Breaking News: Saints Re-Sign K John Carney
No story up yet, just a breaking news headline on wwltv.com. I still can't figure the deal with the musical kickers. Maybe one day they will finally come across a kicker they can settle on. I think I have enough words now!
The New Orleans Saints have signed kicker John Carney to a one-year deal. He is in New Orleans and expected to be at practice tomorrow. Carney kicked for the Saints from 2001-2006.

Good job BR!!
Nice work.
Hard to believe, Carney‘s got 21 years in. He’s old enough to be some of yo’s daddy.

OH GAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
Hartley, 23, was a perfect 13-for-13 with the Saints last year after signing in midseason, but he had been struggling during training camp. Part of the issue, according to Payton, has been the adjustment with the new snap-hold-kick combination of new long snapper Jason Kyle and new holders Mark Brunell and Joey Harrington.
Who used to hold? The punter? GAAAA!!!

yeah Pakulack was holding last year, I just looked at the Falcons game tape
So you draft a punter, well you can’t let the old punter hold because you might cut him and then you’re starting all over again right before the season starts. And hey that new long snapper is ….. different. Good God just make Joey do the holding, he needs to earn his money. Don’t make the old man Brunell get out their and kneel down, he’s creaky.

I'm surprised
This reacquisition of Carney is about a year too late. I think Hartley will ultimately keep the job. Giving him some competition and maybe even some mentoring from Carney will be a good thing. Could Payton once again roll with 2 kickers during the season? I seriously doubt he plans to do that. As long as Hartley doesn’t start missing kicks, he’ll keep the job. That one miss last night was due to a bad hold and snap, according to one report I saw. Hartley nailed the 54 yarder with about 7 yards to spare. Carney can’t come close to making those anymore.
Payton may also be upset about the kickoffs. I don’t remember seeing Hartley get one past the 5 yard line. We all know that this is unacceptable to Payton. He wants it in the endzone every time. That was one of the main reasons he dumped Carney for Mare in 2007. What a disaster that was!
Not surprised the snap/hold routine isn’t quite right. I hope they get this worked out. Harrington is a better holder than Brunell, but I don’t think they’ll be able to dress a 3rd QB every game. Some games may require an extra person at some other position. Brunell HAS to get this down. Either that or Morstead will have to hold. Does Brees not have holding experience? It seems pretty clear that they don’t expect to keep Pakaluk.
Here’s a thought: Ya think Hartley was involved in a team film studio investment debacle and they’re about to let him go? Nahhhh
Hartley will ultimately keep the job.

I think
his last kick-off came down at the 1, following the long FG, but I am pretty sure the rest all came down around the 10 or between the 5 and the 10. I don’t think the miss was his fault. It was just the first pre season game, I am confident they will work out all their chemistry with the new snapper/holder before the regular season starts.

“Harrington is a better holder than Brunell, but I don’t think they’ll be able to dress a 3rd QB every game. Some games may require an extra person at some other position. Brunell HAS to get this down.”
I’m pretty sure Harrington will come in second at QB next week, so it may work itself out. Between he and Brunell, I didn’t see anything clear cut that says “Brunell IS the backup QB”. Even the TD pass to Meachem was a little underthrown.

Don't quite agree
I think Payton is more comfortable with Brunell and, because of that, Brunell currently has a slight edge. That may change, but I can’t see it happening next week.

Agreed.
And just because he was a perfect 13-13 attempts last year doesn’t guarantee him a job, anybody remember the kid from Florida a few years ago who converted all his attempts, and still got cut at the end of the year and never got back into the NFL?

They should have had
a second kicker in training camp all along. No competition is never a good thing at any position and I suspect that’s all this is. Something to keep Hartley on his toes until final cuts.

Why is this first we're hearing of this?
From the above posted Times-Pic article:
Hartley was a perfect 13-for-13 with the Saints last year after signing in midseason, but he had been struggling during training camp. Then he missed a 20-yard field goal in the first quarter of Friday night’s preseason victory over the Cincinnati Bengals before bouncing back with a made 54-yard attempt in the second half.
I haven’t seen a single report saying Hartley has struggled during camp. Every report I saw said he was hitting all but a few or so. What is Mike Triplett typing about here? I want to see some numbers to back this statement up. How many has he missed in camp? I’m all for Carney returning to give the kid some camp competition, but I hope this isn’t a matter of Pay-Loo trying to fix a past mistake.

Question
Can anyone think of any head coach whose downfall was brought about by his inability to manage the needs of his special teams?
We have been absolutely floundering on special teams ever since 2007. Payton is entering his fourth year as head coach, and he’s had five kickers (Carney, Mare, Gramatica, Mehlhaff, and Hartley) and four punters (Weatherford, Graham, Pakulak and Morstead). Has this ever happened before in the NFL?

If this is true....
than he must have tested positive for something. Was he puffing the magic dragon during the offseason? That would be incredibly stupid if so, considering the league’s policy of making everyone pee into a cup so often.
Well, if this is true, no need to start worrying yet. As long as Drew, Vilma, Evans, or half our new secondary doesn’t get suspended, we’re alright. So far, we’ve only lost a LB we didn’t have last year, a LB coming out of retirement, 2 DE’s for four games we already knew about, and now it looks like we’ll lose our kicker for 4 games. It sucks, but no need to panic.

Mike Triplett
I don’t think he’s accurate about Hartley struggling. If he had been, they all would have reported it by now. After the one short miss last night and the sudden signing of Carney, I think Mike has just got it into his head that Hartley is having a bad camp, even though he hasn’t actually witnessed him missing many kicks. The suspension is the real reason they’re bringing in Carney, not because Hartley has “struggled.” Triplett either needs to move on from this reasoning or show us some numbers that prove he has struggled. Where’s Jeff Duncan and Brian Alee-Walsh?

According to wwl's Saints blog
Hartley’s numbers were:
Day one:
PK Garrett Hartley was 4-for-6, making a 33-yarder, two 38-yarders and one from 42 yards.
Day two:
The kicking game took center stage right after the fights. PK Garrett Hartley went 6-for-6 today after going 4-for-6 on Friday.
His makes on Saturday were two apiece from 33, 38 and 42.
Day three:
PK Garrett Hartley continued his indoor kicking on Sunday, going 4-for-5 from various lengths.
He hit two from 33, one from 38 and one from 42. He missed his final kick from 42 yards.
Day four:
K Garrett Hartley went 6-for-6 on Monday.
He hit two each from 33 and 38, one from 48 and nailed one from 50.
Day 6:
(There was no report on day 5, however this report states he went 5 for 5 on day 5)
PK Garrett Hartley, who was 6-of-6 and 5-of-5 the past two days, had an off day.
He went 5-of-8, missing from 38 (wide right), 50 (wide right) and 55 (wide left). His makes were three from 38 and one each from 50 and 55.
Day 7:
K Garrett Hartley had another less-than-perfect day, going 4-for-6.
He went 3-for-3 on the first go-around, hitting from 38, 48 and 50.
Then, with a different holder, he was wide right on the 38-yarder, hit the 48-yarder and missed the 59-yarder wide right.
Day 8:
K Garrett Hartley went through kicks again on Friday.
The result? He went 5-for-6, missing a 50-yarder.
His makes were from 38, 48, 38, 48 and 50.
Black & Gold Scrimmage
Kicker Garrett Hartley was 8-for-8 in kicking drills.
Day 12:
K Garrett Hartley was solid again on Monday, hitting all six field goals. This comes after going perfect during Saturday’s scrimmage.
Hartley made from 33, 38, 40, 42, 45 and 52.
Day 14: FInal practice before Bengals game
The Kicking Game
After hitting 17 straight kicks, K Garrett Hartley missed one on Wednesday, going 3-of-4.
He hit from 33, 36 and 38 before missing from 40.
These were spread out throughout all the daily report links in the blog, the link to the blog is
http://www.beloblog.com//WWLTV_Blogs/eyeonthesaints/
He missed a few in practice, nothing i would consider “struggling” though.

I’m not as worried about Carney kicking for four games as I am about losing a player on the active roster to hang on to Hartley. There’s no “reserve-suspension” list, right? I mean, this DOES affect the roster numbers(?)

1st four weeks
If we can just get through these first four without losing anyone else for an extended period, maybe we’ll have a good season. At least we don’t face the more “elite” teams on our schedule or divisional opponents during this stretch. I don’t think Hartley, while suspended, will count towards the active roster. I saw somewhere that Smith and Grant won’t while they’re out. I’m not ready to panic or assume the sky is falling at this point. The biggest problem during this 4 game stretch will be the reduced kicking range Carney will be capable of. Forget about him producing touchbacks on kickoffs or being able to hit a FG of more than 45 yards. The offense will need to get the ball closer to the endzone for him than they would for Hartley. At least Carney has proven himself to be as accurate as anyone out there when you get the attempt within his range.

Hartley
doesn’t put kickoffs into the end zone with any consistency, either. Not many kickers do. Pretty sure Mare, Suisham and Janikowski are the three most noted for that ability.

True, but...
he can get it a lot farther than Carney. With time, his touchback consistency will probably improve. Carney’s never going to get it back there unless he’s got a hurricane blowing at his back. very strong wind gust blowing at his back. I don’t like mentioning the “H” word at this time of the year. I hope that’s not another unexpected problem the Saints will have to deal with. Please, Mother Nature, give us a year off.

I don’t know about that. Carney seems to kickoff just as far. I definitely think Hartley has the stronger leg of the two, but it’s not all about leg strength. It’s also trajectory, i.e., lack of arch. Maybe Carney just knows how to hit it. Or rather, Hartley doesn’t, being that neither of them are reaching the magic (touchback) stripe. Maybe if Hartley spends a few weeks with Carney, he’ll pick up on whatever he’s doing wrong, as a much stronger leg SHOULD = a much farther kickoff, all things equal otherwise. Only thing that sucks is, he won’t have those four weeks of the regular season to practice with Carney, so whatever he learns from Obi Wan will have to happen prior to the Detroit game. I guess they could always retain Carney as a non-playing mentor after the fact, at least until another team needs his services.

Just saw this analysis posted there:
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Saints PK Garrett Hartley will be suspended four games to start the 2009 season.
No reason is given, but it’s possible the issue has contributed to Hartley’s struggles in training camp. Kicking is obviously very mental. It also explains the signing of John Carney. If Carney kicks well in the first four weeks, however, the Saints may just cut ties with Hartley after he comes off the suspended list. Hartley was 13-of-13 on field goals in eight games last year.
I love how they try to get into Hartley’s head. I think they’re way off about the Saints possibly cutting ties with him. Payton wants a kicker with range and accuracy. Hartley has proven himself to have that. Carney only has the accuracy. Payton will stick with the guy with the bigger leg once the suspension is served, unless Hartley suddenly becomes a basket case.
I still think it’s unfair for anyone to report that Hartley has struggled. See what you’ve done, Mike Triplett?
