CSC All-Time Saints Team Nominations: Cornerback No. 1

It's all-time Saints team time again! Today we're talking about cornerbacks of Saints past. Below is a list of players I've researched and deemed worthy of inclusion in our discussion of great Saints cornerbacks. As usual I will leave it up to you guys, the readers, to nominate any other players you feel should be included.

The poll will open at 6am Central tomorrow morning and will be open for exactly 48 hours, ending on Friday, July 10th.

I now open it up for any other nominations or players that you just can't believe I missed. There very well may be a glaring omission. Talk it out in the comment section. I would also love to hear some personal rumination from our readers who've actually watched these guys plays. Being relatively new to Who Dat Nation, I haven't had the opportunity to see too many talented cornerbacks.

omissions

Eric Allen – Without a doubt, the best CB we’ve ever had. 54 career INTs, 6 Pro Bowls, one with the Saints. He’ll always be better remembered as an Eagle, but will likely someday represent both teams in the HOF.

Dave Waymer – Started the vast majority of his career at CB, before switching to FS in his final year with the team. One time Pro Bowler with 48 career INTs. He is the Saints’ all-time INT leader with 37 and simply cannot be left off this list.

Robert Massey – One of the best pure cover CBs we’ve ever had. Deserves to be on the list from a skills standpoint. Made the Pro Bowl as a Cardinal. His 5 INTs as a rookie is still a Saints franchise record.

Ashley Ambrose – New Orleans native and one time Pro Bowler with the Bengals who played three seasons for the Saints, in two separate tenures. Returned two INTs for TDs while with the team. Had 42 INTs total during his lengthy NFL career.

Carl Lee – Three time Pro Bowler as a long time Viking. Only played one season as a Saint, yet still managed to pick off two and recover a fumble. His 31 career INTs are what stand out most.

Toi Cook – Played seven seasons for the Saints, including all four playoff campaigns under Mora. Often lauded for his heady play, baiting QBs into throwing in his direction. Not exceptionally fast however, making him subceptible to getting torched in man-on-man coverage. Returned two of his 20 INTs with the team for TDs.

Vince Buck – Also played during the glory years of the Mora era. Not super productive for a first rounder, but not someone I’d label a bust. He did return one interception for a TD in 1992 and his return of a blocked FG in the Bears playoff game could have been one of the biggest in franchise history, had it not been called back.

Alex Molden – Infamously selected over Eddie George. In the same ballpark as Buck, in terms of living up to his first round billing. He was still a steady performer (by Saints standards) throughout the Ditka era, as well as a part of the overachieving 2000 secondary that managed to weather the Kurt Warner storm for the team’s first ever playoff win.

Clarence Chapman – best CB on the team throughout the Nolan regime, which probably isn’t saying much.

Reggie Sutton – Wildcard nominee. Sutton had 8 INTs in just 26 career games with the Saints, as well as two blocked FGs and a blocked punt during 1987’s remarkable nine game winning streak. He could have easily gone on to be a perennial All-Pro, but succumbed to a cocaine habit and was out of pro football two years later.

Good list

I’d not imagined Alex Molden getting a mention, but as far as Saints CB’s go, serviceable has always gotten the nod for PT…

Missing CB's

Gotta make sure that you include Eric Allen, Toi Cook and what about Freeway Fred Thomas.!

do we have to pick one?

Honestly, I think I’d have to pick McKenzie. He’s the only one who played with us for any length of time that is unpolluted in my mind by numerous s%$^! plays.

Add these two

Yeah, what about Dave Waymer and Toi Cook?
