to want some team out there to pay a hefty price for Vicks rights for which the Saints can’t afford to pay. If they’re (Saints) are going to spend money it should be on improving our Defense. Let someone else deal with the Vick distraction. We’ve aready proved we can beat a Vick lead team.

and the stones are casted!!!

I’ll keep my mouth shut as far as judging the guy in regards to anything off the field. But I agree he wasn’t a prolific passer but he could’ve learned to be one perhaps.
