NO.57 & Derrick Brooks
With all Due respect Derrick Brooks is an older player who over the years goal was stopping the Saints Vs Ricky Jackson who for just as many years job was to advance the New Orleans Saints & He was by far a rare type of player who spent his entire years with a team that struggled, Had Ricky Jackson ended up with the Giants & L.T came to New Orleans he would have received the same or even more recognition However he stayed here & His Number should have been retired, Now I’m not saying that Derrick Brooks will not contribute to the team but at His Age he would would not even come close to Mr.Jackson & remember had Coach Mora not suggested that he was released B/C He was looking for a younger player Ricky Jackson would have most likely retired from the Saints & Never went to the Niners for the only shot at a superbowl which they won that year while the saints failed to compete
I don't know
I have a hard time believing this warrior “cried like a baby” when told of his release. I also think, if it’s got even a shred of truth to it, it should not be public. There’s a difference in getting a tear or two in your eye and “crying like a baby.” Unless we have footage of it, I would leave that alone.
If Brooks would accept a backup role, that would be ideal. That way, when the linebackers would be evaluated every week, Brooks could always move in if it appeared he could do a better job. Certainly his knowledge of the players and their tendencies in Tampa (as well as Carolina and Atlanta- and NO for that matter) could make him very valuable. And if all was well with our 3 LBs, Brooks would make a cool million and be on a contender and play sparingly. Most likely, though, regardless of his status August- Sept 13, he would start some games, many games, maybe almost all games, depending how well our defense showed early on.
I also think he has enough skillset left, especially as he will be playing with a defense where he doesn’t have to be the best defender on the field, that should make him a good fit. All he has to do is play at an above average level with a minimum of mistakes, he doesn’t have to carry this defense. I think he represents a rare opportunity- A formidable competitor that many of the Saints have gone against and respect very much ( and probably even like him) even though he played for one of their most disliked opponents. I think the chemistry of all that could help. Remember, whoever replaces Shanle or whoever (it would have to be Shanle he is replacing I would think) and causes a young linebacker to be released, it would be better if it’s someone like Brooks that players respect and like- as opposed to some schmuck that has skills but a questionable attitude but is unlikely to gel with a motivated and contending team.
