Oh my
Payton has to have Whitesnake playing in his head-Here I Go Again !

Tough call
seems like dumb luck will make Payton’s choice either genius or boneheaded, but the choice will have to be made now, and the circumstances won’t develop until it’s too late to fix, or perfect prognostication(one kicker misses critical kicks, or the “other” kicker saves the day when one chokes / injuries make that last roster spot too valuable for a second kicker, or kick-by-committee gets us through the nail biters and into the playoffs).

Kickoff specialist
Why has everyone forgotten Thomas Morstead? If Carney can’t get the ball far enough downfield anymore, Morstead should be given a shot at it…and soon, since he’d need to be doing it at the beginning of the season. And if it works out okay, that’s one question taken care of.
Morstead also might be able to take over the long field goal kicks…a strategy Payton tried to use with Billy Cundiff, and failed. But since Morstead isn’t Cundiff, there’s no reason why it can’t work this time. At least it’s worth a try, seeing as how preseason games don’t count.

Since the team just now decided Morstead earned the punting job, it seems quite a stretch to imagine he could take on that set of indirectly related jobs in the next three weeks. Might be something to consider next season, by I really hope Payton doesn’t do any more dramatic experimenting with the kicking game this year. Just stick with the steadiest option available now, and get ready to take your licks when they come.

Kickoff specialist?
What happened to the days when players could do more than one thing? Can Morstead even kickoff ? Some punters today haven’t kicked the ball off the ground for so long that they can’t any more. At least not without hurting themselfs. Ah nostalgia.

He's obviously referring
to Russell Erxleben, the quinessential multitasker.

But I heard if you said his name backwards,
he’d be banished to another dimension.

Not unlike white clothing
Mr. Myxlplyx references aren’t typically condoned until AFTER Labor Day. We’re within two weeks, so I’m going to let that one slide. Consider this your written warning.

Can he kick off!?
He kicked field goals in college. He was pretty good too…not NFL caliber, maybe, but good enough for a backup option. So I don’t see how there could be any problem in trying him as a kickoff specialist, which holds strength as a premium over accuracy.

that's what i was thinking
and what i actually do in madden 10. he boots the crap out of the ball. i get a touchback about 70% of the time. i think the computer gets tired of kneeling every kickoff.
Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

And he could be a threat on the ole "drop-kick" extra point play
"I like our back end." -- Mickey Loomis, to Solomon Wilcots and Tim Brando during a press box interview in the 4th Quarter of the Saints-Bengals preseason game.

That I’d really like to so. So what if it’s “old school”. It’s still points ain’t it?
by FriarBob on Aug 28, 2009 8:08 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
OK technically “point” singular… but still…

The changed shape of the ball is the primary reason they got away from it, being that it was (and still is) extremely difficult to control the direction of the bounce. I would imagine it’s even MORE difficult now, considering the various playing surfaces you’re dealing with. Back then it was pretty much grass … or patches of dirt where grass once grew. Outside of its novelty, it’s nothing I’d want to see being attempted in a regular season game. At least, not by anyone on the Saints.

I thought all you had to do was drop it. You have to bounce it first?
by FriarBob on Aug 28, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes. It has to strike the ground. The kick is typically on the rebound, a spit second later.

How good is Hamilton's leg?
As long we’re talking crazy…………We could save a roster spot and gain a RB.

We could always
sign Derrick Brooks to placekick.
After all, he’s a FUTURE HALL OF FAMER.
