CSC All-Time Saints Team: Wide Receiver No. 1
It's time now to vote for the first member to be elected to our CSC All-Time Saints team. If you missed the nomination post and introduction from yesterday you can catch it right here.
Based on suggestions made yesterday in the comments section we have added Donte Stallworth and Wes Chandler. Don't forget also that there will be a separate election for the second wide receiver spot in the near future. The polls will be open for exactly 48 hours which means they will close at 6am on Monday, June 1st. You only get one vote so make it count. You can make a difference. If you've never voted in a CSC poll to date, now is the perfect time to start. Be sure to tell everyone you know to come on over and vote as well.
As always, the comment section is open for more discussion about these great players and the way things used to be.

Joe Horn
Eric Martin is a close second but my vote goes to Joe Horn. Just a few hundred yards shy of Martin in 2 less seasons. Always gave 100 percent. Yes his “swagger” got old at times but his play and numbers don’t lie.
What really made me turn the corner for Horn was his actions directly after Katrina. When it was obvious the organization and others were conspiring to possibly move the Saints, Joe was one of the first ones to stand up and say that it was our duty to return to New Orleans. His ability to “be vocal, and outspoken” was needed during this time of incertainty.
He gave his unwavering support to the city after Katrina and wanted to return immediately. For that I will always be grateful.

Esge to Martin
over Horn, because Martin played with a higher degree of difficulty (Carl Smith), and I’m a little partial to players I grew up watching…

Does no one remember the whole....
Joe Horn sleeping with the offensive line’s wives story. I was pretty sure it was WIllie Roaf’s as the story goes. I’m going hunting to find some verification. Does anyone remember that?

I found this
It’s from Slate.com. The whole thing can be found here http://www.slate.com/id/2111295/
Here is the part that references the aforementioned post
At the end of the 2000 season, every New Orleanian and their mother (that includes my typically sports-averse mother) buzzed that Saints wide receiver Joe Horn had impregnated teammate Willie Roaf’s wife. The rumor spread so widely that, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, 49ers coach Steve Mariucci asked Saints coach Jim Haslett about the Horn and Roaf tittle-tattle during a postgame handshake. After a few months of silence, Roaf scuttled the rumors by telling the Times-Picayune that he was his daughter’s real father. Horn confirmed Roaf’s declaration. “We make mistakes sometimes,” Horn told ESPN, “but that is one mistake Joe Horn did not make. I did not sleep with Willie Roaf’s wife.” After Roaf punctured the rumor, the Times-Picayune’s Dave Lagarde wrote that a gaggle of readers had accused him and the paper of covering up the affair.

Joe Horn over Danny Abramawicz and Eric Martin - Yikes!!
Very disappointing!! Clearly, most of the voters never saw a Saints game before the late ’80’s, early 90’s.
One question for anyone that has voted for Joe Horn:
Is there any Saint player you would seriously consider the best Saint ever at their position that played before 1987? Remember, that is 20 years of players (1967- 1986)??
If very few of the Joe Horn voters can vote for any Saint’s player (pre-’87), we clearly have a flawed system unfolding here. Guess us oldies have to view this event like a bad call by a ref — you just have to allow human nature to be part of the game and move on!!
But have no doubt, Joe Horn doesn’t even live in the same “area code” as either Danny Abramowicz or Eric Martin’s careers as the best Saints receivers ever!!!

BOOM!!!
Amen brother. Most fans are not life-long followers. They think going back and picking Horn or Colston is a stretch on there memory strings. I’m just glad Dave has brought out this discussion so we can look back. Thanks Dave.

Dag-nabbit
This is what happens every time there is a “best of” poll. Just like how the 2005 USC team was picked as the best ever by ESPN viewers before even playing their bowl game (over Nebraska of the 90s, OU of the 80s, Texas of the 60s, …). Ludacris, but younger viewers have no frame of reference. It is what it is. I wasn’t going to pick Abramawicz, even though I’m aware of his stats and accomplishments, because I didn’t really wee him play.
P.S. Anyone remember whatever happened to that 2005 USC team?

is that Stallworth has 4 votes. FOUR! Those must be gag votes, right?

I think that they are “Pick a fight” votes.

Maybe we need to break this down and do a Benson Saints All-time team (1986-current) and a Mecom Saints All-Time team (1967-1985)
I voted Joe Horn #1 and had planned to vote Eric Martin #2, just on a career statistical basis.
But, I would have Abramowicz as a strong #3 (and he’d see much time on the field in Payton’s offense). I’m glad to hear from Dempsey about seeing Abramowicz in games. I can only do that about folks from the late 70’s – current.
And isn’t that interesting that we haven’t had anyone do really well at receiver for us for more than 3-4 years at a atretch?
Also of note – the fumbles. I had no idea Martin fumbled that many times, but I don’t remember watching him and thinking…“Man, he needs to hang on to the ball better! He fumbles all the time!”
This is a tough question and will be so at each position. Beyond straight up stats, there are the intangibles – timing, leadership, etc. And the game changes over time in both style (west coast offense) and substance (rule changes and 3 games per season, etc.).

um, that's supposed to read "# games per season" instead of "3 games per season"
Why don’t I ever preview my comments?

God Bless Danny Abramowicz
He was the classic over-acheiver, and one of this town’s all-time favorites. Too bad his ill-qualified run as Ditka’s OC overshadows his career.
I don’t ever recall him dropping a pass. He was a fine receiver on some awful teams, but he only played 5 solid years and was basically finished by age 28. Eric Martin was the same type of possession receiver, but much better all around. Finally, though, Joe Horn was the Saints’ best receiver – the only gripe with Joe Horn I have is that he dropped too many passes. We’ll have to see with Colston.
Keep in mind that the pre-1987 teams were at best mediocre, usually lousy. Also, particularly on offense, it’s such a different game today, it’s tough to compare today’s players with the pre-1980 players.
And I’ve seen every Saints’ game ever played.
For the guy who went on earlier about Horn slamming Saints’ fans after Katrina, here is what was actually reported in the TP on 18 October 2006. I don’t see how this can be interpreted as being negative against Saints’ fans, just negative about the whole Baton Rouge fiasco:
“I’m still not over leaving New Orleans yet
so I can’t put myself in that mode," wide receiver
Joe Horn said. "I’d rather stay in New
Orleans. That’s my home. Texas is a wonderful
place and they’ve treated us beyond great. But
New Orleans is home and that’s where we
want to be. But we have no control over that."
"We’d rather play our home games here
without a doubt because San Antonio wants us
and the fans are supporting us," Horn said.
"But if they don’t want us in Baton Rouge,
then I don’t want to play there. If they would
welcome us with open arms like some of the
people in San Antonio are doing, that’d be
great. But, in the long term, I want to go back
to New Orleans."
