Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

"In terms of people calling [and requesting a tryout], the phone never rings," said Brooks, who operates a real estate development firm and is involved in charitable endeavors in Virginia. "Never. I guess I'm still active, but I'm not really active. I try to stay in shape in case [a chance] ever does come along ... but it never does. My agent is still making calls and talking to teams about me. But nothing happens."

Awww...I kinda feel bad for the guy.

Eh...no I don't.

I feel for him

As frustrating as he was those last few years, he did have his moments at time. I still have fond memories of when he stepped in for the injured Jeff Blake and totally shocked the world by defeating the SB champion Rams in primetime, if my memory is correct. I’d like to see him get another shot. That 2006 stint for the Raiders was a complete lose-lose situation for him. No QB could have survived in that situation. The 2005 season was also a lose-lose situation. Not even Joe Montana in his prime could have done much better after being displaced and forced to play, train, and practice on the road for a complete season. He shouldn’t be judged on his last two seasons.

His main problem was his incredible inconsistency. When he was on, he played very well. When he was off, he was atrocious. From game to game, he was like a box of chocolates—you never knew what you were going to get. All those clueless smiles after bad plays has ruined him in the eyes of most Saints fans. Having Drew Brees step in after him to impress the pants off everyone in the league probably doesn’t help either.

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

yeah, but even in his best QB rating statistical year when he threw only 8 interceptions (2002), he had 11 fumbles, losing 9 of them

It was a total roller coaster with him – too many highs and lows from game to game, and even play-to-play sometimes.

Brooks' problem

was the same as his cousin Michael Vick’s: he just wasn’t smart enough. His brain couldn’t work quickly enough, and in a crisis—of which there are quite a few in the course of a game—he made the wrong decision as often as he made the right one.

He certainly doesn’t deserve to be remembered the same way we remember Heath Schuler (my congressman), for instance; but I don’t miss him, either.

Come home, Stuart...

Brains not working quickly

is about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard but ok your a Dr. I guess. Satch hit it right, inconsistent play, (and some of that you might want to blame on Haslet), but he did take us further in the playoffs then Heath Schuler (who made the top 10 draft bust list) did, who stunk. Sure hope he’s a better congressman, you need a quick brain there too.

I agree with M.E.

Some people can keep their cool, process info, make a good decision and not freak out when there are threats all around them. He couldn’t do that on a consistent basis. It’s just how some people’s brains are wired. I don’t think it’s dumb to say that.

Drew on the other hand…

I often argued here on this blog that Robert Meachem has the same problem…a problem between the ears. It’s good to see Meachem having a succesful offseason so far though. I hope I’m proved wrong about him, but I digress…

Active Roster QBs that AB is better than

The thing that stumps me about the NFL is their ability to completely write off guys who would be better options as a backup than what they already have. I left a few guys who AB is probably better than but not by a whole lot. Regardless of your feelings for Brooks, you have to admit that he has some talent. This is a guy with a playoff win on his resume and can’t get a sniff while these quarterbacks are currently cashing NFL paychecks

Brock Berlin (STL)
Todd Bouman (JAC)
Charlie Frye (SEA)
Bruce Gradkowski (OAK)
Cleo Lemon (JAC)
Dan Orlovsky (HOU)
Tyler Palko (ARZ)
Chris Redman (ATL)
DJ Shockley (ATL)
