Peter King gives Drew his Props

Drewbrees_medium

via i211.photobucket.com

I know I suggested last week that we should probably ignore Peter King, but then he went and posted an ARTICLE giving Drew Brees his props for an outstanding run here in NOLA. It's Drew's quotes below that most interest me:

Give Drew Brees his props. In the 89-year history of the National Football League, only one player has thrown for more yards in a three-year period than Brees has thrown for in his last three years. This is Drew Brees we're talking about, not any of the very famous quarterbacks I'm going to show you in this chart. Here are the best three-year runs for the modern legends, and near-legends, of our day, ranked by passing yards:

Player Years Pass Yards TD-Int W-L
Dan Marino 1984-86 13,967 122-61 34-14
Drew Brees 2006-08
13,910 88-46 25-23
Peyton Manning 2004-06
13,024 105-39 34-14
Warren Moon 1989-91 13,010 79-48 28-19
Kurt Warner 1999-01 12,612 98-53 35-8
Tom Brady 2005-07 12,445 100-34 38-10
Brett Favre 1997-99 12,170 88-62 32-16
John Elway 1993-95 11,490 67-34 24-24
Jim Kelly 1991-93 10,683 74-54 36-11

"It's just numbers,'' Brees said when I told him about this gaudy list Friday. "It's not a very big deal. To be mentioned in the same breath with Marino, Elway and all those guys is a great honor. Wow. But in the grand scheme of things, we don't have the ring. One of the reasons nobody would know about those numbers is, look at our record. [The Saints are 25-23 in that period.] Marino won more; I bet he was in the playoffs every year of those three years. We've made 'em once. Peyton's been in the playoffs a lot. Favre has. So winning's a big part of it. If you have numbers without the winning, it doesn't matter.''

He's right, but there's something about Brees over the last three years that I find amazing. Remember when he messed up his shoulder late in his last game at San Diego in 2005? Miami shied away from giving him the big money because Nick Saban was worried about the shoulder being whole in training camp. The Saints had faith and gave him six years for $60 million, and Brees has done everything he can to pay back Sean Payton and GM Mickey Loomis for believing in him when other teams wouldn't. He and Payton are a great match, and Brees knows it. "I've been given one of the best opportunities of anyone in football, and I'm loving every minute of it,'' he said.

Way to get me and possibly other Saints fans to listen to you again, Pete. Post an article praising our QB for the phenomenal player and leader he surely is. I really like that Drew doesn't give any real importance to his passing yard totals. Like he said, it's all about getting the ring. In case anyone might have missed the "Sports Science" video of Drew's incredible passing accuracy first posted about two months ago, you can find it below:

Also interesting to me (and maybe me alone) is Pete's speculation that Matt Stafford will become the Lion's starter sooner rather than later. Could he face the Saints in week one? Probably not, but I'd love to see how Gregg Williams' defense would welcome him into the NFL. You know the Saints won't really show what they're going to do on defense until week one of the regular season. How will the Lions' offense prepare for that?

It's beginning to look a lot like Stafford. "The last mini-camp in June, we're going to have an arms race,'' said Detroit coach Jim Schwartz. Between Daunte Culpepper and No. 1 draft pick Matthew Stafford. From the sounds of Schwartz, Culpepper needs to be really, really good to hold off the hard-charging kid.

Is it the right decision? We'll see. I've thought all along the Lions should let Culpepper take the body blows of the early season schedule (at blitzing New Orleans, followed by Minnesota and Washington at home, Chicago on the road, then Pittsburgh at home). Those are some aggressive defensive coordinators licking their chops waiting to play the rookie. I've thought for that reason plus the hazards of playing a kid, let Stafford sit, well-padded and protected, while learning. Doesn't sound like the way the Lions are thinking. If Stafford's clearly the best man, he'll play the opener.

"We've got two criteria for when Matthew will play,'' said Schwartz. "One is he'll play when he's ready. The second is when he's the best quarterback for us. But so far, whatever the opposite of buyers' remorse is, that's what we have. We knew he had the terrific NFL arm. But we've found out his release is just textbook classic.''

On a different note, I like this redesigned Post Editor. Thanks SB Nation! There's a slight learning curve involved, but it seems easier than the previous Post Editor.

Poll
Will Matt Stafford be the Lions' QB in week one against the Saints?
Yes. He'll be their best QB option.

No way. They won't start him on the road against a pressuring defense that will be difficult to prepare for.

I thought the same thing

…and that’s why I didn’t link to this column earlier today. But there were several Saints mentions that were interesting: Drew’s stats was one; another was King’s description of our defense: “blitzing New Orleans.” Apparently news of the Williams hire is starting to percolate upwards. Nationally syndicated journalists are already taking it as a given that our defense is going to blitz you heavily and be difficult to deal with. Is the reality finally sinking in? Will the hating stop?

Another interesting snippet: he cautions Reggie Bush that his fling with Kim may not be permanent. What’s his reason? That’s she’s already picked out her engagement ring…before he proposed. Well…doesn’t that make it sound like she’s serious about it being permanent? Why warn Reggie? Apparently, it’s Kim who needs the caution.

On a different note, apparently there’s some sort of bug in the editor, since it’s printing material that should be commented out (the “tablemaker” comments).

Yeah, I couldn't figure out how to remove that.

Maybe they’re still working out the kinks. I like the new “autotagging” feature.

I don’t get the Kim/Reggie engagement ring thing. Pete doesn’t explain what he’s referring to. He only suggests we Google it. This is all I could find:

Kim Kardashian is rumored to be engaged to New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush and she is sporting a 7 carat diamond on her finger. The only problem with it is that it is on her right hand instead of her left – which is standard for an engagement ring. Now you have to ask yourself would she has a ring on that looks like an engagement ring to play with the press, was the ring the wrong size, or is she starting a new trend among reality stars? Stay tuned for more news on this possible soon to be married lady.

It sounds like much ado about nothing. I don’t know why Pete brings it up. It seems like something best left to the tabloids.

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

She's wearing it on her right hand until Reggie proposes

Until then, it’s just a ring. When he proposes, she’ll switch it to her left. That’s my guess, anyway.

Deciding to wear the ring on her right hand now doesn’t strike me as particularly strange…not nearly so strange as going out and buying it before Reggie has made his intentions clear. I mean, she may be hot and sexy (his opinion, not mine)…but does she really have much of an income? Or will she be a drain on his finances for the rest of his life? Most men would think more than twice….and Kim ought to be aware of that.

Then there’s the whole “I’m his good luck charm” bit. Seems to me Reggie hasn’t had any luck at all in the NFL. He’s busted his butt and played well on the whole…but luck? I haven’t seen any. Maybe if Kim went away Reggie would stay healthy, he’d start finding bigger holes, and he’d end the year with double thousands. Just sayin’.

find a bigger whole than her?

Ok that was wrong, but funny. Just for clarity Mtn, you DON’T think she is hot?

I wasn't going to go there, but

…no, I don’t think she’s hot. I think she’s slutty. Like Paris Hilton. I don’t find that a turn-on.

This is OUR year!

while slutty....

still hot in my book. but I’m not a Paris fan either. If Paris wasn’t slutted up I don’t think she’d be hot, but if Kim wasn’t “slutted up” I think she’d still be hot.

I like the technical term "slutted up".

And I also like your position analysis on the two players:

Paris – hot because she looks easy

Kim – hot because she is

Both – high slut factor

Do you know what it means...

John Clayton is now expecting a better Saints D also.

Sounds like the major MSM pundits just got the Gregg Williams memo or are now at least starting to see the possibility for good things. I don’t remember seeing John Clayton give such a positive analysis for the new defense:

Q: As a Saints fan, there is nothing was more hurtful than seeing a great offense cut down by an awful defense. Will things be different this year?
Tomaso in Florence, Italy

A: There is no doubt the defense will be better. The question is how much better. New defensive coordinator Gregg Williams brings an aggressive approach to the scheme. He’ll blitz. He’ll play some Cover 4. He always seems to do a great job of getting the most out of his defensive tackles, which should be good for Sedrick Ellis. I still worry about how a bad start could affect the psyche of New Orleans’ defensive players. The Saints should have no trouble with Detroit in the opener. I worry about the next three games, knowing that Charles Grant and Will Smith will be serving four-game suspensions to start the season. As long as the Saints come out at least 2-2 and show some improvement on defense, all should be fine.

NICE! A Saints fan in Italy.

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Is that true?

That’s just stupid.

What's stupid?

What she’s doing, or my guess as to why? (And it’s just a guess…I don’t really keep up with the Kardashians.)

I think he was referring to what she's doing.

And I agree. If I were Reggie, her pressure to marry would turn me off. Of course, after getting turned off I’d look at her awesome bod and immediately get turned on again. It’s a Catch 22.

Go Saints!!!! Deuce may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

C'mon, Men!

Are you serious? Are you actually wasting our time with talk about an engagement ring? Who gives a crap about what ring Kim gets?

There’s only one ring I’M interested in.

There is nobody so irritating as someone who is less intelligent than us and yet is wiser.
