capsule impressions (I watched it on an internet connection originally)

Early 3rd quarter:

Kaesviharn: terrible
Mehlhalf: Missed an extra point and nearly missed several other kicks, what’s wrong with splitting the uprights? Terrible.
Shanle: slow
Campbell: Caught at least 2 passes, 1 for a TD, didn not get hurt, way to go Mark!
Brees: Gold
Biller Miller: workmanlike, steady, reliable
Usama Young: out there trying, may be better at safety
Phil Simms: Minimal annoyance, a big day for Phil
Philip Rivers: frown inducing
Goodell: Can’t stop thinking about all the money to be made
Jim Nance: Jim, I feel I know Pat Summerall and you’re no Pat Summerall
LT2: Playing hurt and playing pretty well, shutdown stiffarm (ask KK)
Saints OL: Great pass protection, praised by Simms
Deuce: Appeared to be his old self if a step slower, got it done
Karney: 1 yd TD run, nice
Lance Moore: dependable and caught everything, but a little too much celebrating after plays. If Devery did that we’d all have our bowels in an uproar.
Devery: Caught them all, but it’s kind of a highlights game so I don’t know how many he dropped, if any.
Rivers: His motion looks like he’s throwing a rock.

Kaesviharn: Jason David took a lot of heat last year, but KK was really, really bad in this game, got lots of cam time after he allowed big plays. The attitude coming out of camp had to be “well, KK is the best of lot, I guess we’re going with him”. I don’t think it’ll be that way in 2009.

Brees: 4th qtr 5:36 Threw a pick intended for Billy Miller who was flagged for interference before the throw. Bad decision. Luckily the defender celebrated on the field which offset Miller’s penalty, so no harm done. Saints had some lucky breaks in this gamefor a change.

Interception was overruled as a trapped ball by Payton’s red flag.

Chargers threatening at 1:22 to go, ball tipped by Shanle and intercepted by Vilma. Philip Rivers scowled as he stomped off the field. That’s a shame.

Drew threw the ball out of the back of the endzone to take a safety, but could have run a few more seconds off the clock if he had tried. Sproles had a nice return on the free kick and Rivers slung that rock down for a failed hail mary as time expired, Saints win 37-32. Shouldn’t have been that close, that was a terrible defense (Chargers DC was fired after the game), should have been 54-30.

Saints have to be able to close in 2009. Need more blowouts, more decisive wins, if we’re going to go deep in the playoffs. I like him a lot, but I don’t know if Shanle should be starting. I hope someone shows in camp that they deserve his spot.

Shanle's done.

I’m still surprised he didn’t got trashed by fans and media after last year. I guess two huge plays can buy you a freebee…

I just hope Morgan can start for the first 6 games and that Arnoux is a very quick learner!

SB minus just a D above average.

I know the one in Denver, that has to be a career high for Shanle

What’s his other one?

He did tip that pass that Vilma picked. But still…

Shanle is occasionally vilified here, but most seem to like his attitude. He’ll turn 30 this year and he’s not getting any faster.

Tiped pass was his second highlight

I can’t believe there isn’t somebody out there who can be better than Shanle. i hope Saints look carefully into that because I’m not very confident Morgan will be able to play a whole season at that spot. Maybe Simoneau? Has he ever played WLB?

yes

Simoneau’s bio on the saints website:

2004 – (At Phil.) Played 14 games, with 13 starts and had 60 tackles (36 solo), 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery…Opened seven of first eight contests at MLB before moving to weakside.

I guess someone who watches the D closely could have said "Yeah he fills in wherever". I'm on an island out here!

rotoworld.com:

Mark Simoneau-LB – Saints Sep. 12 2008 – 2:41 pm et
Saints placed LB Mark Simoneau (back) on injured reserve, ending his season.
He was the team’s top reserve at all three linebacker spots, so New Orleans had better hope no guys in front of him go down for an extended period. Simoneau needs surgery on his back.
