Deke: Saints lose 1 LB and bring in 2 more
No news here we don't already know. Just wanted to point out how pathetic this short article was. First of all, they spelled Mark Simoneau's name with an "x" at the end, making him more cajun than he really is. Second, the title of this article would have you believe the Saints are bringing in two more linebackers, which is not actually the case. I cannot believe people get paid for this and here I am doing this is a hobby. Jebus.

Wait a minute
The Times-Pic is saying Derek Smith is a linebacker. I’m currently trying to investigate that. I think they might have made a mistake. Someone call Derek and ask him what position he plays. :)

Confirmed
Derek Smith is a linebacker not a tight end, unless he plays both. At least that what Wikipedia says:
Derek Mecham Smith (born January 18, 1975 in American Fork, Utah) is an American football linebacker for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft. He played college football at Arizona State.
Smith has also played for the San Francisco 49ers, San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins.

There's two different Derek Smiths
It looks like the Saints are bringing in the LB Smith.

Gotta be the guy
He was with the Redskins when Williams was there.

I only see one Derek Smith. We need to look at another Derek Smith because this one ain't making it.
He’s more done than either Campbell.

Why do we bring in players who suck?
Or pay old players? I’d rather take a chance on an undrafted rookie FA.

Can't argue with that
I know NFL experience probably factors into these decisions, but this guy Smith has barely played in the past two years.

Dave, you are FAR AND AWAY BETTER than the people who are getting paid for this.
But Simoneaux >>>>>> Simoneau. Let’s face it.

There's also a TE Derek Smith
from Kentucky, who has played for the Colts, Rams and Bengals. Still unclear as to which one the Saints brought in, though I doubt it matters. I don’t think either would crack the final 53.

Derek Smith LB,
has had decent productivity in GW’s system. He seems though to be a perennial bookmark- losing his spot in the starting line-up to rookie phenoms (most lately Patrick Willis in SF). But don’t discount familularity with GW and his system to help his chances of edging out Brooks.

There is only one Derek Smith who has played in the NFL since 2000 and he's the one
SF in 2007, that’s a long time ago. He’s 34 years OLD!!

Stu's right
It’s definitely Derek Smith the LB cause Payton said so in his brief press conference. It makes sense that it would be a guy who’s worked under GW in the past. I doubt he’ll win a spot though. But, stranger things have happened.

Technically, you are correct. But there IS a tight end, Derek Smith. It appears he’s only been on the practice squad of three different teams, none since 2004. So, never active in an NFL game. The tight end is from Kentucky, the linebacker from Arizona State.

"But don’t discount familarity with GW and his system to help his chances of edging out Brooks."
I’m gonna go ahead and discount it, being that he never played under Williams.
Smith was a Redskin from 1997-2000.
Williams coached in Washington from 2004-2007.
I was thinking Tennessee when I posted earlier. Sorry about that.
Marcus Washington HAS played under Williams in Washington, though. The entire time he was there, in fact. He’s also three years younger than Smith (five younger than Brooks) and considerably more successful statistically than Smith.
It should be pointed out that Smith has BOTH played MLB in a 3-4 AND ILB in a 4-3, so that versatility in different packages is probably something they’re taking into account. Brooks and Washington are both strictly OLBs. So, it doesn’t seem as if Brooks and Smith are in direct competition with one another for a roster spot. They may be looking to sign both.

he won't be cheap
rotoworld.com:
In addition to the Saints, the Raiders have reportedly shown interest in free agent OLB Derrick Brooks.
Adding Brooks might enable Thomas Howard to move to the strong side, which has long been a weak spot in Oakland. The Raiders can give Brooks a better chance to start than the Saints — something he surely wants to do

Yeah, but...
it’s the Raiders. Al Davis’s Raiders. Has anyone heard Warren Sapp go off on the Raiders organization? I have and he didn’t hold much back. He says it’s a decision he wishes he had not made. I’m sure Warren has either already or will soon contact Derrick to warn him about going there. He would be better off coming to the Saints (if they want him after the workout) for two simple reason: 1) much better chance at a championship than the Raiders. 2) he’ll get to play the Bucs not once but twice. After the way they let him go, he may want a shot or two to make them regret it.

He still keeps in touch with them.

Still in touch with them?
I bet he’s not in touch with the front office, which is who cut him. Players? Maybe. I bet he would love to sack a QB to prove that they screwed up.

Agreed B & E
Brooks may be presenting a friendly face towards the Buc fans and players, but I gotta believe he ain’t too happy with the front office. Coaches either. He may not say it publicly, but you gotta believe he wants to go against his old team. Brett Favre denied that as a come-back motivation too, then the truth came out. When big-egoed players don’t get the respect they think they deserve when a team cuts them loose, they start dreaming of taking on that team and making them regret it.

Right
And Brooks will enter the HOF as a Buc no matter who he signs with.
And from Jeff Duncan Twitter about 1/2 hour ago
An addendum to earlier posts about D. Brooks. He’s in town tonight, will work out tomorrow. I predict he signs & is at practice tomorrow.
That sounds encouraging to those of us that think he still has gas in the tank.

indeed
I think he probably has a grudge against the Bucs organization but not the players or fans. I mean, I have a bit of a grudge against the Saints for cutting Deuce and Brooks has been around a lot longer and has only played for the Bucs. He’s gotta feel like he got crapped on. Might be the new coach wanting new players and not ones with authority with the other players, sorta like the rumors with Payton/Deuce.
Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

Players aren’t enshrined in the HOF as a member of a particular NFL team. The bronze busts are helmetless. Every team a player played for is listed. There’s mention of what team they spent the majority of their career with, but only on the PFHOF website (not at the Hall itself) and that’s just an FYI thing. Players do often times elect to have former coaches or teammates as their presenters, which leads to the impression that they’re being inducted as a member of that specific team, but that’s not truly the case.

But as a backup?!??
If Brooks has anything left in ol’ tank, he should be better than Shanle!

hmmm
Been a while since i’ve posted…eek preseason games incoming. i’m pumped but anyway. Didn’t the bucs only play Brooks on first and second down the last 2 or so years? I dunno that i ever had much of an issue with Shanle on running downs, it was more an issue with how lost he looked in pass coverage. Is Brooks gonna be any better? I’m not saying we shouldn’t get him, because im sure he can contribute. I’m not sure he’s gonna take Shanle’s job though. I still think these 2 new tight ends our buddies in the nfc south have acquired are gonna be huge pains in our…rear ends i guess lol.

Yep. Limited participation the last two years. Hasn’t recorded a sack since the 2005 season — which is not something he was ever really known for to begin with — though he’s made a considerable number of tackles and been in on a few big plays here and there since. Despite that, he hasn’t missed a start since his rookie season. So, at least you’d be getting a guy that has played hurt in the past. Whatever that’s worth today.
