"In order, it's be (Marques) Colston, probably (Robert) Meachem second, and then Devery (Henderson) third, that would be the top three,"
Hokie Gajan
WWL
Have we already forgotten about Lance Moore? I know he hasn't been out there this week but I think the guy earned enough respect last year to be included in the mix! What gives, Hokie?

Hokie appears to have answered that question
“Lance Moore is getting a lot of good work, but I mean, he’s not doing the full scale practice in team (drills) and everything else,” Hokie said. “I know he would be up there, but it’s just based on what you see in team.”

Too many productive receivers
What a wonderful problem. I’m in the “Meachem unseats Henderson, Moore owns WR3” camp, though. If Arrington ever plays, could change, but I’m not holding my breath.

Why do you say that?
He’s obviously speaking in terms of right now. Today. Who ARE the top three, not who WILL BE. If Colston was coming off surgery and not fully participating, I’m sure Gajan would have excluded him, also.

We have not lost anything, only gained.
Colston #1 of course. Moore handled the number two spot as well as you could ask for last year so I only believe he will do the same this year. I got a man crush on him; lol can’t help it the guy really shined last year. If Payton chooses to keep Moore in the slot, then I see a toss up between Meachem and Henderson at the number two. They’ll probably play Meachem more but I see Henderson definitely getting in their in that number 2 spot often as well.

Tough call on the slot
Moore probably has the best hands of any WR on the team, but Colston is close. Marques is also bigger and not as fast as the other three. As long as egos didn’t get in the way, I’d probably have to go with Meachem and Moore as the starters with Colston in the slot. He just seems like the ideal possession target, all things considered.

craziness
they may run a few plays with colston at the slot but unless he’s injured he doesn’t come off the field in place of anyone. i think you forget how good colston actually is. before the thumb injury he caught any pass that was within 15 yards of him.

No, I don’t forget at all. Although 15 yards is a tiny bit of an overstatement. His arms aren’t quite that long.
But technically while he isn’t “in the slot” when there is nobody else outside of him, he can still line up “close” and be a weapon in the middle of the field despite not technically being “in the slot” on that play.

Gah I got mixed up who was replying to who…

He doesn't have to come out
if he starts in the slot in a 3 WR formation or at the X in a 2.

Actually I think they’d rather put Colston in the slot… that’s what he kicked so much butt at in ’06 after all… and he would be even better than TGon (much less JShock) at controlling the middle of the field.

I agree
he was a TE at the Hofstra, so he’s used to that intermediate route. Moore and Meachem seem to have more potential in the long ball department. Moore working the sticks/sidelines, Meachem stretching the D. Kind of tough to beat that combination.

I think
WR1 through 3 is just a numeric formality. Somebody brought up the other day that the Saints ran 3 receiver sets like 50% of the time last year, and the ball gets spread out so much, it’s really just a matter of who touches the field more. I think Meachem will be a better Henderson than Henderson is if he gets equal touches. Moore(if healthy) and Colston should be on the field most of any of them.

Probably so
as Meachem and Henderson are the speed merchants of the bunch. You not likely to see both on the field at the same time, other than on third-and-long situations, or if someone gets hurt. On any given down, Colston and Moore are the most likely to be out there, like you said.

I think thats right.

This isn't just a 1-2-3 issue, but an X-Y-Z one
Subtle difference, but a real one. Besides the tight end, there are three receiver positions: split end, flanker, and slot receiver. Each has a different purpose. For instance, putting Colston in the slot, parked outside of Jeremy Shockey, gives a great deal more weight to a running play to the strong side (receivers do also block, you know). I think Payton wants his receivers to be able to play any position, but which position they play is going to depend upon what play is being run.
It’s a peculiarity of our system that the real speed merchant of the team (Henderson) has been thought of as the third option. How many top offenses can you think of whose star receiver wasn’t the guy on afterburners?

Also, if you have Arrington or Meachem out there also, that's a lot of speed
If Meachem or Arrington get some good long passes under their belt early on, and then we lineup Henderson and one of those guys, who do you as a defense put on the fast guy? Who is the fast guy?? It’s probably Henderson, but I think you see my point. And, I think that could happen easily because both Meachem and Arrington are tall and fast and should be able to out compete shorter cbs and FS for long balls.

I find
Marques Colston to be EXTREMELY similiar to Herman Moore in just about every aspect of his game, including physical makeup. That’s a compliment, btw. It’s hard to fathom anyone being too young to remember Moore already, but I’m sure there are a few people reading this wondering “who?”
