Saints Backup QBs

OK fellas,  I must admit, I posted a pretty obvious poll a couple of weeks ago asking who is the Most Valuable Saint with Deuce gone.  Most of you voted (and I see your point) D Brees, hands down.  Now I'm not even going poll this time, I'm asking a curiosity question that I believe I know the answer to:  What are our prospects of making it to the playoffs if (GOD forbid) Brees gets injured?

Star-divide

Does Harrington / Brunell have what it takes to get the ball in at least the local vicinity of some very talented recievers who are more than capable of snatching it up?  I'm unfortunately outside of the Crescent City area and subscribed to DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket for the first time last year.  So I was able to watch my peeps play consistently every Sunday for the first time in ages.  Needless to say, I haven't seen the backups play.  I believe Brunell came from this dreaded DC area.

I am very comfortable with Brunell

He still has what it takes to be a starter. In my opinion.

I’m comfortable with Brunell too.

And while everybody “knows” Harrington is a major bust, it doesn’t help to have a line that can’t pass protect for more than three microseconds (see Carr, David). He didn’t get to be a top pick because he was handsome. The guy has athletic ability, but does he have any confidence left? If so, he’s got at least a small chance to bounce back. If not, see Carr, David, Carolina 2007.

Of course any Saint fan with an ounce of sense still hopes they never have to see either of these guys.

Brunell will be OK

I agree with friarbob about Harrington. I have seen glimpses of hope with him in the past. Also, Sean Paytons play calling helps also. Brees had descent stats in San Diego, but he averages 1200 more yds a year under Payton. That is something to consider. I also do credit our OL for protection, but Brees is also has made the correct decisions to avoid a lot of sacks. My 2 cents

Hope we never

get to see Brunell play, (knock on wood-u know why) other than a mop-up role or pre-season, I’m OK w/him as back-up on experience alone, Harrington -meh , he’s a warm body and Payton will take him over Tyler Palko. Our D was 26th or something overall last yr., if GW gets’em down around 10th-13th,we’ll have a great 09….

You think you know, and you don't know, and you never, ever will know..Jim Mora Sr.

In Mark we trust

while he’s not Drew, he’s experienced and makes good decisions. I think he would suprise the hell out of everyone. I’m a little partial to be honest. I loved what he did in J’ville a few years ago. You know I think they only lost three games that year, all three to Tennesse.

capable

i feel we have very capable backups if brees went down. brunell i think would be a kerry collins only a little better. i always felt like harrington was a pretty decent qb. not pro-bowl calliber but good enough to be a 2nd string backup or starter on a horrible team.

Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

He WAS a starter on a horrible team

…and it wasn’t pretty.

This is OUR year!

I agree

both would be capable backups and Brunell would probably be better. Harrington is an enigma since he was on such a bad team… he had virtually zero chance of excelling in Detroit.

In the even that Brees were to go down ...

would Jammal Brown be shifted back to RT to protect Brunell’s blindside? He seems better suited on that side anyway, imo. This question was even more paramount when Tyler Palko (another lefty) was the 3rd string QB. On a related note, I remember watching both Brunell and Palko in the preseason and wondering why they didn’t run more formations with the TE lined up on the left, when they were in the game. Shouldn’t you be taking the same approach to those situations as you would in a regular season game? What sense does it make to have them throwing across their body, in terms of preparation and/or player evaluation? Would Sean Payton not make that rather obvious adjustment, if the chips were on the table? Just thinking out loud.

Well Joey was solid for the Falcons, he definitely wasn't the reason they lost all those games. not a lot of touches but he had a good completion %

So I trust Joey a little bit more over Mark. Nothing against Mark, I could just see him taking a hard hit and not getting back up

From what i've seen

Brunell and harrington can’t hit the broad side of a barn much less start for the saints if Brees gets injured
