CSC All-Time Saints Team Election: Defensive End No. 1
It's time now to vote for another member to be elected to our CSC All-Time Saints team. If you missed the defensive end nomination post yesterday you can catch it right here.
Based on suggestions made yesterday in the comments section we have added Bob Pollard and Bruce Clark. Don't forget also that there will be a separate election for the second defensive end spot in the near future. The polls will be open for exactly 48 hours which means they will close at 6am on Friday, June 5th. You only get one vote so make it count. You can make a difference. If you've never voted in a CSC poll to date, now is the perfect time to start. Be sure to tell everyone you know to come on over and vote as well.
As always, the comment section is open for more discussion about these great players and the way things used to be

Charles Grant
16 career forced fumbles, most by any Saints DE. 41.5 career sacks in 102 games. That’s a better sack/game average than Warren, Wilks or Clark and practically identical to Turnbull’s numbers. I realize he’s been inconsistent the last couple of years, but let’s not lose sight of what Grant has accomplished while a member of this franchise. He’s one of the few Saints players I can honestly say didn’t tank it during the dismal 2005 season, along with Donte Stallworth. If current players were automatically being excluded, I could more easily buy into his omission. With Marques Colston among the WR nominees, that’s obviously not the case.
Keep your head up, Chuck. Despite your recent struggles on and off the field, you’re still a leader on this team and — as evidenced by the preliminary results of this survey — your legacy is not yet etched in stone. As a long time Saints fan, I appreciate the enthusiasm you bring to the game and sincerely hope you bounce back from your (pending) suspension with a season that proves each and every one of your critics wrong.

saints D
it seems so long ago, but the defense is why i became a saints fan. guys like joe johnson & sam mills would play their heart out game after game with little to no offensive help. now we have the top offense in the league and, at times, its hard to find any heart on the other side of the ball. 98% of our defensive heart comes from our undersized LBs. with or without those 4 game suspensions this year, we need something BIG from our big boys on the D-line

Turnbull was a bust
we held onto that guy for too long.

I was sooo excited when we drafted him...
but he wasn’t really all that good except for that one year with 13.5 sacks

bro, you are not alone in that.
I thought this guy was the key to everything and was just waiting for him to turn the corner. And then I waited, and waited, and waited, and forgot I was waiting it took so long, and then they cut him or something.
I now feel the same way about Meachum.
I miss the old Saints D.

oh no, Dave
I think I just accidentally voted twice for Wayne Martin. Is there any way you can check?

Absolutely no way
that Turnbull should get more votes that Wilks, Warren or Clark. Indefensible. Inexcusable…
Ditto for Darren Howard

Having watched Wayne Marting play,
I can only say he’s the best player we’ve ever had at that position, numbers aside. I can understand the case for Grant with the numbers and sacks per game ratio but, seeing first-hand the motor and heart that Wayne Martin played with for so long, it can only be him if we’re only getting to choose one player at this position.

I agree with you
I voted for Martin and would have even if Grant had been one of the options. I just think Grant should be up there. He’s just as worthy of being an option as most, is all I’m saying. Oh and it’s Darren Howard that leads the entire lot of them in sacks per game, averaging over 1/2 sack a contest during his tenure with the Black & Gold.

Enjoyed Howard
I really liked what Howard brought to the D-line. He was a force to be reckoned with and the O-coordinators of the other teams had to game-plan for him. Hated to see him go and really hated that you never heard from him again as age and injuries took their toll on him.

"It's like throwing over a tree."
Quote from one of Martin’s coaches (in reference to what opposing QBs feel like when they see him coming at them) that appeared on the back of his Score rookie card.

Martin was a beast! but Grant is a Monster with braids
Wayne martin was incredible, but how much of that went to the other main contributors in the 90’s? he was just one cog in the laroi glover, mark fields, sammyknight ditka blitz every down scheme, so much talent wayne drew one on one blocks bc the oline had to address the other 3 maniacs on the field! he did have the motor for daze and an accute ability to hone in and bag the sack. he definitely deserves the 1st honors, but think if you will who has grant had in those 102 games he posted consistent numbers? will smith, is all that can come to mind for the early days and thats what makes charles the beast that he is! hes been doin this shit with double blocks and no dt support. grant will come back after his 4 game suspension and seriously wreak havok with ellis in year 2 and vilma playing like superman(thanks pking). he just might make up for the lost time at the end of his playing days. how many extra votes if i said he will retire black and gold someday?
