Fascinating article on which analysts the players like
Short version: not Tiki Barber. Not the too-clever non-players (Keith Olberman?). And not Mel Kiper.

Olberman is a far more dedicated liberal media hack than sports commentator anyway. He does have that “I work for ESPN” demeanor about him though. And Tiki on the Today Show should have erased any tough guy credibility he could have ever had.

I like Tom Jackson quite a bit. He disappeared for a while…or at least it seemed like he did. But he’s one of the best. I do not like Berman and Jackson is always with Berman. Berman has too many gimmicks. That was fun for a while but it wears you down. Howie Long is pretty good. I like Bradshaw despite the lame image he projects. Bradshaw is able to be funny and still get some information into his interviews. And he’s amazing on that short segment when they catch you up on happenings around the league at half time.

My two favorites
Are Troy Aikman and Solomon Wilcots. Both are extremely knowledgeable, well-spoken and above all else, OBJECTIVE.
The absolute worst are Emmitt Smith< /a> (his “Rice of Patches” bit still cracks me up) and Randy Cross, who can pretty much turn any topic into a story about when he was with the 49ers.

Olberman back in the day was great!
I couldn’t care less about his political stance in this arena (football) but even then he knows his stuff and that’s all that matters. Say whatever you will but back it up by what you know and you don’t have to be a player to know how to analyze because some of these former players are horrible at analyzing.
Don't worry I got your back cuz...

I honestly miss
Dennis Miller on MNF. I know he wasn’t too popular, but I think it was more a case of his brand of humor being too cerebral for the general viewing audience.
I remember laughing like a hyena during a preseason game he did, when we played the Patriots at Foxboro. New England had a couple of free agent WRs trying to make the team that year. One of them caught a short out route for like 2 or 3 yards. Without missing a beat, Miller quipped “and with that catch, Shockmain Davis becomes the NFL’s all-time leading receiver … among players named Shockmain”.
Sorry, guess you had to be there.

Yeah, he was alright by me
He didn’t have the poetic cadence of Cosell, but he made the commenting on MNF entertaining for a while,in more ways than just listening to Madden’s mind erode in real time.

Yeah
I respect the hell out of John Madden, but he’s a bottomless barrel of cliches in the booth. He should have devoted all of that rambling time towards bringing his video game franchise up to ESPN 2K5 visual standards.

I don't know
if there was sarcasm there, but EA’s buying the exclusive NFL rights ruined pro football video games. The 2K series was better than Madden for a while, and stiff competition even when it wasn’t. A lack of competition has made the Madden franchise not care about improving product standards from year to year.

No sarcasm at all
I prefer the 2K series to anything Madden ever put out. I still play 2K5 quite often and have every NFL roster pretty much up to date with created players through the ’08 season.
